  • Multi-Scale Exposure Fusion via Content Adaptive Edge-Preserving Smoothing

      Abstract: Multi-scale exposure fusion (MEF) is an efficient way to fuse differently exposed low dynamic range (LDR) images of a high dynamic range (HDR) scene into an information enriched LDR image. In this paper, a new MEF algorithm is proposed to merge the differently exposed LDR images by introducing novel content adaptive edge-preserving smoothing (CAS) pyramids for the weight maps of all the LDR images. With the proposed CAS pyramids, details in the brightest and darkest regions of the HDR scene are preserved better than existing MEF algorithms on top of the Gaussian pyramids and edge-preserving smoothing pyramids. Comparisons experimentally demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm to nine state-of-the-art MEF algorithms from both subjective and objective points of view regardless the image sizes.

  • P3FA: Unified Unicast/Multicast Forwarding Algorithm for
           High-Performance Router/Switch

      Abstract: High-performance multicast packet switching technologies are evolving to meet the growing demand for scalability on the Internet and datacenters, etc. Implementing a high-performance switch/router relies on a polynomial-time group membership query algorithm within the Packet Forwarding Engines (PFEs) to determine whether a packet is forwarded through an egress. Among these, Bloom filter (BF)-based and Residue Number System (RNS)-based are being considered as two representatives of the membership query algorithms. However, both approaches suffer from some fatal weaknesses such as false-positive probability and time inefficiencies, especially for a carrier-grade PFE with high port-density features. According to similar properties of the RNS, we propose a simplified forwarding algorithm in this paper, named Per-Port Prime Filter Array (P3FA). The simulation results indicate that the P3FA can significantly improve space efficiencies under specific lower egress-diversities conditions. Under the same space constraints, P3FA improves multicast and unicast time efficiency by 1 to 4 orders of magnitude in the port-density 16–1024 range compared to previous works. Although it comes at the expense of hardware cost, it is still acceptable compared to recently improved previous work.

      Abstract: This article introduces the notion of pinning control for complex dynamical networks regarding their stabilization, synchronization and control. Specifically, it will first review the concept of network pinning control and then address the fundamental issues of network stabilizability, synchronizability and controllability. Basic ideas will be explained, technical derivations will be outlined, and important theoretical problems will be briefly discussed. It will show that the self-contained theoretical framework of pinning control technology is promising for practical applications in network science and engineering.

  • The Energy Management of Multiport Energy Router in Smart Home

      Abstract: Although smart home has received wide attention in recent years, numerous scholars focus more on energy optimization strategy than energy dispatch hardware device (named energy router). Meanwhile, this energy router should have several features, i.e., high renewable energy utilization, energy multi-port and low volume. Thus, this paper designs a nine-port energy router regarding smart home and proposes a multimode hierarchical management strategy for this energy router. First, for the multi-port demand of wind, solar, storage and utilization, this paper presents a nine-port energy router to improve the renewable energy consumption and power supply flexibility. In addition, to reduce the volume of the energy router, a non-isolated AC/DC hybrid topology is constructed through embedding the integrated power electronic converters, which achieves the miniaturization of the energy router. In order to improve the renewable energy utilization rate, the decentralized module control is proposed for the components of energy router to provide the voltage and frequency support for system, and realizes the power sharing of distributed generations (DGs). Furthermore, the power exchange control with three-mode switching is proposed to guarantee the global energy flow balance under complex conditions. Eventually, the feasibility of the energy router is verified by the simulation and experiments.

  • Deep-Learned Perceptual Quality Control for Intelligent Video
           Communication

      Abstract: With the development of video technology, a large amount of video data generated from video conferences, sports events, live broadcasts and network classes flows into our daily lives. However, ultra-high-definition video transmission is still a challenge due to the limited network bandwidth and instability, which further affects the quality of video service closely linked with consumer electronic video display. To address this challenge, we propose a deep-learned perceptual quality control approach, which can significantly improve the video quality and visual experience at the same bandwidth. The proposed scheme mainly involves saliency region extraction, perceptual-based bits allocation, and video enhancement. Firstly, we exploit a multi-scale deep convolutional network module to predict the static saliency map that semantically highlights the salient regions. Secondly, we develop a recurrent neural network model to extract the dynamic saliency regions. Finally, a three-level rate allocation scheme is developed based on the resulted saliency guidance, which is more reasonable by taking into account the visual characteristics of human eyes. Experimental results on a large dataset show that our method achieves an average gain of 1.5dB on the salient regions without introducing an extra bandwidth burden, which significantly improves the visual experience and paves the way to intelligent video communication.

  • An Adaptive-Gain Super-Twisting Position Observer for Grid-Interfaced SRM

      Abstract: This work contributes for the development of a low-cost reliable switched reluctance motor (SRM) drive for domestic water supply requirements. The work presents an adaptive gain super twisting sliding mode observer (AGST-SMO) for SRM drive with an enhanced transient behaviour. An online updation of sliding gains is proposed while satisfying the stability conditions of the observer. Performance of this observer is compared with the existing sliding mode observers. The developed SRM drive has a dedicated-port configuration to integrate the sources with SRM-pump and a domestic equipment, with reliable operation at low cost. For grid-side power quality issues, an improved linear sinusoidal tracer (ILST) is employed for the control of voltage source converter (VSC). ILST has inherent merits like active harmonics filtering, power factor correction, and fast dynamic response. The control of the drive system is validated by developing laboratory scale prototype and the system performance is examined at different conditions. The drive is suitable to fulfil water requirements for various applications at the consumer-end.

      Abstract: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) continues to have a negative impact on healthcare systems around the world, though the vaccines have been developed and national vaccination coverage rate is steadily increasing. At the current stage, automatically segmenting the lung infection area from CT images is essential for the diagnosis and treatment of COVID-19. Thanks to the development of deep learning technology, some deep learning solutions for lung infection segmentation have been proposed. However, due to the scattered distribution, complex background interference and blurred boundaries, the accuracy and completeness of the existing models are still unsatisfactory. To this end, we propose a boundary guided semantic learning network (BSNet) in this paper. On the one hand, the dual-branch semantic enhancement module that combines the top-level semantic preservation and progressive semantic integration is designed to model the complementary relationship between different high-level features, thereby promoting the generation of more complete segmentation results. On the other hand, the mirror-symmetric boundary guidance module is proposed to accurately detect the boundaries of the lesion regions in a mirror-symmetric way. Experiments on the publicly available dataset demonstrate that our BSNet outperforms the existing state-of-the-art competitors and achieves a real-time inference speed of 44 FPS.   • Design Space Exploration of Practical VVC Encoding for Emerging Media

      Abstract: Versatile Video Coding (VVC/H.266) is the latest video coding standard designed for a broad range of next-generation media applications. This paper explores the design space of practical VVC encoding by profiling the Fraunhofer Versatile Video Encoder (VVenC). All experiments were conducted over five 2160p video sequences and their downsampled versions under the random access (RA) condition. The exploration was performed by analyzing the rate-distortion-complexity (RDC) of the VVC block structure and coding tools. First, VVenC was profiled to provide a breakdown of coding block distribution and coding tool utilization in it. Then, the usefulness of each VVC coding tool was analyzed for its individual impact on overall RDC performance. Finally, our findings were elevated to practical implementation guidelines: the highest coding gains come with the multi type tree (MTT) structure, adaptive loop filter (ALF), cross component linear model (CCLM), and bi-directional optical flow (BDOF) coding tools, whereas multi transform selection (MTS) and affine motion estimation are the primary candidates for complexity reduction. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work to provide a comprehensive RDC analysis for practical VVC encoding. It can serve as a basis for practical VVC encoder implementation or optimization on various computing platforms.

      Abstract: Severe contrast degradation in an image result in a substantial loss of crucial visible information. A novel unsupervised image enhancement algorithm is proposed in this paper to unravel hidden visual details in perceptually invisible images. In this paper, new algorithms are designed to solve the range localization problem. The proposed algorithm intends to expand the image range to maximize its intensity level utilization. Outliers present in an image intensity range are truncated based on their power distribution. Based on the type of input image, maxima-minima, or frequency-based expansion of truncated levels, is exercised to avoid over-enhancement. Two novel parameters, namely the transmission map and zero-frequency spread, are coined. The visually enhanced result successfully exhibits the camouflaged information and avoids over-enhancement. Consumer gadgets, such as cameras, have difficulty taking pictures in very dark and cloudy settings. The suggested algorithm can improve low-contrast photos that are both very dark and severely attenuated. The unsupervised nature of the proposed algorithm makes it suitable for application in the field of consumer electronics like mobile phones and digital cameras. A consumer-focused, platform-independent app is created and made available to the general public for additional study.

  • GiTMO: An HDR10 Compatible Generic Tone-Mapping for Real-Time Video Play

      Abstract: Though the market of HDR displays for consumers is gaining maturity, low dynamic range (LDR) displays still hold a majority share in the consumer market. Many tone-mapping operators (TMO) have been developed to convert the HDR contents into a form suitable for LDR displays. This work proposes a generic tone-mapping operator (GiTMO) that can represent all global TMOs in a generic form of a one-dimensional array of a few coefficients. We use these coefficients and the existing HDR10 delivery pipeline to produce a tone-mapped version of the HDR content at the receiver end in real time. In our framework, coefficients are sent to the receiver as supplemental enhancement information (SEI) message of High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC). Thus, HDR10, which is designed for HDR display, becomes compatible with LDR displays too. This can relieve the content producers from the need to release separate copies of HDR and LDR content. GiTMO, being generic and efficient, can generate LDR faithfully for all global TMOs, making the consumer end oblivious of the TMO used at the transmitter side. We perform extensive evaluations to validate the accuracy and efficiency of the GiTMO and the proposed content delivery format, and their benefits over the existing approaches.
