      Abstract: Quantum phenomena are attracting increasing interest in various areas within electromagnetics. The article “Plasmonic Waveguides: Enhancing Quantum Electrodynamic Phenomena at Nanoscale,” by Ying Li and Christos Argyropoulos, continues this series on quantum technologies. While the article aims to explain plasmonic phenomena (sources near metal surfaces) at a quantum level, it also devotes significant attention to the use of the classical Green’s function in rigorous quantum theory and calculations. This provides a bridge from the familiar (classical electromagnetics) to what may be, for some readers, the unfamiliar (quantum electromagnetics) for dispersive and lossy environments.

  • Plasmonic Waveguides: Enhancing quantum electrodynamic phenomena at
           nanoscale

      Abstract: The emerging field of plasmonics may lead to enhanced light–matter interactions at extremely nanoscale regions. Plasmonic (metallic) devices promise to efficiently control classical and quantum properties of light. Plasmonic waveguides are usually employed to excite confined electromagnetic modes at nanoscale that can strongly interact with matter. Analysis shows that nanowaveguides share similarities with their low-frequency microwave counterparts. In this article, we review ways to study plasmonic nanostructures coupled to quantum optical emitters from a classical electromagnetic perspective. Quantum emitters are mainly used to generate single-photon quantum light that can be employed as a quantum bit, or “qubit,” in envisioned quantum information technologies. We demonstrate different ways to enhance a diverse range of quantum electrodynamic phenomena based on plasmonic configurations by using the Green’s function formalism, a classical dyadic tensor. More specifically, spontaneous emission and superradiance are analyzed through Green’s function-based field quantization. The exciting new field of quantum plasmonics could lead to a plethora of novel optical devices for communications and computing applications in the quantum realm, such as efficient single-photon sources, quantum sensors, and compact on-chip nanophotonic circuits.

      Abstract: We present the basic prerequisites of electromagnetism in flat space–time and provide a description of electromagnetism in terms of the Faraday tensor. We generalize electromagnetic theory to a relativistic setting, introducing the Einstein field equations to describe the propagation of electromagnetic radiation in curved space–time. We investigate the gravitational redshift and derive formulae for the combined effect of the gravitational redshift and the Doppler shift in curved space–time.

  • Radio-Frequency Electromagnetic Fields: Simultaneous exposure to infinite
           sources from typical base stations

      Abstract: This article shows that simultaneous exposure to infinite electromagnetic field (EMF) sources from typical base stations transmitting at multiple frequency bands is lower than international limits. Considering a real base station density and conservative path loss models, we show that the power density at a given location can be modeled by a convergent infinite series. To validate this model, we apply it to Brasília, Brazil, and compare the results with measurements. While the proposed model shows that the exposure ratio (ER) will not exceed 2.62%, the highest measured value reaches 85% of this estimation.

  • Finite-Difference Time-Domain Modeling of Periodic Structures: A review of
           constant wave vector techniques

      Abstract: This article reviews state-of-the-art periodic boundary conditions (PBCs) in finite difference time-domain (FDTD) simulations that operate by enforcing constant wave vector components. The mathematical principles and 3D FDTD implementation details are systematically outlined. Techniques for extracting scattering parameters, Brillouin diagrams, and attenuation constants are presented along with the array scanning method (ASM) used to model the interaction of nonperiodic sources with periodic structures. Through these techniques, the robustness, utility, and efficiency of PBCs are demonstrated and a unified view of the various approaches to the FDTD implementation of PBCs is presented.

  • A Sine-Space, Mixed-Coordinate Polarization Representation for Rotated
           Phased Arrays: Using a linear algebra calculus to transform radiated
           fields

      Abstract: The industry-standard phased-array pattern coordinate system, sine space, leads to a representation of polarized fields which can be misleading. This is especially true at the array’s boresight, where the polarization vector degenerates and becomes multivalued. This article presents a mixed-coordinate polarization representation for phased-array fields, with position components in sine space and vector components in a selectable, rotated-coordinate-system basis. The transforms required to move to this representation, ${E}_{El'}{(}{u'}{,},{v'}{)}$ and ${E}_{Az'}{(}{u'}{,},{v'}{)}$, from the fields described in a local spherical basis, ${E}_{mathit{theta}}{(}mathit{theta}{,}mathit{phi}{)}$ and ${E}_{mathit{phi}}{(}mathit{theta}{,}mathit{phi}{)}$, are given. Although the formulation focuses on phased arrays, the transforms are general to the fields generated from any source (e.g., single-antenna and phased, conformal, and distributed arrays). Several applications of the developed basis transformations are provided to demonstrate their use and validity. Circular-polarization purity degradation based on a cross-Hertzian dipole pair is considered and quantified for a dual-polarized communication link. Additionally, the impact of different measurement approaches on the observed polarization is also examined. Finally, platform rotation with respect to a static polarization frame is investigated to quantify increases in the cross-polarization coupling of an antenna array over the observation angle, which may negatively impact a linearly polarized communication link due to an incurred polarization mismatch loss.

      Abstract: A novel multifunctional exponentially tapered slot (Vivaldi) antenna exhibiting tunable frequency-notched and tunable narrow-band operation is proposed in this article. Integration of multiple varactor-coupled split-ring resonators (VC-SRRs) into the feed region of the Vivaldi yields a wideband tunable frequency-notched response upon suitable tuning of the varactor diodes. Furthermore, the VC-SRR-loaded Vivaldi, when augmented with suitably located switches connecting the slot line, yields a tunable narrow-band performance over an octave bandwidth centered around 5.25 GHz.

      Abstract: 5G multiple-input, multiple-output (MIMO) antenna systems will be an important pillar in realizing the new standard. The key advantages that MIMO provides are high data rate, low latency, and high reliable communication. The main objective of this article is to present a comprehensive review, recent trends and development of sub-6 GHz and millimeter wave (mm-wave) MIMO antenna designs for next-generation wireless communications. This work features MIMO antenna designs for both base station (BS) as well as handheld devices for 5G communications. A state-of-the-art literature review is presented to report the recent developments in sub-6 GHz 5G MIMO, integrated 4G, and mm-wave 5G MIMO, mm-wave 5G MIMO antennas, and mm-wave massive-MIMO (m-MIMO) BS antenna designs for the first time in a comprehensive manner. Moreover, the challenges associated with 5G communication are also discussed.

      Abstract: Implant sensors and robots are expected to sense biological information or images. They stay in the human body for a long time to make a diagnosis or move freely inside the body to perform remote treatment, such as excision of the affected area or drug injection. In this study, toward the aforementioned purpose, we developed a communication module with small antennas that use the 10-60-MHz band to enable high-speed implant communication to the deep part of the human body. A waveform equalization technique was also used to increase the transmission bandwidth limited by the small antennas and reduce the sizes of their implementation. As a result, an implant communication distance of 33 cm or more that can cover the entire human torso was achieved at a data rate of 20 Mb/s. Experimental results on a living swine also showed that the developed module is able to communicate deeper in the human body than all others reported in the literature at sufficiently high data rates. This article describes the development of the implant communication module and shows the current status of research by comparing its performance with others reported in the literature.

      Abstract: The effect of delay spread (DS), the specular multipath components (SMCs), and the impact of dense multipath components (DMCs) on multiple-input/multiple-output (MIMO) system performance in a tunnel environment are studied by considering a Richter’s maximum-likelihood (RiMAX)-based estimator. The path loss (PL), angular spread, interuser spatial correlation, and capacity of a massive MIMO framework are analyzed at the 3.5-GHz frequency band through a measurement campaign inside a subway tunnel to implement the latest 5G standards. The radio channel consists of a uniform rectangular array of 32 transmitting elements and a uniform cylindrical array of 64 receiving elements with horizontal and vertical polarizations. The power ratio of the DMCs is found to be distance dependent, as the DMCs and SMCs behave differently in tunnels. Moreover, the study shows that the channel capacity, angular spread, and DS are reduced as the distance between the transmitting and receiving antenna arrays increases, whereas the PL exponent increases with the distance. This research highlights the importance of considering spatial characteristics in 5G massive MIMO system models and provides guidelines to enhance the networks’ accuracy in underground mobile communications.

      Abstract: The 2021 IEEE Conference on Antennas Measurements and Applications (CAMA) was held virtually on 15–17 November 2021. Women’s research was particularly visible through the three invited talks and a special session. Today, our societies are concerned by the imbalance between men and women who pursue a career in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) and try to encourage women to study in these fields. This is the main reason why many institutions, such as IEEE, take actions to stress the role of women researchers. One of them is the organization of special sessions dedicated to research conducted and led by women. According to my experience and discussions I have had with colleagues, these initiatives raise questions and have supporters and opponents, even among women researchers.

      Abstract: The engagement of young researchers in the process of scholarly publishing is essential to their career development as well as to advancing science. It signals active involvement with the discourse in a field and contribution to the body of knowledge. Writing and reviewing scientific articles can facilitate a deep understanding of the scientific process and the nuances of effective experimental design as well as the acquirement of appropriate scientific communication skills; notably, these skills are central to the competitiveness and success of young professionals (YPs) in today’s and tomorrow’s workplace, be it in academia or industry. A number of research studies have explored the benefits of engaging young researchers in scientific publishing. As highlighted in some of these studies, despite the importance of the early exposure of graduate students and young researchers to scientific writing and peer review, relevant activities are often not prioritized within the framework of educational programs, thus leading to the limited development of key skills—critical to the success of YPs across different fields—such as communicating research to a general audience, structuring ideas through effective scientific writing, and identifying the strengths and weaknesses of experimental design [1]. Thus, it is of paramount importance that YPs are aware of the benefits of becoming actively involved in the publication process, both as authors and reviewers, and are also provided—and pursue themselves—relevant opportunities toward augmenting their technical and communication skills, which can prove valuable in their current and future careers. The IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society (AP-S) offers a range of journals, covering the entire spectrum of the antennas and propagation field, that represent excellent oppo-tunities for YPs to advance their career through publishing and reviewing [2]–[7].
