      Abstract: Everyone with just a bit of a green thumb will tell you that water can do miracles for a well-maintained lawn. Sometimes, however, water can also do great things for antennas. Please check out the article by Kong et al. focusing on a frequency-selective structure that can be controlled using water channels. The article starts with an introduction that reviews the concept of frequency-selective surfaces. Then it turns to the new design concept, providing both analytic and numerical evidence in support of the new idea. Finally, the contribution is enriched with experimental results confirming the performance of the technology, showing its practical interest. This issue of IEEE Antennas and Propagation Magazine also features many other interesting articles. Surender et al. presents a nice review of rectennas for applications in wireless technologies. The work starts with a rich bibliographic analysis. It then reviews the primary elements of a rectenna system, examining the main solutions available in literature. Finally, attention is turned to applications, with a detailed list of relevant scenarios analyzed in large detail. The article by Notarosˇ is an excellent review of polarimetric weather radars. The article starts by illustrating the principles of radar polarimetry, then it proceeds with technical analyses of specific devices, and finally the contribution turns to applications, showing the data richness that can be provided by polarimetry and its applicability to weather analysis and forecasts. Finally, the article by Loghmannia and Manteghi presents a broadband strategy for small-antenna matching by an amplifier. After a bibliographic review and a section summarizing the relevant background material, the article reviews the principles of broadband parametric matching and presents an antenna design enriched with validating simulations. Finally, a prototype with experimental validations is presented showing achievable-performance of the technology.

  • Light Interaction With an Ensemble of Quantum Dots [Guest Editorial]

      Abstract: The quantum technologies series of articles started with the basics of quantum electromagnetics and then turned to deal with various promising applications. These range from the computation of the Casimir force to the analysis of interactions between electromagnetic waves and large molecules behaving as nanoantennas. Another article outlined the advantages of more futuristic higher level applications, such as quantum radars and lidars. Recent articles in the series covered device-level performance, including the quantum electrodynamics of plasmonic waveguides and construction of transmon qubits. Similarly, the present contribution, “Numerical Simulations of Laser Pulse Propagation in Quantum Active Media,” deals with the semiclassical analysis of field interaction with a collection of quantum dots, posing a heavy computational challenge. One typically sidesteps this by deriving a homogeneous behavior. But this leaves out interesting design opportunities. This article takes a different approach to the self-consistent analysis of a large ensemble of quantum dots. It combines analysis methods that are well known in the electromagnetics community together with predictor–corrector methods to solve for the evolution of the polarization of quantum dots. Interestingly, the approach correctly predicts experimentally observed behavior.

  • Numerical Simulations of Laser Pulse Propagation in Quantum Active Media:
           Using a semiclassical model

      Abstract: Active media are materials that consist of quantum systems, such as atoms, impurities, or quantum dots, and are characterized by strong resonant absorption and re-emission of radiation. In this article, we present a general framework for the numerical simulation and analysis of time-dependent radiation-induced phenomena in active media. The formulation used is based on the solution of semiclassical Maxwell–Bloch equations describing the evolution of each quantum element under the effect of external and re-emitted radiation. Within these Maxwell–Bloch equations, the coupling of quantum systems to classical Maxwellian fields poses computational challenges due to the strong nonlinearities involved. In contrast to traditional mesh-based solvers, we adopt an electric field integral-operator approach that can reliably account for near-field effects—including self-radiation—and is scalable to large systems. We then focus on media based on large numbers of quantum dots and demonstrate various physical effects arising from the near-field coupling, including polarization modulations and superradiance.

  • Rectenna Design and Development Strategies for Wireless Applications: A

      Abstract: In this article, a comprehensive review specifically on the applications of rectennas for different wireless systems has been presented. Rectenna systems are used to convert radio-frequency (RF) energy into dc signals. Attracting ever-increasing interest among researchers, the rectenna has occupied a unique position in RF and microwave engineering systems. During the last four decades, the research on rectenna design has been focused on improving the power conversion efficiency (PCE) and compatibility while reducing the design complexity as well. This review article summarizes the overall rectenna research carried out for different applications, viz., wireless power transmission (WPT), wireless sensor networks (WSNs), solar power transmission (SPT), medical implants, and wireless energy-harvesting (WEH) systems. Such a review article has rarely been proposed in the open literature to the best of the authors’ knowledge. The main objectives of the article are to 1) accommodate the key design requirements of the rectenna, 2) study the potential application of rectennas and their possible configurations to achieve desired performance characteristics, and 3) to present a comparative analysis of the performance parameters of the different reported works.

  • A Great Wall-Inspired, Water-Based, Switchable Frequency-Selective
           Rasorber With Polarization Selectivity: Multifunctional, polarization
           selective, independent working states

      Abstract: A water-based, switchable frequency-selective rasorber (FSR) with polarization selectivity using Great Wall structures is presented in this article. The proposed structure includes a container comprising horizontal and vertical channels enabling a dividable injection of water and a cross-gap frequency-selective surface (FSS). The novelty of the design lies in its switchability among three different operating states by injecting water into different water channels. When the horizontal channel is filled with water and there is no water in the vertical channel, this structure can be used as an FSR with single-polarization selectivity. The FSR with a −10-dB absorption band from 6.8 to 18.8 GHz allows only certain polarized electromagnetic (EM) waves to pass at 3.1 GHz with an insertion loss of −0.78 dB, while another polarized EM wave cannot pass. When the two channels are filled with water, the structure acts as an absorber in high frequency in which any polarized EM wave cannot be transmitted. Furthermore, the original transmission frequency band in low frequency is switched to the reflection frequency band. Besides, a reconfigurable, water-based FSR automatic control system is built to achieve state switching and temperature constancy of the water within the container. Ultimately, a prototype of the presented design is fabricated, simulated, and measured to verify feasibility. This work can be combined with an antenna to achieve out-of-band backward radar cross-section reduction.

  • Polarimetric Weather Radar: Overview of principles and applications

      Abstract: We introduce radar polarimetry, which generally is a less widely known concept of radar engineering, and explain the principles and applications of polarimetric Doppler weather radars. For example, a polarimetric radar can distinguish among precipitation particles of different shapes, compositions, and orientations. A relatively simple electromagnetic idea resulted in the 2012 upgrade of the National Weather Service (NWS) network of 160 high-resolution Doppler weather radars in the United States, with dual-polarization technology. We describe the details of the Colorado State University (CSU)–CHILL research radar, featuring exceptional polarization purity and dual-frequency operation, and its setup and role in winter field experiments in Colorado.

      Abstract: In this work, a parametric up-converter amplifier is introduced as a wideband impedance-matching network. Chu’s limit restricts the minimum Q-factor of unloaded small antennas. However, the practical bandwidth (BW) of small antennas is defined by their loaded Q-factor. By connecting a small antenna to an amplifier with a real input impedance that is several times greater than the radiation resistance of the antenna, we propose increasing the return loss, which leads to a reduction in the loaded Q-factor and an increase in the BW. In addition, a parametric amplifier is used because, in comparison with transistor amplifiers, it offers low-noise characteristics. The gain of the low-noise parametric amplifier compensates for the loss due to the imposed mismatch. Our simulation result shows BW improvements up to 32 times can be accomplished by trading 2 dB of noise figure (NF), compared to the 15 dB suggested by Chu’s limit for a lossy antenna.

      Abstract: The remarkable spreading of medical devices relying on electromagnetic (EM) fields stimulates a deeper analysis of their interactions with the human body. The electric field generated by a radio-frequency (RF) source, such as an antenna, can be transmitted inside biological tissues and used in disease treatment, rehabilitation, and noninvasive imaging. In this context, it is important to facilitate the penetration of the electric field inside tissues. Matching layers (MLs) consisting of dielectric media or impedance surfaces provide an approach to maximize the field penetration. However, the presence of a source in close proximity to the body complicates the EM analysis and the design of such a structure. Here, we analyze an analytical method based on the wave-transmission-chain matrix and the wave-impedance concept, as defined by Schelkunoff for near-field sources. Examples of the usefulness of this approach in designing an ML that could improve the penetration of the electric field inside tissues are presented. The results obtained analytically are finally compared with those of a full-wave solver, showing good agreement.

      Abstract: Recent wireless communication systems, including the 5G communication New Radio (NR) operating in the millimeter-wave (mm-wave) bands, demand performance measurements using an over-the-air (OTA) test instead of using the traditional conducted methods. This article provides an overview of various OTA measurement systems that measure the integrated antenna inside a 5G-and-beyond mm-wave device, including the direct far-field (DFF), indirect FF (IFF), near-field (NF), and midfield measurements. By considering several significant parameters, including minimum measurement distance required, metrics that can be measured, and complexity of the electrical and mechanical components of the system, suitable OTA measurement methods for integrated antennas can be selected. Furthermore, factors contributing to the measurement uncertainty of OTA systems based on the technical report (TR) of the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) are summarized and discussed. By analyzing the significant parameters of each OTA system and contributors of the measurement uncertainty, the reader can determine the OTA method that is most suitable to measure the integrated antennas for mm-wave communications.

Of the seven women chosen here, most were subject to major discrimination, even at universities or in the workplace, due to either being married or just being women. In many cases, their talent was recognized early, and they were put on the right path to achieve what they did. My intention is to concentrate on women in radio and electrical science who were first to achieve something that was productive or led to research so that they made it easier for other women who followed. Seven remarkable women are identified whose work had lasting impact.

      Abstract: The evolution towards a fully connected intelligent digital world as envisioned in the Internet of Everything paradigm, connecting not only people but also computing resources, autonomous vehicles, smart devices, wearables, and even (humanoid) robots, is imposing increasingly stringent requirements on wireless systems. The exploitation of millimeter-wave frequencies and adoption of (massive) multiple-input, multiple-output (MIMO) techniques are key to keep pace with the ever-increasing demands for higher data rates by these next-generation applications. While current (massive) MIMO implementations typically rely on time-division duplexing to ease channel estimation and precoding, they also provide a natural pathway to further upgrade these networks with in-band full-duplex (IBFD) operation, enabling concurrent transmission and reception within the same frequency band, thereby further boosting wireless data rates while dealing efficiently with scarce, and costly, spectral resources. Moreover, an important emerging research area consists of leveraging IBFD to provide novel multifunction capabilities, such as the combination of radar and communication functionality in one system. This is becoming highly relevant following the steep rise in interest in self-driving cars, unmanned aerial vehicles, and cyberphysical systems, all of which need to simultaneously communicate and sense their environment. Hence, the ability of IBFD technology to realize wireless systems that share spectral and hardware resources to simultaneously support multiple functions makes it the technology of the future and will enable it to be adopted into both existing and future-generation networks, paving the way for innovative applications that have not yet been conceived.

      Abstract: Dr. Oleg Alexandrovich Tretyakov, 83, passed away on Tuesday, 25 January 2022, in Istanbul, Turkey, after a short battle with lung cancer. He was an outstanding expert in electrodynamics and radiophysics. He was the chair of Commission B of the International Union of Radio Science (URSI) Committee of Ukraine since 1993, a Member of IEEE, and a professor emeritus of the Department of Theoretical Radiophysics, V.N. Karazin Kharkiv National University (KhNU), Ukraine. He had experience in solving diffraction problems by mathematically rigorous methods, wave scattering from rough surfaces, and wave propagation in random media, linear and nonlinear phenomena, and dynamic chaos in microwave oscillators and amplifiers. With him, we lost an internationally well-known and highly regarded leading figure in electromagnetic theory. His intellect, integrity, humor, professionalism, and humanity will be greatly missed.
