  • A Comparative Study of PSO, GWO, and HOA Algorithms for Maximum Power
           Point Tracking in Partially Shaded Photovoltaic Systems

    • Abstract: Solar energy harnessed through photovoltaic technology plays a crucial role in generating electrical energy. Maximising the power output of solar modules requires optimal solar radiation. However, challenges arise due to obstacles such as stationary objects, buildings, and sand-laden winds, resulting in multiple points of maximum power on the P–V curve. This problem requires the use of maximum power point tracking algorithms, especially in unstable climatic conditions and partial shading scenarios. In this study, we propose a comparative analysis of three MPPT methods: particle swarm optimisation (PSO), grey wolf optimisation (GWO) and Horse Herd Optimization Algorithm (HOA) under dynamic partial shading conditions. We evaluate the accuracy of these methods using Matlab / Simulink simulations. The results show that all three methods solve partial shading problems effectively and with high precision. Furthermore, the Horse Herd Optimization approach has superior tracking accuracy and faster convergence compared with the other proposed methods.

  • Novel Speed Sensorless DTC Design for a Five-Phase Induction Motor with an
           Intelligent Fractional Order Controller Based-MRAS Estimator

    • Abstract: This paper presents a fractional-order adaptive mechanism-based model reference adaptive system (MRAS) configuration for speed estimation of sensorless direct torque control (DTC) of a five-phase induction motor. In effect, the fractional-order proportional-integral (FOPI) controller parameters are obtained by the particle swarm optimisation (PSO) algorithm to enhance the MRAS observer response. Thus, the developed algorithm in the speed loop control of the DTC strategy to increase its robustness against disturbances. Moreover, a comparative study has been done of the proposed MRAS-PSO/FOPI speed estimator with the conventional MRAS-proportional-integral (PI) and the PSO-based MRAS-PI. Simulation results have carried out of the different controllers used in the adaptation mechanism of the MRAS estimator, to show the performance and robustness of the proposed MRAS-PSO/FOPI algorithm in use.

  • Hybrid Flatness-Based Control of Dual Star Induction Machine Drive System
           for More Electrical Aircraft

    • Abstract: This paper develops a precise method control system for tracking control of a power drive system based on a multi-phase machine under motor parameter and load torque variations. By adding a simple feedforward term based on the flatness theory, a conventional flux oriented control (FOC) can be enforced to have a perfect tracking performance under model parameter and load torque variations. Hence, a hybrid flatness-based control (HFBC) technique is applied to the control of a dual star induction machine (DSIM) and compared to a classical vector control strategy regarding tracking behaviour, robustness, and perturbations rejection. Finally, the simulation and experimental results are provided to verify the effectiveness of the proposed HFBC under uncertainties such as motor parameter and load torque variations. Furthermore, an enhancement of the drive system’s control performances is demonstrated by the improvement of the technique of separation of the objectives of tracking and disturbance rejection. The simulation and experimental results are presented, demonstrating the superiority of the HFBC.

  • Design Improvement of Permanent Magnet Motor Using Single- and
           Multi-Objective Approaches

    • Abstract: Optimisation, or optimal design, has become a fundamental aspect of engineering across various domains, including power devices, power systems, and industrial systems. Engineers and academics have been actively involved in optimising these systems to achieve better performance, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness. Optimising electrical machines, including permanent magnet motors, is a complex task. It often involves solving intricate problems with various parameters and constraints. Engineers use different optimisation methods to tackle these challenges. Depending on the specific requirements and goals of a design project, engineers may employ either single-objective or multi-objective optimisation approaches. Single-objective optimisation focuses on optimising a single objective, while multi-objective optimisation considers multiple conflicting objectives. In optimisation, objective functions are mathematical representations of what needs to be optimised. In this case, optimising the efficiency of the motor, reducing cogging torque, and minimising the total weight of active materials are defined as possible objective functions. Genetic algorithms are nature based algorithms that are commonly used in engineering to find optimal solutions to complex problems, including those with multiple objectives. In this paper, after conducting optimisations using different objective functions and methods, a comparative analysis of the results is performed. This helps in understanding the trade-offs and benefits of different design choices. Finite element analysis (FEA) is a computational method used to analyse the physical properties and behaviours of complex structures and systems. In this case, FEA is used to validate and analyse selected optimisation solutions to ensure they meet the desired characteristics and parameters. Overall, this work demonstrates the interdisciplinary nature of engineering, where mathematics, computer science (for optimisation algorithms), and physics (for FEA) converge to improve the performance and efficiency of electrical machines. It also underscores the importance of considering multiple objectives in design processes to find optimal solutions that strike a balance between competing goals.

  • Analysis of PMSM Short-Circuit Detection Systems Using Transfer Learning
           of Deep Convolutional Networks

    • Abstract: Modern permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) diagnostic systems are now combined with advanced artificial intelligence techniques, such as deep neural networks. However, the design of such systems is mainly focussed on a selected type of damage or motor type with a limited range of rated parameters. The application of the idea of transfer learning (TL) allows the fully automatic extraction of universal fault symptoms, which can be used for various diagnostic tasks. In the research, the possibility of using the TL idea in the implementation of PMSM stator windings fault-detection systems was considered. The method is based on the characteristic symptoms of stator defects determined for another type of motor or mathematical model in the target diagnostic application of PMSM. This paper presents a comparison of PMSM motor inter-turn short circuit fault detection systems using TL of a deep convolutional network. Due to the use of direct phase current signal analysis by the convolutional neural network (CNN), it was possible to ensure high accuracy of fault detection with simultaneously short reaction time to occurring fault. The technique used was based on the use of a weight coefficient matrix of a pre-trained structure, the adaptation of which was carried out for different sources of diagnostic information.

  • Nonlinear Optimal Control for the Nine-Phase Permanent Magnet Synchronous
           Motor

    • Abstract: Multi-phase electric motors and in particular nine-phase permanent magnet synchronous motors (9-phase PMSMs) find use in electric actuation, traction and propulsion systems. They exhibit advantages comparing to three-phase motors because of achieving high power and torque rates under moderate variations of voltage and currents in their phases, while also exhibiting fault tolerance. In this article a novel nonlinear optimal control method is developed for the dynamic model of nine-phase PMSMs. First it is proven that the dynamic model of these motors is differentially flat. Next, to apply the proposed nonlinear optimal control, the state-space model of the nine-phase PMSM undergoes an approximate linearization process at each sampling instance. The linearisation procedure is based on first-order Taylor-series expansion and on the computation of the system’s Jacobian matrices. It takes place at each sampling interval around a temporary operating point which is defined by the present value of the system’s state vector and by the last sampled value of the control inputs vector. For the linearized model of the system an H-infinity feedback controller is designed. To compute the feedback gains of this controller an algebraic Riccati equation is repetitively solved at each time-step of the control algorithm. The global stability properties of the control scheme are proven through Lyapunov analysis. First it is demonstrated that the H-infinity tracking performance criterion is satisfied, which signifies robustness of the control scheme against model uncertainty and perturbations. Moreover, under mild assumptions it is also proven that the control loop is globally asymptotically stable. Additionally it is experimentally confirmed through simulation tests, that the nonlinear optimal control method achieves fast and accurate tracking of reference setpoints under moderate variations of the control inputs. Finally, to apply state estimation-based control without the need to measure the entire state vector of the nine-phase PMSM, the H-infinity Kalman Filter is used as a robust state estimator.

  • Enhancing PV Systems with Intelligent MPPT and Improved control strategy
           of Z-Source Inverter

    • Abstract: The Improved Z-Source Inverter (IZSI) has gained attention in the photovoltaic industry for its ability to boost PV voltage with a single-stage topology, simplifying system design and reducing costs. However, research on integrating IZSI into PV systems, particularly regarding the Maximum Power Point Tracker (MPPT) and IZSI control strategy, is limited. This study proposes an Intelligent Improved Particle Swarm Optimization (IPSO) algorithm as an MPPT method for PV systems under constant and varying irradiance conditions. The IPSO algorithm is compared to the FPA, CSA, and traditional MPPT algorithm (PSO), and the results demonstrate that IPSO outperforms all algorithms in terms of speed, efficiency, and convergence in finding the Maximum Power Point (MPP). Two methods, Simple Boost Control (SBC) and Maximum Constant Boost Control with Third Harmonic Injection (THIMCBC), are employed to control IZSI. Simulation results using MATLAB-Simulink show that both strategies successfully find and track the MPP, but THIMCBC exhibits superior voltage-boosting performance compared to SBC. Overall, the proposed IZSI topology with the IPSO MPPT method and THIMCBC IZSI control strategy offers several advantages, including improved voltage boost ability, reduced z-source capacitor voltage stress, inherent inrush current limitation, and cost-effectiveness. These advantages make the proposed system a promising solution for photovoltaic systems.

  • Model Predictive Controlled IM Drive based on IT2FNN Controller

    • Abstract: In this paper, the predictive torque control (PTC) based induction motor (IM) drive using an interval type-2 fuzzy neural network (IT2FNN) controller in the speed control loop is designed and tested in simulations. The states required for the proposed motor drive are estimated by extended complex Kalman filter (ECKF). The ECKF performs online estimations of stator currents, rotor fluxes, rotor mechanical speed, and rotor resistance. Compared to conventional extended Kalman filter (EKF), which estimates the same states/parameters, the designed ECKF has less computational burden because it does not contain matrix inverse and the matrix dimensions have been reduced. In addition, the rotor resistance estimated by ECKF is updated online to the PTC system. Thus, the performance of the PTC-based IM drive is improved against variations in the rotor resistance, whose value changes with operating conditions such as frequency and temperature. In order to force both the ECKF observer and the proposed IM drive, a challenging scenario containing the wide speed range operation of the IM is designed. Simulation results confirm the performance of the proposed speed-sensorless PTC-based drive that uses an IT2FNN controller in the speed control loop and the estimation performance of the ECKF observer.

  • Pulse-width Modulation Techniques in Two-level Voltage Source Inverters
           – State of the Art and Future Perspectives

    • Abstract: The core of most power electronic systems involving DC/AC conversion is a voltage source inverter (VSI) that runs on some pulsewidth modulation (PWM) strategy. Numerous PWM techniques have been reported in the literature over the past few decades, each having its own merits and limitations. This paper reviews some selected areas of two-level PWM VSI, namely proper utilisation of the DC bus without deteriorating the quality of the output waveform, switching-loss reduction in the linear and over-modulation zones, common-mode voltage and PWM strategies for its reduction or elimination, distortion of the output voltage owing to dead time, and its compensation. These phenomena are explained in brief, followed by discussions on different research works relevant to these areas, and their advantages and disadvantages. Finally, the paper shows prospective directions in which research may continue in these areas in future.

  • Optimisation of Model Predictive Torque Control Strategy with Standard and
           Multi-Objective Genetic Algorithms

    • Abstract: In this paper, the flux error-related weighting factor (WF) of the predictive torque control (PTC) strategy for induction motor (IM) control is optimised by a standard genetic algorithm (SGA) through speed errors only and multi-objective genetic algorithm (MOGA) through torque and flux errors. This paper compares the performances of both optimisation methods. Compared to MOGA, SGA offers a straightforward way to select WF and does not need a decision-making method to choose a final solution. But MOGA considers the given problem in a multi-objective way and directly optimises the control objectives of the PTC strate-gy. Comparisons are made over the flux and torque ripples, total harmonic distortion of stator phase current, and average switching frequency for different operating conditions. Simulation results show that both methods choose a close WF value. Consequently, SGA stands out in the optimisation of the PTC strategy with its simple structure.

  • Rotor Speed and Load Torque Estimations of Induction Motors via LSTM
           Network

    • Abstract: In this study, a long short-term memory (LSTM) based estimator using rotating axis components of the stator voltages and currents as inputs is designed to perform estimations of rotor mechanical speed and load torque values of the induction motor (IM) for electrical vehicle (EV) applications. For this aim, first of all, an indirect vector controlled IM drive is implemented in simulation to collect both training and test datasets. After the initial training, a fine-tuning process is applied to increase the robustness of the proposed LSTM network. Furthermore, the LSTM parameters, layer size, and hidden size are also optimised to increase the estimation performance. The proposed LSTM network is tested under two different challenging scenarios including the operation of the IM with linear and step-like load torque changes in a single direction and in both directions. To force the proposed LSTM network, it is also tested under the variation of stator and rotor resistances for the both-direction scenario. The obtained results confirm the highly satisfactory estimation performance of the proposed LSTM network and its applicability for the EV applications of the IMs.

  • Control of BLDC Motor Drive with Single Hall Sensor Considering Angle
           Compensation

    • Abstract: The traditional brushless DC motor uses three position sensors to realise six-step reversing control of the motor. The application of three position sensors increases the cost, whereas the sensorless control method represented by the back electromotive force method has the problem of low control accuracy. Therefore, the present research proposes the method of six-step motor reversing control by using single sensor, corrects the motor running state by using the peak–peak difference of phase current in the control process, and resultantly achieves a good control effect. The experimental results prove the control and correction method.

  • Neural Network-Based Optimisation of Sinusoidal PWM Controller for
           VSI-Driven BLDC Motor

    • Abstract: Although increasing the number of switches increases the switch losses, most designed controllers focus on controlling an inverter circuit with more than six switches. The paper aims to address this issue that arises in implementation of the voltage source inverter (VSI) for brushless DC (BLDC) motors. It optimises the sinusoidal pulse width modulation (PWM) controller, minimising total harmonic distortion (THD) while keeping the VSI’s circuit at six switches to avoid increased switching losses. This was achieved by applying an artificial neural network (ANN) to generate a signal, which combines with the already existing reference and carrier signals. The addition of the new signal to the existing signals contributed to generating more pulses compared with the conventional sinusoidal PWM. Simulink was used to design the system and analyse its performance with the conventional and neutral point clamped (NPC) VSI systems. Results indicated that the proposed system performs better when controlled with an LCC filter. Compared with the control experiments, its output waveform has the lowest THD value, which is 6.04%. The switching losses of all the systems were also computed. Results from the computation indicated that the proposed system is capable of reducing the switching losses by 0.6 kW compared with the NPC VSI brushless DC motor (BLDCM) system. BLDCM speed was tested across various conditions; the results are reported in Section 5.

  • Nonlinear Optimal Control for a Gas Compressor Actuated by a Five-Phase
           Induction Motor

    • Abstract: The article proposes a nonlinear optimal control method for the dynamic model of a gas centrifugal compressor being actuated by a five-phase induction motor (5-phase IM). To achieve high torque and high power in the functioning of gas compressors, 5-phase IM appear to be advantageous in comparison to three-phase synchronous or asynchronous electric machines. The dynamic model of the integrated compression system, which comprises the gas compressor and the 5-phase IM, is first written in a nonlinear and multivariable state-space form. It is proven that the electrically driven gas-compression system is differentially flat. Next, this system is approximately linearised around a temporary operating point that is recomputed at each sampling interval. The linearisation is based on first-order Taylor series expansion and uses the computation of the Jacobian matrices of the state-space model of the integrated system. For the linearised state-space description of the compressor and 5-phase IM, a stabilising optimal (H-infinity) feedback controller is designed. This controller achieves a solution to the nonlinear optimal control problem of the compressor and 5-phase IM system under model uncertainty and external perturbations. The feedback gains of the controller are computed by solving an algebraic Riccati equation at each iteration of the control method. Lyapunov analysis is used to demonstrate global stability for the control loop. Additionally, the H-infinity Kalman filter is used as a robust state estimator, which allows for implementing sensorless control for the gas compression system.

  • Active Current Sensor Fault-Tolerant Control of Induction Motor Drive with
           Online Neural Network-Based Rotor and Stator Resistance Estimation

    • Abstract: This article presents an active current sensor (CS) fault-tolerant control (FTC) strategy for induction motor (IM) drive with adaptation of rotor and stator resistances. The stator current estimator with online adaptation of resistance parameters was applied for the reconstruction of missing current signals. A model reference adaptive system (MRAS), based on a neural network (NN), was used to estimate the rotor resistance. Additionally, stator resistance estimation was applied based on ratio index. The use of such a solution allowed for a significant increase in the quality of stator current reconstruction, which is particularly important for the design of CS fault detection (FD) and compensation algorithms. A wide range of simulation studies have been carried out for different operating conditions of the IM drive. The results showed that applying rotor and stator resistance estimation can improve the quality of stator current estimation by up to approximately 95% under rated operating point. The study was carried out for nominal and low speeds, with two, one, and without healthy CS.

  • Analysis of the Drive of the Electric Vehicle with Six-Phase
           Induction Motor

    • Abstract: The article presents the analysis of the drive system of the electric vehicle with a six-phase induction motor. The mathematical models of the six-phase induction motor and model reference adaptive system (MRASF) estimator are presented, and the description of the voltage source inverter, space vector modulator and bidirectional buck–boost converter is shown. The direct field-oriented control (DFOC) system and the direct torque control with space vector modulation (DTC-SVM) system are analysed. Results of simulation studies of these control methods and comparative analysis are shown. The DTC-SVM method is selected as the method with the best properties, and a full model of the electric vehicle drive system is built using this method. The detailed description of the drive system of the electric vehicle with a six-phase induction motor and DTC-SVM control system and the results of simulation tests for this drive system are presented. The aim of the authors and an element of novelty is to develop and test a drive system for an electric vehicle with a six-phase induction motor, adaptive speed estimator and extensive space vector modulator.

  • Multi-Step FEA-Based Design and Performance Analysis for a Single-Phase
           PM Brushless DC Motor

    • Abstract: In the article, an approach to design a novel single-phase permanent magnet (PM) brushless DC (BLDC) motor, based on multi-step FEA numerical prototyping, is presented. The designing procedure is carried out by using a series of 2D finite element simulations, until the design for a best performing PM BLDC motor is obtained. The proposed novel motor topology is developed using a generic motor, and through several steps, asymmetrical stator poles are devised, where one pair is particularly shaped. Permanent magnets are also simultaneously shaped. The aim of this research study is to improve performance characteristics of the motor by more efficient utilisation of active materials during the manufacture of rotor poles and stator cores. The magnetic field distribution in the motor cross-section, along with several other relevant electromagnetic and electromechanical characteristics, are computed, presented in figures and charts and analysed. The cogging torque and static torque waveforms, as well as the distribution of flux density and the air-gap flux, flux linkage and the induced back-emf, are in the focus of the presented research study. The results show that the novel design topology reveals featured operating characteristics, providing a smooth overall performance of the PM BLDC motor.

  • Estimation of Output Voltage Ripple in Phase-Staggered Series-Connected
           

    • Abstract: In booster synchrotron, fast-ramped power converters (FRPCs) are used for ramping up the magnetic field of electromagnets connected in series, at a fast rate, typically 1,000s of ampere per second. In large accelerators, the number of electromagnets is large. Therefore, during ramping, the peak value of driving voltage becomes prohibitively large considering the insulation requirement of the magnets and cables. The power converter is therefore developed by connecting a suitable number of smaller voltage rated modules in series. The series-connected modules are operated in phase-staggered mode to reduce the output voltage ripple or to reduce the filtering requirement to meet the prescribed ripple voltage. Since the filter component values predominantly decide the dynamic response, the achievable small-signal bandwidth of the control loop and hence the achievable tracking accuracy of the ramping output current are essentially governed by the filter components. To optimise the filter design, quantification of overall ripple voltage is crucial, that too under the most practical conditions considering non-ideal conditions. In this paper, estimation of overall ripple voltage is performed for series-connected two-quadrant power converters (TQPCs) operating in phase-staggering mode for ideal and non-ideal conditions. Simulation and experimental verification results are shown to be in good agreement with the analytical results.

  • Current-zero-crossing Shift for Compensation of Dead-time Distortion in
           Pulse-width-modulated Voltage Source Inverter

    • Abstract: Accurate current polarity detection is a major issue for successful compensation of dead-time distortion in pulse-width-modulated (PWM) voltage source inverter. The present study is concerned with the concept of shift in current-zero-crossing due to dead-time distortion compensation that results in error in current polarity detection and thus causes a problem with regard to the successful continuation of compensation. The phenomenon is analysed in detail, along with its dependence on different factors. The proposed concept is validated in digital simulation and also through experimental verification. The study also recommends the possible correction to be incorporated in view of such zero-crossing shift for achieving proper compensation, especially in case of current-sensor-less compensation techniques.

  • A Novel Feedback Linearisation Control of Flyback Converter

    • Abstract: This paper presents a novel approach for feedback linearisation in a continuous conduction mode (CCM) of the flyback converter. Due to the unstable zero dynamics, a flyback converter has highly non-linear behaviour. Flyback converters mostly use the indirect (current) control mechanism. In contrast, this paper shows a direct control of the output voltage of a flyback converter with feedback linearisation (a non-linear control method). In the designed controller, an error integrator is applied to improve the dynamic and steady-state behaviour of the controller. To design the feedback linearisation method, the state-space averaged model is determined. The converter and the proposed control are tested in a MatLab/Simulink environment, and the results are compared with other optimal controller methods. The results provide feedback about the efficiency and practical implementation of the proposed method.
