  • Wide Bandgap Devices Continue to Evolve for Aerospace Applications

      Abstract: From electric aircrafts to satellites and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), the need for fuel saving and greenhouse reduction continues relentlessly. As a result, electrification seems to be catching rapidly in aerospace and aviation applications. This demands new generation of power converters, motor drives, and solid-state circuit breakers with unprecedented power density, efficiency, and reliability. Wide bandgap (WBG) power devices, such as silicon carbide (SiC) MOSFETs and gallium nitride (GaN) high-electron mobility transistors (HEMTs) and gate injection transistors (GITs), are regarded as critical candidates for such applications. While WBG devices have been serving the needs of commercial and industrial systems for more than a decade, there are still many challenges for WBG devices and their circuits for aviation applications, which include radiation hardness, extreme operation temperature, high altitude, high-voltage, high dv/dt, and high di/dt operation induced issues.

You may have seen the fascinating photos of these events posted on our PELS website. Now our society has become the eighth largest society within IEEE, and is continuing its steady growth in membership throughout the world, including higher quality in publications, more agility in technical programs, and excellence in conferences and expositions. In addition, PELS is expanding initiatives to fully serve its members.

Automakers are already moving quickly to innovate, reduce electric drive costs and leverage technology to respond to this new environment.

      Abstract: Aerospace applications are not new but potentially the final frontiers for power electronics research and developments.       Abstract: There is a growing trend in aircraft electrification, which can reduce green-house gas emissions, reduce audible noise, reduce maintenance needs, lower cost, and improve safety. Moving from mechanical, pneumatic, and hydraulic power to electric power requires architecture changes, more electric power, and improvements in electric power generation, distribution, and conversion. There are two main categories of aircraft electrification in aviation industry: the more-electric aircraft (MEA), which replaces secondary aircraft systems traditionally supplied by pneumatic, hydraulic, or mechanical power with electrical systems; and the electrified aircraft propulsion (EAP), which includes turbo-electric, hybrid-electric, and all-electric architectures.

  • Totem-Pole PFC Reliability and Performance Improvement With Advanced
           Controls

      Abstract: Totem-pole power factor correction (PFC) is a simple and highly efficient topology. It is being widely used in high-density and high-efficiency power supply design. However, engineers still face many design challenges, including PFC current reversing prevention at input voltage drop, lightning surge protection, current harmonic reduction, and ac crossover current spike elimination. These challenges are not closely related to each other and there is no single control that can solve all the design issues. This article reviews the main design challenges and provides comprehensive solutions to these issues. Most of the solutions are novel or are used for the first time in PFC control. These solutions are integrated into the industry’s first continuous conduction mode (CCM) totem-pole PFC analog controller IVCC1102 [1]. A 2.5 kW SiC-based totem-pole PFC prototype [1] is built to demonstrate the robustness and performance improvement with the proposed solutions.

      Abstract: Nowadays, energy generation is on the path from centralized to distributed generation paradigm to improve the efficiency and resilience of power systems. One of the major developments in the energy sector was the introduction of dc microgrids that facilitate direct integration of energy sources, storage, and dc loads. Also, most consumer and industrial devices are naturally dc devices or contain a dc link, which makes them compatible with dc microgrids. Hence, dc distribution is an efficient tool for combining dc energy sources and battery energy storage with typical loads that are predominantly compatible with dc microgrids. In the foreseeable future, widespread adoption of dc microgrids will rely on the ubiquitous use of dc–dc converters. Apart from cost concerns, the long-term reliability of power electronic systems is under scrutiny by the power industry, which prefers simple but highly reliable/available solutions.

  • Ranking Qi Wireless Power Transmitters by Efficiency

      Abstract: The Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) Energy Star Task Force (ESTF), comprised of engineers from major cellphone and consumer electronics manufacturers, test houses, and others, developed a proposed efficiency-test protocol for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), intended to rank Qi wireless power transmitters on the basis of power-transfer efficiency. Key to this test protocol is the assumption that a single, optimally designed test receiver may be used to accurately assess transmitter efficiency and enable ranking. The possibility exists that phones using different power receiver designs (e.g., different “friendly metal” profiles, different electrical designs) will interact with transmitters and report different rankings for a given transmitter, thus invalidating the proposed test protocol. Experiments to prove or disprove the assumption that a single optimized receiver can be used as a proxy to fairly compare and rank the real-world power-transfer efficiency performance of Qi wireless power transmitters were conducted. As a result of these experiments, the WPC has concluded that because of receiver–transmitter interaction, it is not possible to rank transmitters by efficiency for more than one receiver design but decreasing the transmitter’s standby power could save as much energy over a 24-h period as improving full-power efficiency by 10%.

      Abstract: An insurmountable wall of acronyms glued together with complex organizational dynamics can present a complicated scenario for those wanting to become more involved with the IEEE Power Electronics Society (PELS). This wall can feel even more unsurmountable to those new to engaging with the IEEE, especially students, recent graduates, or diverse members. Industry members may struggle to find relevant opportunities, and non-native English speakers may find understanding the jargon too large of an obstacle. PELS’s five-year strategic plan lists and cites engagement of its membership several times, especially with respect to diversity and inclusion and industrial membership [1]. Therefore, the leadership of PELS, with the assistance of the PELS Women in Engineering (WIE) Committee, have been investigating best practices for increasing engagement levels and satisfaction.

      Abstract: A longside resistors and inductors, capacitors are one of the fundamental electronic components. In fact, an argument could be made that they are more versatile than their other passive counterparts, essential to providing everything from energy storage and filtering to smoothing and RF tuning. About one trillion capacitors are produced every year, with around 80% of that number being made up of multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs) [1]. Deployed across the entire power delivery network, the ubiquity of these miniature devices is reflected in the fact that there are anywhere between 400 to over 1000 of them in the latest smartphones [2] and as many as 5000 in a modern vehicle [3]. And the demand for MLCCs continues to grow rapidly. According to the latest report from research firm Research and Markets, for example, the global MLCC market is expected to see a compound annual growth rate of 13.8%, increasing from USD 14.0 billion in 2022 to USD 26.6 billion by 2027.

  • Prof. Rajashekara Wins the 2022 Global Energy Prize [Society News]

      Abstract: Prof. Kaushik Rajashekara, distinguished professor of engineering at the University of Houston (UH), Houston, TX, USA, and IEEE Life Fellow, has been awarded the prestigious Global Energy Prize for 2022 for his outstanding contributions to transportation electrification and energy efficiency technologies while reducing power generation emissions. He is one of three laureates (two from the USA and one from Russia) announced by the Global Energy Association in Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia, in July. Unlike previous years, nominations this year were a record high at 119 nominations from 43 countries. The award ceremony will take place during the “Latin America in Global Energy Symposium” in Montevideo, Uruguay, 24–25 October 2022.

      Abstract: This year marks the 35th anniversary of IEEE Power Electronics Society (PELS) and PELS Day was celebrated on 20 June with much enthusiasm across the world. PELS chapters and student branch chapters and other groups worldwide organized events, lectures, workshops, industry visits, and social events to commemorate the occasion. In addition, on 26 July, PELS executives organized a virtual closing ceremony hosted by Young Professional (YP) Committee Member Dr. Joseph Kozak, a senior electrical engineer at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory, Laurel, MD, USA.

      Abstract: On 29 June 2022, the IEEE Power Electronics Society (PELS) United Kingdom and Ireland (UK&I) Section Chapter hosted a series of online talks on professional developments with IEEE in honor of PELS Day. Chapter Chair Bing Ji began the event with an opening speech and presentation of the vision and mission of the Chapter. Dr. Ji also explained the importance, benefits, and opportunities of joining the PELS community, such as supporting the Distinguished Lecturer program, receiving best thesis awards, and establishing new student branches. Over 80 joined the event by Zoom and positive feedback was received from the attendees (Figure 1). The Chapter would like to thank all who joined this event and is looking forward to engaging with participants in the future events.

      Abstract: With the COVID-19 pandemic restrictions easing and the slow restart of traveling, the IEEE Power Electronics Society (PELS) Swiss Chapter has returned to in-person technical events. For example, Prof. Dr. Victor Veliadis (North Carolina State University, USA) gave a lecture on the topic “SiC Power Device Commercialization: Status and Barriers to Overcome” in January 2022 and Prof. Dr. Leon Tolbert (University of Tennessee, USA) presented a lecture on the topic “Application of HV SiC MOSFETs for Medium Voltage Converters” in May 2022. Both talks were hosted by Prof. Johann W. Kolar at ETH, Zurich, Switzerland. The most recent lecture was presented by Prof. Dr. Minjie Chen in June 2022 and the topic was “Hybrid Switched-Capacitor Circuits and Magnetics for High-Performance Power Conversion.” It was given at the EPFL, Lausanne, and hosted by Prof. Drazen Dujic (Figure 1).

      Abstract: The dilemma of which came first, the chicken or the egg, has been debated for millennia. A more recent debate among power electronics engineers is which comes first—innovations in devices or innovations in circuits' This was, as I recall, even the topic of a rap at session at an IEEE Applied Power Electronics Conference and Exposition (APEC) a few years back. Semiconductor device engineers argue that without advances in new and improved devices advances in circuits and topologies would not be possible. Circuit engineers argue that the basic nature of the switching devices has never changed and that advances in power electronics are all due to innovations in circuits and topologies.
