      Abstract: An Nth-order tunable bandpass filter (BPF) structure with extended passband bandwidth has been proposed in this paper based on the novel tunable resonator and coupling structure. The designed tunable resonator is composed of two coupled lines and one varactor diode, while the presented tunable coupling structure is constructed by two cascaded transmission lines and one short-circuited varactor diode. Moreover, the even-(odd-) method and lumped-element equivalent circuit are employed to analyze the operating mechanisms of the designed Nth-order tunable BPF. Specifically, the frequency tuning range is determined by the characteristic impedance and electrical length of coupled line when the varactor diode is within the fixed tuning range. Then, the design procedure for the Nth-order tunable BPFs is proposed. To demonstrate the presented idea, the second- and third-order fully tunable BPFs have been designed and simulated. Finally, a second-order tunable BPF with the compact size of 0.03λg × 0.13λg has been fabricated and measured, and the measured center frequencies are ranging from 0.91 to 1.46 GHz with the passband bandwidths wider than 11.2%.

      Abstract: This paper presents a miniaturized tri- and quad-band power divider (PD)based on substrate integrated waveguide (SIW). By adopting different types of modified circular complementary split-ring resonators on the top surface of SIW, multiple passbands are generated propagating below the SIW cut-off frequency. The working principle is based on evanescent mode propagation that decreases the operating frequency of the PD and helps in the miniaturization of the proposed structure. The operating frequency of the proposed PD can be individually controlled by changing the dimensions of the resonator. To verify the proposed concept, a tri-band and a quad-band PD exhibiting 3 dB equal power division at 2.41/3.46/4.65 GHz and 2.42/3.78/4.74/5.8 GHz are designed using the full-wave simulator, validated through circuit model, fabricated and experimentally verified. The measured results agree well with the simulations. The proposed PDs have good performance in terms of reasonable insertion loss, isolation, minimum amplitude and phase imbalance, smaller footprint, easy fabrication and integration. The size of the fabricated prototype is 18.3 mm × 8.4 mm, which corresponds to 0.205λg × 0.094λg, λg being the guided wavelength at the first operating frequency.

  • FDA-MIMO for target localization via multi-pulse tensor decomposition

      Abstract: By combining multiple input multiple output (MIMO) technology and multiple matched filters with frequency diverse array (FDA), FDA-MIMO radar can be used to achieve two-dimensional target localization with range and angle. In this paper, we propose two FDA-MIMO multi-pulse target localization methods based on tensor decomposition. Based on the canonical polyadic decomposition theory, the signal models of CPD-DP-FDA with double-pulse and CPD-SP-FDA with stepped frequency pulses are established. By analyzing the signal processing procedures of the two schemes, the indicator beampattern used for target localization is obtained. The parameter estimation accuracy of the proposed method is investigated in single target and multiple targets scenarios, and the proposed method is compared with the traditional double-pulse method. The results show that the target localization method based on tensor decomposition can effectively solve the problem of multi-target indication ambiguity. The target positioning effect can be further improved by combining stepped frequency pulses. The derivation of Cramer–Rao Lower Bound (CRLB) demonstrates the superiority of the method.

      Abstract: The launch of the Sentinel-1B satellite in April 2016 completed the two-satellite synthetic aperture radar (SAR) constellation of the European Copernicus Sentinel-1 mission. The European Space Agency executed the calibration of this sensor during the commissioning phase and an independent calibration by the German Aerospace Center (DLR) in 2016. The calibration parameters must be monitored to assess the stability of the instrument. This study reports the temporal stability assessment of radiometric calibration and image quality parameters of Sentinel-1B SAR data using the corner reflector (CR) array, Surat Basin, Australia. Impulse response functions generated from the CRs in the satellite images were used to derive the image quality parameters. The average radar cross-section difference between estimated and theoretical values (38.40 dB m2) was 0.53 dB m2 for 1.5 m CRs, which is accordant with the absolute radiometric accuracy specified for the Sentinel-1 SAR system. Derived image quality parameters viz. the mean peak-to-side lobe ratio, mean integrated side lobe ratio, and spatial resolutions in the range and azimuth directions were found to be accordant with the specified value for the Sentinel-1 SAR system. The results indicate the excellent quality of the Sentinel-1B data.

  • Design of ultra-compact ISM band implantable patch antenna for bio-medical
           applications

      Abstract: In this paper, an ultra-compact implantable antenna for biomedical applications is proposed. The proposed implanted meandered compact patch antenna is implanted inside the body at a depth of 2 mm. The proposed antenna was designed with Roger RO3003 (ɛr = 3) as substrate with an overall size of dimensions 5 × 5 × 0.26 mm3. The radiating element is a square patch antenna with different size rectangular slots and coaxial feeding. The proposed implantable antenna resonates at 2.45 GHz (from 2.26 to 2.72 GHz) frequency with a bandwidth of 460 MHz and a gain of −22.6 dB. The specific absorption rate has been considered for health care considerations, and the result is within the limits of the federal communication commission. The measured and simulated scattering parameters are compared, and good agreements are achieved. The proposed antenna is simulated and investigated for biomedical applications suitability.

  • Metasurface-based electromagnetic structure for electromagnetic absorption

      Abstract: In this paper, a metasurface (MS)-based multi-functional electromagnetic (EM) structure is proposed to realize its two different applications, namely absorption and radiation. The proposed structure is based on periodic arrays of disk-shaped metallic patches and split rings with four embedded lumped resistors. The metallic vias are inserted from top to bottom to connect the disk-shaped patches with a feeding network designed on the bottom layer where two p-i-n switches are embedded in the feeding network to alter the different functions of the proposed structure. For free space incident plan wave, the designed structure works as an absorber when the p-i-n switches are switched OFF. The absorber operates over a frequency band from 6.2 GHz to 8.2 GHz and unchanged over an incident angle from 0° to 30° for both TE and TM polarized incident waves. The same structure also works as a low scattering and high gain radiator when the p-i-n switches are turned ON and radiate within absorbing frequency band, i.e. from 7.5 to 8.0 GHz. The designed structure is fabricated and experimentally verified for EM absorption and radiation applications.

      Abstract: The μ-negative metamaterial (MNG) two-element MIMO antenna design was proposed in this article for WiMAX (2.5–2.8 GHz), WLAN (3.2–5.9 GHz), and ITU band (8.15−8.25 GHz) applications. The first design of the MIMO antenna operates at 2.7 and 4.9 GHz frequencies. In order to reduce the mutual coupling, a defective ground structure is used. For further isolation improvement, an MNG unit cell is placed in between the two radiating elements at a distance of 10 mm. The designed antenna elements have better than −23 dB coupling isolation between the two radiating elements. Moreover, with MNG an additional frequency of 8.2 GHz is obtained, which is useful for ITU band applications. The proposed antenna bandwidth is expanded by 19% in the lower operational band, 20% in the second operational band, and 32% in the higher frequency band with the MNG unit cell. From the analysis, the proposed antenna is suitable for WiMAX/WLAN/ITU band applications because of its low enveloped correlation coefficient, and highest directive gain and low mutual coupling between the radiating components. The proposed antenna was simulated, fabricated, and measured with the help of the Schwarz ZVL vector network analyzer and anechoic chamber. Both measured and simulated results are highly accurate and highly recommended for WiMAX/WLAN/ITU bands.

      Abstract: A triple-frequency operated concentric annular ring microstrip antenna which is single fed is presented. The proposed antenna with three concentric annular rings and two symmetrical notches on its outer ring and having a cross slot in its ground surface shows triple band at resonance frequency 1.22760, 1.57542, and 2.18 GHz, respectively. At the first two bands (GPS L2 and GPS L1), circular polarization characteristic is observed and the third band observes linear polarization finding its application in Universal Mobile Telecommunication System (UMTS). The complete dimension of the antenna designed and fabricated is only 51.6 × 51.6 × 1.6 mm3. Experimental results depict the proposed antenna gain of 3.31, 3.55, and 3.50 dBi in three bands, respectively, and closely matches with the theoretical results.

      Abstract: To satisfy the increasing requirements of wireless communication, a compact dual band MIMO antenna is presented in this paper. The presented antenna consists of two symmetric radiating elements operating at both 3.5 and 4.5 GHz bands. To enhance the isolation between the two radiating elements, an I-shaped decoupling structure is introduced. The measured −10 dB reflection coefficients frequency bands are 3.3–3.8 and 4.3–5.8 GHz. The measured isolation S21 between the two radiating elements are better than 15 and 17 dB at the lower and higher frequency band, respectively. The overall dimension of the proposed antenna is 50 × 22 × 1.59 mm3. The measured result indicates that the proposed antenna can be a good candidate for 5 G/WLAN wireless communication.

      Abstract: In this paper, a novel ultra-wide-band antenna backed by a suspended ground for an enhancement of bandwidth and a frequency selective surface (FSS) reflector for the enhancement of gain is proposed in order to meet the specific coverage requirements for broadband applications. The impedance bandwidth of the proposed antenna is 13.4 GHz (1.8–15.2 GHz). To enhance the gain of the antenna, a FSS reflector is employed below the suggested ultra wide-band antenna. A novel FSS, which consists of 5 × 5 array of elements, located at a distance of 1.01 λ (36.14 mm) below the proposed antenna. There is 4–5 dBi improvement in antenna gain after application of the FSS. In order to observe the signal correlation of the proposed antenna, the time domain analysis using similar antennas in face-to-face and side-to-side scenarios has been performed using the EM simulation tool CST-STUDIO. The simulated results of the proposed antenna exhibit good agreement with the experimental results of the prototype model antenna.

      Abstract: In this paper, we present a 28 GHz antenna array in package which covers the n257 and n258 frequency bands designated for 5G applications. The dipole antenna array is placed on one of the two re-distribution layers in the fan-out eWLB (embedded Wafer Level Ball Grid Array) package. For TX and RX, separate but identical antenna arrays are placed on each side of the die. The paper presents a novel horn-shaped heatsink which not only dissipates the heat, but also improves the radiation performance. The four-elements dipole array has the impedance bandwidth of almost 6 GHz (24–30 GHz) and shows a maximum realized gain of 9.5 dBi. Beam-steering in ± 35 deg is achieved in the azimuth plane (H-plane) by providing different phases to the dipoles through the chip. The measurements nicely agree with the simulation results.

      Abstract: In this study, we present a comprehensive dual-band ambient radio-frequency (RF) energy harvesting system, consisting of rectenna and power management circuit, to harvest energy from 2.45 and 5.8 GHz Wi-Fi. The rectenna employs a metamaterial antenna based on a split-ring resonator, which possesses omni-directional radiation pattern at both frequencies and compact size (0.18λ × 0.25λ at 2.45 GHz). The dual-band rectifier yields the highest efficiency of 42% at 2.45 GHz and 1 dBm input power, 30% at 5.8 GHz and − 7 dBm input power. The maximum RF-DC efficiency for each band is 72% at − 5 dBm and 27% at − 2 dBm, respectively. The power management circuit, consisting of a storing capacitor and a boost converter, is integrated to produce a stable, sufficient output voltage. The energy harvesting system, with its comprehensiveness, is suitable for supplying low-power wireless sensor nodes for indoor applications.

  • Compact, flexible and highly selective wideband complementary FSS with
           high angular stability

      Abstract: This article presents a novel miniaturized (0.105λ0 × 0.105λ0) flexible complementary frequency selective surfaces (CFSS) structure with sharp band edge selectivity and very high angular stability. To explore two diverse applications as a passband and stopband filter, a novel complementary convoluted square loop (CCSL) type structure has been designed and investigated on ultrathin dielectric material of thickness 0.0023λ0. The second-order wide controllable passband with fractional bandwidth of 19.23% (−3 dB) and remarkably wide stopband of 64.7% (−10 dB) and 54.8% (−20 dB) respectively have been achieved by using a cascaded resonating structure which is composed of asymmetrical meandered CCSL array, arranged on two ultrathin dielectric layers with air foam separation. This particular format would lead to sharp band edge selectivity with steep roll-off (72.43 dB/GHz) and an excellent passband selectivity factor (0.731). An equivalent lumped LC circuit in conjunction with the transmission line model has also been adopted to comprehend the physical mechanism of the proposed single layer and double layer structures. Further, better passband and stopband angular stability at an oblique incident angle of 45° and the bending characteristics have also been investigated thoroughly for the proposed flexible CFSS to check their employability in different conformal structures with WiMAX passband and WLAN stopband application.

  • Hyperparameters optimization of neural network using improved particle
           swarm optimization for modeling of electromagnetic inverse problems

      Abstract: Optimization of hyperparameters of artificial neural network (ANN) usually involves a trial and error approach which is not only computationally expensive but also fails to predict a near-optimal solution most of the time. To design a better optimized ANN model, evolutionary algorithms are widely utilized to determine hyperparameters. This work proposes hyperparameters optimization of the ANN model using an improved particle swarm optimization (IPSO) algorithm. The different ANN hyperparameters considered are a number of hidden layers, neurons in each hidden layer, activation function, and training function. The proposed technique is validated using inverse modeling of two meander line electromagnetic bandgap unit cells and a slotted ultra-wideband antenna loaded with EBG structures. Three other evolutionary algorithms viz. hybrid PSO, conventional PSO, and genetic algorithm are also adopted for the hyperparameter optimization of the ANN models for comparative analysis. Performances of all the models are evaluated using quantitative assessment parameters viz. mean square error, mean absolute percentage deviation, and coefficient of determination (R2). The comparative investigation establishes the accurate and efficient prediction capability of the ANN models tuned using IPSO compared to other evolutionary algorithms.
