      Abstract: This third issue of the 14th year of the magazine recognizes five of many excellent tutorials presented this year at the International Solid-State Circuits Conference. A tutorial by Gabriele Manganaro discusses techniques for extending the bandwidth of current-steering digital-to-analog converters. This is followed by a tutorial on wireless power transfer for medical devices by Mehdi Kiani. Jeffrey Walling’s tutorial motivates mixed-signal RF transceivers as a means of providing additional functionality to future RF systems. In their tutorial, Jae-sun Seo, Jyotishman Saikia, Jian Meng, Wangxin He, Han-sok Suh, Anupreetham, Yuan Liao, Ahmed Hasssan, and Injune Yeo provide an overview and comparison of recent digital and analog artificial intelligence accelerators. Lastly, Shidhartha Das examines self-sensing processing as a crucial component for mitigating the impact of process variations on integrated systems.

      Abstract: The current-steering DAC is the most common architecture for medium resolution and ultrahigh data rates, extending well to tens of giga samples per seconds in nanometer MOS process technologies. It is commonly found in all types of communication systems, instrumentation, and consumer applications, among others, due to its capability of efficiently synthesizing the analog output on a low impedance load. This tutorial builds upon previous ones, pointing to a variety of techniques that extend the current-steering DAC’s dynamic performance to an ever-higher input data rate and analog output frequency.

      Abstract: Wireless power transfer (WPT) plays an important role in medical devices that require contactless energy transfer for either direct powering or recharging their small batteries. Miniaturizing medical devices and improving their WPT link robustness against different variations (e.g., distance, alignment, and load changes) also demands an efficient and adaptive power-management IC (PMIC) to convert the incoming ac power carrier into one or multiple usable dc voltage supplies. This article summarizes the key techniques for WPT and PMIC design. It discusses different modalities for WPT, including inductive, ultrasonic, capacitive, and magnetoelectric (ME) methods, with a focus on their applicability in different types of medical devices with different dimensions, implantation depths, and power requirements. It is concluded that ultrasonic and ME modalities are suitable for WPT to deeply implanted small devices with low power consumption, while inductive and capacitive methods are more suitable for WPT to large implants with shorter depth and higher power consumption. This article also summarizes different PMIC techniques for inductive WPT, particularly conventional voltage mode and more recent current-mode (and reconfigurable) techniques, with an emphasis on their suitability for different input voltage and loading conditions.

      Abstract: For state-of-the-art artificial intelligence (AI) accelerators, there have been large advances in both all-digital and analog/mixed-signal circuit-based designs. This article presents a practical overview and comparison of recent digital and analog AI accelerators. We first introduce hardware-efficient AI algorithms, which have been targeted for many AI hardware designs. Next, we present a survey of 1) all-digital AI accelerators, including designs with new dataflow, low precision, and sparsity, and 2) analog/mixed-signal AI accelerators featuring switch-capacitor circuits and in-memory computing (IMC) with ADCs. Recent advances of AI accelerators in both digital and analog design approaches are summarized, and emerging AI accelerator designs are discussed.

      Abstract: High-performance systems that form the compute backbone of the IoT are increasingly challenged by the stringent compute requirements of emerging cloud-native applications. This is particularly evident for modern machine-learning and artificial intelligence applications. As an example, consider the neural network (NN) training problem. NNs for natural language processing applications already require training a trillion parameters (shown in Figure 1), thereby imposing a 100× growth in compute requirements, all within a year [1]!
