      Abstract: The papers in this special section focus on designing technologies to support professional and workplace learning in situated practices. In an era of global, organizational, and technological change, all of which are transforming the world of work, professional and workplace learning are critical for employability and organizational competitiveness. A range of fundamental transformations is changing how people work. Digital technologies are replacing human labor and, at the same time, are accelerating the expansion of job roles and work practices. Work is becoming increasingly specialized, which means that professionals in collaborative and networked ways across discipline and organization boundaries. In parallel, labor is increasingly decentralized, making decisionmaking more distributed and raising the need for remote communication and collaboration. Subsequently, work is becoming more independent from time and place, as people connect, collaborate, and work via digital technologies. These changes come with a need for substantial and continuous workplace learning, and with the need for changes in how workplace learning happens. Of course, digital technologies are already used to provide learning and training in workplaces. However, most of these learning technologies have been developed for formal education (e.g., K- 12 and higher education) rather than in workplace contexts. There is a need to understand and evidence workplace learning needs and to further develop technologies that can support and scale workplace learning.

  • Design and Evaluation of a Choreography-Based Virtual Reality Authoring
           Tool for Experiential Learning in Industrial Training

      Abstract: The use of virtual reality (VR) for industrial training helps minimize risks and costs by allowing more frequent and varied use of experiential learning activities, leading to active and improved learning. However, creating VR training experiences is costly and time-consuming, requiring software development experts. Additionally, current authoring tools lack integration with existing data and are desktop-oriented, which detach the pedagogic process of creating the immersive experience from experiencing it in a situated context. In this article, we present a novel interactive approach for immersive authoring of VR-based experiential training by the trainers themselves, from inside the virtual environment and without the support of development experts. The design includes identifying interactable elements, such as 3-D models, equipment, tools, settings, and environment. The trainer also specifies by demonstration the actions to be performed by trainees, as a virtual choreography. During course execution, trainees’ activities are also registered as virtual choreographies and matched to those specified by the trainer. Thus, trainer and trainee are culturally situated within their area semantics and social discourse, rather than adopting concepts of the VR system for the learning content. We conducted a usability case study with professionals from an international wind energy company, using detailed models of wind turbines and real-world procedures. Trainers set up a training course using the immersive authoring tool, and trainees executed the course. The learning experience and usability were analyzed, and the training was certified by comparing real-world task completion between a user who had undergone virtual training and a user who did not.

  • Vocational Training With Microlearning—How Low-Immersive 360-Degree
           Learning Environments Support Work-Process-Integrated Learning

      Abstract: In-company training is facing new challenges in preparing employees for the demands of digitalized and automated manufacturing. New training concepts like microlearning are necessary to support work-process-related learning. To handle the limitations of microlearning, we develop a 360-degree learning system to demonstrate a realistic work environment and overcome the lack of design knowledge supporting the motivation and performance of employees using such systems. Based on a systematic literature review and semistructured interviews, we have developed design requirements for interactive 360-degree learning environments. We used a workshop-based mixed-method approach with interviews, concept maps, and video analysis to evaluate the motivation and performance of precision mechanics within a prototypical work-process-oriented learning environment in an intercompany vocational training center. The results show a positive effect on learning outcomes and motivation. In addition, the ease of use and sense of presence while using the learning environment are rated as high. We contribute to theory by shedding new light on learners’ motivation and performance within work-process-oriented interactive 360-degree learning environments. Furthermore, we offer guidelines for developing interactive 360-degree learning environments against the background of the current metaverse discussion.

  • A Script for Conversational Reflection Guidance: A Field Study on
           Developing Reflection Competence With Apprentices

      Abstract: We present a script for conversational reflection guidance embedded in reflective practice. Rebo Junior, a nonadaptive conversational agent, was evaluated in a 12-week field study with apprentices. We analyzed apprentices’ interactions with Rebo Junior in terms of reflectivity and measured the development of their reflection competence via reflective essays at three points in time during the field study. Reflection competence, a key competency for lifelong professional learning, becomes significantly higher by the third essay after repeated interactions with Rebo Junior (paired samples t-test t13 = 3.00, p = 0.010 from Essay 1 to Essay 3). However, we also observed a significant decrease in reflectivity in the Rebo Junior interactions over time (paired samples t-test between the first and eighth interaction: t7 = 2.50, p = 0.041). We attribute this decline to 1) the novelty of Rebo Junior wearing off (novelty effect) and 2) the apprentices learning the script and experiencing subsequent frustration due to the script not fading over time. Overall, this work 1) informs future design through the observation of consistent decreases in engagement over eight interactions with static scaffolding, 2) contributes a reflection script applicable for reflection on tasks that resemble future expected work tasks, a typical setting in lifelong professional learning, and 3) indicates increased reflection competence after repeated reflection guided by a conversational agent.

      Abstract: Self-reflection and reflective writing have been pivotal for developing a deep understanding of concepts and fostering professional competency in learners. The confluence of the importance of reflective practices within the educational curriculum and the increased proliferation of technology have resulted in numerous studies of how to use automated approaches to analyze broad themes of reflection exhibited by learners in higher educational settings. However, there is a dearth of research in the context of automated analysis of reflective writing demonstrated by professionals within workplace learning. Building on a four-level reflective content analysis model, this article evaluates the depth of reflection exhibited by learners within a professional development MOOC using an automated assessment classifier. Our results identify the varying association of linguistic features across these different levels of reflection. The proposed approach can effectively support the deployment at scale of the labor-intensive evaluation of reflective writing by highly trained professionals.

  • Evolutionary Clustering of Apprentices' Self- Regulated Learning
           Behavior in Learning Journals

      Abstract: Learning journals are increasingly used in vocational education to foster self-regulated learning and reflective learning practices. However, for many apprentices, documenting working experiences is a difficult task. In this article, we profile apprentices' learning behavior in an online learning journal. Based on a pedagogical framework, we propose a novel multistep clustering pipeline that integrates different learning dimensions into a combined profile. Specifically, the profiles are described in terms of effort, consistency, regularity, help-seeking behavior, and quality of the written entries. Our results on two populations of chef apprentices (183 apprentices) interacting with an online learning journal (over 121K entries) show that our pipeline captures changes in learning patterns over time and yields interpretable profiles that can be related to academic performance. The obtained profiles can be used as a basis for personalized interventions, with the ultimate goal of improving the apprentices' learning experience.

      Abstract: Computer science pedagogy, especially in the higher education and vocational training context, has long-favored the hands-on practice provided by programming tasks due to the belief that this leads to better performance on hands-on tasks at work. This assumption, however, has not been experimentally tested against other modes of engagement such as worked example-based reflection. While theory suggests that example-based reflection could be better for conceptual learning, the concern is that the lack of practice will leave students unable to implement the learned concepts in practice, thus leaving them unprepared for work. In this article, therefore, we experimentally contrast programming practice with example-based reflection to observe their differential impact on conceptual learning and performance on a hands-on task in the context of a collaborative programming project. The industry paradigm of Mob Programming, adapted for use in an online and instructional context, is used to structure the collaboration. Keeping with the prevailing view held in pedagogy, we hypothesize that example-based reflection will lead to better conceptual learning but will be detrimental to hands-on task performance. Results support that reflection leads to conceptual learning. Additionally, however, reflection does not pose an impediment to hands-on task performance. We discuss possible explanations for this effect, thus providing an improved understanding of prior theory in this new computer science education context. We also discuss implications for the pedagogy of software engineering education, in light of this new evidence, that impacts student learning as well as work performance in the future.

      Abstract: The widespread adoption of digital tools for learning enables extensive data collection about employee learning activities. This article analyzes how corporations use data to inform and support their learning needs. This article presents a qualitative analysis of what managers and executives overseeing learning and development initiatives in their respective organization's value in learning analytics (LA) at the workplace. The interviews were analyzed through a framework that combined lenses of value-sensitive design and value creation to uncover the values underpinning current applications of LA in the corporate sector. We found that corporations vary in their strategic LA orientations when it comes to organizational learning and development. However, although aspirational narratives of executives are diverse, their activities are not. The implications of the rich qualitative findings suggest that learning sciences can support organizational learning by creating diagnostic tools to identify organizational orientations for LA. Computer scientists can also support decision-making and research on corporate LA by creating tools that can help map organizational aspirations and activities in relation to the various data sources, stemming from different organizational units. We conclude by outlining these recommendations.

      Abstract: Technology-enhanced learning solutions carry the potential for transforming teacher learning and the delivery of professional development activities. This article proposes that the tools that professionals use in their practice can be considered an important mediator for professional learning. We carried out three design experiments, the results of which were used to formulate the conceptual design of a digital learning ecosystem for fostering teachers’ professional learning, which is operationalized through different phases, namely competency-based planning of professional development, designing pedagogical practices, enactment of student-centered learning enriched with technology, and reflection upon own practice to plan comprehensively for competency-based professional development.

  • Framing Professional Learning Analytics as Reframing Oneself

      Abstract: Central to imagining the future of technology-enhanced professional learning is the question of how data are gathered, analyzed, and fed back to stakeholders. The field of learning analytics (LA) has emerged over the last decade at the intersection of data science, learning sciences, human-centered and instructional design, and organizational change, and so could in principle inform how data can be gathered and analyzed in ways that support professional learning. However, in contrast to formal education where most research in LA has been conducted, much work-integrated learning is experiential, social, situated, and practice-bound. Supporting such learning exposes a significant weakness in LA research, and to make sense of this gap, this article proposes an adaptation of the Knowledge-Agency Window framework. It draws attention to how different forms of professional learning locate on the dimensions of learner agency and knowledge creation. Specifically, we argue that the concept of “reframing oneself” holds particular relevance for informal, work-integrated learning. To illustrate how this insight translates into LA design for professionals, three examples are provided: first, analyzing personal and team skills profiles (skills analytics); second, making sense of challenging workplace experiences (reflective writing analytics); and third, reflecting on orientation to learning (dispositional analytics). We foreground professional agency as a key requirement for such techniques to be used effectively and ethically.
