  • Paradossi dell’acqua. Un dialogo tra opposti

    • Authors: Fabio Di Carlo, Carlo Peraboni
      Pages: 7 - 27
Abstract: This issue of Ri-Vista reflects on the inseparable link between forms of water and landscapes and on the meanings that this relation assumes in the design, both when it is explicit or implicit. It investigates the paradoxes of water and analyses the different attitudes, both on conceptual and technical levels. Moving from the different interpretative points of view hosted in this issue, we have chosen to present in this editorial two interrelated and complementary reflections about the opposite effects generated by increasingly recurrent climatic phenomena. The different contributions present a dialectic of opposites, often insufficiently investigated and sometimes inevitably ambiguous, which involves a continuous change of perspective in the reader. Following this "fluid" path, we met floods and storms as much as the drying up of the countryside and growing droughts. But these are the paradoxes of water and we think that today landscape design expresses entirely this duality. With this issue of Ri-Vista we collected experiences, projects and reflections that illustrate the propulsive role of water in the construction of contemporaneity. It is divided into 4 sections called: Narratives; Water territories, identity and contexts; Landscapes for water; Waters for living. They present the different strategies we can use in the management of water and how they become central, even when these are complementary to the different project aims.

  • Se tutto ciò ha un senso

    • Authors: Fabio Di Carlo, Franco Zagari
      Pages: 28 - 31

Progettare paesaggi
           fluviali urbani

    • Authors: Antonella Valentini
      Pages: 34 - 49
Abstract: Water in its many forms has always fascinated designers for its ductility and ability to create innumerable landscapes, as variable as its own drops which, according to recent studies, are no longer as identical as we have thought up to now. Paraphrasing Susan and Geoffrey Jellicoe, this article “deals with the poetry of water in the making of landscape and architecture” (Jellicoe, 1971, p. 9). It is just to define that “poetry of water” that we reflect, obviously without the pretension of imitating the great masters, with particular attention to the urban context. We reflect on the changing and dynamic nature of river landscapes and its transversal pulsating depth which is of relationships with the urban texture; on the need of a network, imagined as two-colored (green and blue); on the importance to read the traces and reinterpreting them in a poetic key, making water emerge as an active component within the urban body. These are only some suggestions, such as notes in the designer’s notebook for a landscape-oriented project for the urban river landscapes.

  • Per un’estetica dei ‘piedi grandi’

    • Authors: Wei Chen, Kongjian Yu
      Pages: 50 - 65
Abstract: The design research conducted by Turenscape Group, where water has become the dominant principle for constructing contemporary sustainable landscapes, effectively exemplifies the complexity and duality of the relationship between water resources and landscape design. It also embodies the dialectic between aesthetic meanings and functional characteristics, constantly evolving within cultures and eras. The current climate crisis urges the pursuit of new aesthetics of water that can reveal a deeper meaning of beauty. Through a dialogue with Professor Kongjian Yu from Peking University, the leader of Turenscape Group, this article aims to explore the references, visions, methodologies, and some results of their design experiments. By reviewing the Chinese agricultural tradition and paying attention to various climates, they propose an innovative interpretation of the city to overbear the challenges of urban water management and the restoration of aquatic ecosystems. The theoretical reflection translates into a design approach that interprets diverse geographical and climatic conditions, primarily focusing on ecosystem interactions within the design.

  • River-phone conversations

    • Authors: Sara Gangemi, Antonio Rovaldi
      Pages: 66 - 79
Abstract: The most recent climatic events have highlighted the urgency of pondering on Po irrigated territory, this time considering the growing risk scenarios associated with them. Through a conversation between two voices, a landscape architect and an artist, and more generally, the literature and the art, this paper tries to frame an alternative perspective of this territory. Some thoughts open up to possible evolution scenarios, which deal with the idea of the ‘wild’, the relationship between soil and water, and the public space for the new communities that live there.

           tradizione cinese

    • Authors: Giovanni Gamberi
      Pages: 80 - 93
Abstract: Current Chinese policies consider tradition as the starting point for a new Chinese Renaissance. To meet contemporary, political and ecological needs, China rediscovers the millenary aesthetic of water and landscape, starting from its renowned philosophers, artists and gardens designers. Water’s central role in culture spans philosophical, religious and artistical fields. Since the origin of Chinese culture, renowned philosophers have associated water flow to the perfect political and moral vision. The wiseman considers water as the excellent behavioral model, in harmony with natural principles; water is indeed the mean to reach the Dao. In China, since the first studies on landscape painting, water has perfectly blended with the aesthetic vision of the landscape, becoming an integral part of it. Water exists in relation to its flowing and to its surroundings, becoming part of the landscape, not as a separated, independent element, but as a fundamental constituent.

  • Il paesaggio è anfibio. Per un nuovo immaginario idrologico

    • Authors: Annalisa Metta
      Pages: 96 - 109
ABSTRCT ENG Dealing with water as a field of design asks for making practices of gaze and conceptualization – of ideas, graphics, and spaces – to verify and renovate many taxonomies we usually consider for setting the shapes, states, and behaviours of this substance. The following paper ponders the chance to question the parting between water and land, and to consider landscape as an unescapable amphibious condition, looking for clues both in the research of Anuradha Mathur and Dilip da Cuhna and in the projects of some iconic sites of the monumental heritage in Rome. Even though they are so far, for geographical and temporal belonging, the two references converge toward destabilizing some granted ideas – such as, the existence of rivers, the separation between rives and cities, or between buildings and open spaces – giving evidence that landscape is the domain of wetness with different concentration and that we need to update our current hydrological imaginary to make it able to generate new conceiving and operating tools, useful to landscape design.

  • Acqua da coltivare. Risorsa, strumento e rito dell’abitare il
           paesaggio mediterraneo

    • Authors: Adriano Dessì, Francesco Marras
      Pages: 110 - 123
Abstract: Walafrid Strabo's Hortulus, a treaty on agriculture written in the 6th century AD, refers techniques and practices for drainage and irrigation of fields nowadays at the centre of discussion (Zoppi, 1995). The theme is particularly critical when compared with the invasiveness of many contemporary systems. The topic of water management represents a feature of human experience on earth since its appearance. It is also one of the most continuous – perhaps the most necessary – tools in landscape construction. While innovating over time, water techniques maintain codes, customs, even rituals, according to constant and apparently opposite principles of rationality and imageability. Reason and figure, utility and symbol, survival and myth lead the construction of the human settlement around water and this contribution tries to outline some of its features especially as regards the "immenso deposito di fatiche" (Cattaneo, 1868) constituted by Mediterranean agricultural landscape and its inhabiting forms. If, on the one hand, a complex and heterogeneous picture can emerge in the experiences described, on the other the essay tries to retrace a coherent path. Finally, this tries to provide a perspective that is still possible for a landscape society, the Mediterranean one, in which living and cultivating water do not belong only to a necessity but to a real and inescapable identity.

           Earth'

    • Authors: Samaneh Sadat Nickayin
      Pages: 124 - 141
Abstract: Iceland is a geologically active land and home to some of the world’s most active volcanoes and the largest glaciers in Europe. Due to its harsh environmental circumstances, its inhabitants’ living conditions are unpredictable. Icelanders live in a sort of ‘rescue mood’, ready to face a variety of natural disasters, such as avalanches, flooding, heavy storms, eruptions, landslides and earthquakes. In this northern sea island, water is the most influential element in culture, language, economy, leisure, landscape, planning strategy, and islanders’ everyday life. Water comes in all forms, both as a provider and a threat. Based on this premise, this commentary is a synthesis image of the forms of water from an outlander point of view, reading an alien landscape in which the forms of water are one of the most enchanting interpretation experiences in the landscape. This anecdote is a narration of the forms of water concerning urbanisation, land and human in different subtle layers of Icelandic culture, economy and landscape design

  • River basin flood adaptation for coastal urban slums. Mithi river basin,
           Dharavi slum

    • Authors: Anubhav Goyal, Sérgio Barreiros Proença , Maria Matos Silva
      Pages: 142 - 153
Abstract: Urban slums in developing countries host a substantial proportion of the urban population. Slums are located on land usually unsuitable for formal development, along the river basins or coastal mangroves that makes them at a greater risk of flooding. River basins face a continuous conflict between mushrooming slums and environmental needs being most vulnerable to changing water levels, plays a significant landscape infrastructure in building flood resilience and provides for spatial interplay between floods and measures of adaptation. The paper investigates how this physical space can be turned into an adaptive interplay to address floods in coastal slums. The methodology involves observation and interpretation from reality. Dharavi slum is assessed to develop a landscape typological framework of flood adaptation set in the parameters based on the functions in different zones that demonstrates the role of river basins towards the integrated approach for flood adaptation in urban slums.

           di Tusa

    • Authors: Sebastiano D'urso, Salvatore Leanza, Grazia Maria Nicolosi
      Pages: 154 - 169
Abstract: The proposed reflections are based on the awareness of ‘being water’ and the consequences that this entails. The grapheme Æ in the title links the two words ‘absence’ and ‘essence’, both representing the concepts used here to observe a reality informed by water: the works created by Antonio Presti for the Fiumara d’Arte in Sicily. Absence as action, creation and wait; and essence as travel, catharsis and rebirth. The importance of ‘being water’ is explained by the water paradox of which essence is shown by the encounter between art and nature, and even its absence.

    • Authors: Luca Filippi
      Pages: 172 - 185
Abstract: Moving from the working hypothesis of reading the water infrastructure as a fundamental support for territorial construction (Viganò, Secchi, Fabian, 2016), the following essay proposes an original perspective and some new analytical and conceptual operations to deal with this research theme. This aim is carried out by using a design experience based on a very specific case study: a territory that can be defined through the image, proposed by Piero Bevilacqua (1989), of the irrigation oasis, an irrigation districit with specialized agriculture characterized es by the relationship with the Apennine mountain and with the torrential regime of its water bodies. By translating this image into a specific ecological structure – produced by a close relation between surface and underground forms of water, thickness and rationality of the soil, forms and structures of agricultural property – the essay proposes an original reading of a contemporary territory designed by water.

  • Paesaggi delle bonifiche. Formazione e trasformazione del bacino fluviale
           del Tronto

    • Authors: Luigi Coccia
      Pages: 186 - 203

  • Landscapes of drought. Future scenarios between agriculture and land
           aptitudes

    • Authors: Gianni Lobosco, Lorenzo Tinti, Beatrice Magagnoli
      Pages: 218 - 237
Abstract: The impact of climate change on agriculture and the future rural landscape is strictly related to the need to improve resilience to water stress. In this context, the main problems are the increase in droughts and the intensification of rainfall events. The objective of the research project, car-ried out in the territory of the Reclamation Consortium of Ferrara, is to manage them through a consistent selection of less productive agricultural areas and their transformation into new habitats capable of storing water and releasing it during drought periods. To identify the project are-as, a method was developed based on the analysis of soil productivity through the processing of satellite images. The proposed system, capable of meeting up to 38-80% of water needs by 2040, is both a tool to support current adaptation policies and a long-term vision towards new spatial configurations of the rural landscape.

  • Forme d’acqua e codici dell’abitare

    • Authors: Maria Livia Olivetti
      Pages: 240 - 251
Abstract: Water in Palermo holds the city in check; it is its main front to the East being the sea. It closes its expansion towards the West with the rivers, streams and springs that flow from the Panormitani mountains. The constant presence of the wind keeps it free of fog, but it cannot dampen the dense and incessant presence of water in the air in the form of humidity. Over the centuries, those who have inhabited the city have had to come to terms with this anwieldy presence, which has been a source of joy in shaping the Conca d'Oro. It is as incredibly fertile today as it was then, and of despair at the flooding of the Kemonia and the marshy stagnation in the Mondello area. The continuous negotiation (which shows no sign of dying out) with water has determined ways of inhabiting the city and induced behaviours within the urban space that are decisive for the quality of life in Palermo. They are much more resilient than the illicit and erroneous management of these forms of water that has taken place over the last 70 years. The cases of the districts of Danisinni and Villagrazia represent some examples from which it is possible to draw strategies and useful elements for the design of urban scenarios in cities in which water has many different forms, from the most evident to the most hidden.

    • Authors: Matteo Aimini
      Pages: 252 - 270
Abstract: The research entitled Flood Risk Management Prevention, Adaptation and Resilient Strategies in Ho Chi Minh city, the partial outcomes of which are presented in this text, is framed within the Projects of Great International Relevance of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation for the consolidation of bilateral relations between Italy and Vietnam. The University of Trento, the IUAV University of Venice and the Vietnam National University are working together to propose alternative landscape and hydraulic scenarios to face the challenges posed by the excessive anthropic load and climate change that squeeze and weaken the river landscape of the metropolis, not allowing the fragile lacustrine territories to breathe adequately.

  • The regeneration of watercourses within urbanized areas. Some
considerations about relevance, strategies, and design tools

    • Authors: Paola Sabbion
      Pages: 272 - 288
Abstract: Water is an essential element in landscape design. Dealing with it, with its presence or absence and knowing how to manage its different forms can guide to shape unique and significant places, but above all it is necessary in order to improve the ecological conditions in the area. Waterways, in particular, are among the most diverse and complex ecosystems on earth, characterized by dynamic processes. The restoration of rivers and streams has proven itself an effective strategy for the recovery and redevelopment of environmental conditions in different context and at different scales of intervention. The regeneration of extensive riverine areas both in urban and peri-urban contexts can help to transform climate crisis issues into opportunities to integrate multiple benefits such as biodiversity, flood protection, public spaces, and sustainable mobility through the implementation of a series of fundamental strategies and design tools.

  • Aguapuntura: a water-sensitive approach to revitalize informal settlements
in the city of Asunción, Paraguay

    • Authors: Luca Rossignoli, Sara Favargiotti, Alessandra Marzadri
      Pages: 290 - 303
Abstract: In the last decades, rapid urban development led to the birth of informal working-class neighbourhoods. This phenomenon refers particularly to big cities of the developing world, where the slum’s expansion is uncontrolled and has caused a lack of basic services, drinking water and adequate sanitation facilities, generating open sewers, pollution and landslides due to runoff. The present research, focused on the Chacarita district of Asunción (Paraguay), proposes a multiscalar strategy to manage the water resource, address environmental risk and urban and landscape redevelopment. The study proposes the regeneration of public spaces in one of the sectors that compose the Chacarita Alta neighborhood. The proposed design strategies aim at enhancing its natural and urban heritage through punctual interventions on water involving its collection, purification and reuse. Results underline the potential of the designed prototypes in improving the living conditions of the Chacarita residents.

    • Authors: Mariella Zoppi
      Pages: 306 - 316
Abstract: According to Gianfranco Di Pietro, the landscape is the essential dimension to understand the land morphology and development of a territory towards planning its future. His perspective on the landscape is “the summary and synthetic dimension" in which we can read the structure of a site: geology and morphology, settlement system, agro-forestry structures. All aspects are, always, related and investigated by interlinking historical-archival sources with field observations and economic dynamics. This research method – combined with his technical capacity in planning – allows for towns and country plans to steer the development of regions towards the attainment of a sustainable future with respect to cultural and natural heritage conservation and protection.
