  • Zurcidos, Pliegues, Discontinuidades.

The defence system of Santiago de Cuba was configured around the colonial city with a wire-fence joining the fortresses along its perimeter. This system evolved into the Ring of the old city, joining four different sectors - Alameda, Martí, Libertadores and Trocha - in response to projects or processes of consolidation across the time. This Ring, the city’s point of articulation, was the place where Santiago’s principal public spaces and facilities were inserted; it was recognized as a structure of high significance for its heritage values, tangible as well as intangible, while it also provided the place where the main activities of popular culture found expression. This study endeavours to analyse the historical process of the Ring’s evolution and its urban characteristics, with a view to evaluating its significance in the urban context. It permits a definition of the Ring’s heritage values, to serve as a strategy of darning with the aim of eliminating the discontinuities which have arisen through the city’s consolidation process.

The significance of the civic and political character of Santiago de Cuba’s Céspedes Park - the former Plaza de Armas -is undeniable. A diachronic study of this space suggests areadingwhich changes little across time, hencetheimportance of theconstruction ofthe city’s Municipal Palace in 1954 and its impact on collective memory. This investigation isbased on an analysis of the Plaza de Armas, its origins, its urban image and the design projects for the Palace from 1738 to 1951,based on iconographic material derived fromprimary sources. The analysisdemonstratedthat Santiago de Cuba’s Plaza de Armas has always been a multifunctional space identified in the local imaginary with the cathedral, during the colonial era and until the Municipal Palace was built, in 1954. Today, this area reflects a synthesis of the urban space where tradition and modernity coexist, and where the Palace stands as a symbol of Cuban identity, representing a new collective memory of Santiago.

The settlement of Puerto de Boniato, in the region of Santiago de Cuba, presents a scenic site. Yet, in recent years the area’s environmental qualities have deteriorated, especially those of its natural landscape, something which has affected the quality of life of the inhabitants as well as the influx of tourists to the existing recreation center. This study is based on a diagnosis and evaluation ofthe area’s environmental qualities and the potential of its rural landscape for tourism, with a view to proposing a strategy for sustainable environmental management. It draws up a preliminary proposal for the environmental management of the settlement concerned and its surroundings. The preliminary design scheme proposed here has been based on a consideration of the concepts of environment, sustainability and environmental quality, with the aim of improving the quality of life of the settlement’s rural inhabitants.

This article discusses the different visions embodied in two post-natural-disaster reconstruction processes, under different historical and political circumstances. It offers a comparative study of the impact and recovery processes following the two most significant natural disasters suffered by the city of Santiago de Cuba: the earthquake of 1932 and the hurricane Sandy of 2012. It analyses the data and registers compiled in both cases, and presents a synthesis of the particularities of the dwellings which collapsed, in terms of construction techniques. This discussion sheds light on the relative successes and failures in each of the two historical moments. It concludes that, under current conditions, the challenge presented consists in understanding the social achievements. Furthermore, this particular focus permits a consideration of the city’s heritage values.

This text discusses sustainability in architecture and its relation to vernacular building techniques, i. e., how adaptation and invention marked the creation of some of the first places of worship of the Chilean evangelical church. An analytical method was adopted for the study of how the temples were designed and built, and a mixed inductive-deductive method was employed for the identification of key practices that made possible low-power consumption and a minimal impact on the environment. Two main practices were identified. The first one consists in the reuse of buildings, structures, materials, furniture and typologies (adaptation). The second practice involves the creation ex nihilo of solutions for load-bearing structures, construction details and modes of financing (invention). Having demonstrated the sustainable qualities of the temples’ construction, in the early twentieth century, and with the certainty that such techniques are perfectly feasible today, this paper concludes that the impediment to sustainable construction today is ethical - not technical.

The compilation of data inventories regarding the distribution, composition, availability and structure of the variety of trees species in a certain urban area constitutes a necessary stage in urban forestry management. Havana’s El Vedado has been historically characterized by its tree-lined streets. However, the current quantitative and qualitative deficiencies of its tree species affect significantly the urban image of the area and the well-being of its inhabitants, while also restricting the benefits provided by the trees and increasing their vulnerability. This paper presents a report of the first results of a spatial database of El Vedado’s tree-lined streets, created through meticulous identification of tree species and the spaces where they belong. The data collected include information on basic aspects such as tree composition, density, size, growth performance and limitations. This type of study may prove very useful in helping to identify the characteristics that maybe used to select tree species better suited for landscape design in urban areas of Cuba.

The aim of this paper is to present a panoramic view of the impact of climate change on the Cuban Southeast. It discusses the principal threats and risks affecting coastal areas, and describes the most recent and pertinent results of scientific research carried out with the aim of tackling climate change in such areas. Programmes that have been adopted in order to identify and implement solutions regarding Integrated Coastal Zone Management and the management of human settlements are also presented. Such programmes aim to reduce vulnerabilities resulting from serious natural threats, progressive sea-level rise or from the effects observed through models of upwelling in the case of hurricanes of different categories. This paper concludes that climatic change in the Cuban Southeast is a process beyond doubt, and it is currently being confronted as a matter of priority; more than ten programmes have already been put in action, involving various collaborating institutions.

This review presents the author’s personal reflections on observed trends in Latin American architecture and urbanism, during the last two decades. It departs from a premise of unity in variety, observed across the continent as the primary factor which conditions its built environment and the two predominant types of architecture. Subsequently, it discusses the current situation of those Latin American cities which are the planet’s most urbanized and violent, with a view to defining, classifying and reflecting upon the principal trends in contemporary Latin American architecture and urbanism, exemplified through selected works from various countries. The paper intends to organize, systematize and interpret the aforementioned architectural and urban phenomena in order to facilitate access to this disperse and at times unpublished information, especially for undergraduate students, but also for professionals and the general public.

This article responds to the need to develop the cognitive independence of students of architecture, as a way to guarantee competence in the performance of their social and professional tasks after graduation. It presents the primary concepts which enabled the author to propose a methodological structure for the first topic of the module entitled Advanced and Traditional Prefabrication. Subsequently, the article describes the organization and sequencing of the students’ learning process, from the consultation of the pertinent literature to the tackling of specific assignments, designed with a focus on real-professional-life problems and requiring students to mobilize cognitive resources which favour autonomy in the mastery of new content and responsibility in the construction of knowledge.
