  • Frem ting vi lærte af coronakrisen

    • Authors: Thomas Bloch Ravn
      Pages: 6 - 6
      Abstract: Crisis leads to insights
The Corona crisis has seriously affected Den Gamle By and many
other cultural institutions, but the crisis has also given us new insights. Den Gamle By was perhaps no stranger to them before, but
they may well end up influencing Den Gamle By’s way of being a
museum in the years ahead. This editorial points to five insights. It
is a position of strength that Den Gamle By is an immersive experience where the visitors can see, smell, taste and experience history.
It is a unique selling point that visitors can meet real people and engage in dialogue with them. A memorable museum experience involves social spaces where visitors can come together. It is striking
that it is the best-loved museums that have been hit hardest by the
crisis. This suggests that the public authorities ought to take a higher degree of responsibility for the financing of the popular but vulnerable museums

  • Årsberetning for Dansk Center for byhistorie

    • Authors: Mikkel Thelle
      Pages: 6 - 6
Abstract: Danish Centre for Urban History 2021
The Centre for Urban History began a new book project in 2021:
“Danish Towns 1550-1850” has received generous support from the
Augustinus Foundation and the Aage and Johanne Louis-Hansen
Foundation and will offer an historical overview of all Danish towns
in the early modern period. It is the second volume in the Centre’s
series about the history of Danish towns. The research centre remains focused on the city and the urban environment with two projects relating to transformations of urban life in the 20th century: a project on urban water and water consumption and another on the dependency on high levels of energy consumption based on fossil fuels. We are also involved in a new project that seeks to explore the hidden heritage of Danish house plants brought from the Cape,
South Africa, in the 19th century and gradually adopted into Danish bourgeois and middle-class homes. Covid-19 continued to be a challenge for the research centre throughout 2021, but also gave us an opportunity to take a new look at how urban life has responded to epidemics throughout history. The work on historical soundscapes
and on the medieval infrastructure has continued and results have been published in 2021, as well as a book on Danish tourism in a historical perspective. International cooperation with other Centres of Urban History in Antwerp, Leicester and Paris is progressing, with mutual exchanges, educational initiatives and publications.

Abstract: Wooden scaffolding in Den Gamle By
Until the middle of the 20th century scaffolding was made of wood rather than iron and aluminium as we see it today. Trying to maintain the illusion of an old market town, the craftsmen in Den Gamle By have recently started to build scaffolding in wood more and more often.
The primary reason for using wooden scaffolding is the look of historical accuracy, but the craftsmen have been aware of many other great advantages that modern iron scaffolding does not have. For instance, you can customize the wooden scaffolding to a greater extent, which is very convenient in a museum like Den Gamle By, where the houses are all crooked and the streets are bumpy and sometimes narrow.
Another benefit is that these wooden scaffolds show part of the process of how houses were built back in time – a recurring theme we try to bring out in many other exhibitions at the museum. Obviously this insight into process leads to curiosity and interest from many visitors to the museum.
Over the next years we will be building a lot more wooden scaffolding in Den Gamle By, as many of the old houses need restoration. Often the scaffolding will be an invitation to see an interesting building site and perhaps an opportunity for a chat with the craftsmen about the process of building houses as it was done in the past.

    • Authors: Kitt Boding-Jensen
      Pages: 8 - 8
      Abstract: New times, new possibilities
Besides its core function as a museum, Den Gamle By also often provides a setting for birthdays, receptions and meetings – in the future, we hope, on a much larger scale. The newly established Department for Sales and Event Hosting has just been launched, so more guests can appreciate the potential of Den Gamle By for holding events in historical surroundings that will long be remembered.
The article gives among other things examples from an international conference, a football match and a Golden Wedding.

      Abstract: Museum for Editorial Cartoons
The Museum for Editorial Cartoons was founded in 1995 on the initiative of Claus Seidel, who himself produces theatrical and courtroom drawings. The Museum was inaugurated at the Royal Library by HM Queen Margrethe on 7th October 2000.
Since 2017 the Museum for Editorial Cartoons has been unable to mount exhibitions at the Royal Library, and that is why the Museum has been on the lookout for a new home. The choice fell on Den Gamle By, both because it has had great experience of integrating other museums within its ambit and because the Museum for Editorial Cartoons and the Museum of Posters are able to operate in parallel tracks where they can strengthen and supplement each other.
The Museum for Editorial Cartoons features drawings and other material from more than 225 Danish newspaper cartoonists and includes about 300,000 cartoons. This makes the museum the biggest collection of original art on paper in Europe. The drawings include political cartoons, courtroom drawings, caricatures, theatrical drawings, reportage drawings, vignettes, amusing cartoons, satirical drawings and comic drawings or comic strips,
as they are also called. The main emphasis is on drawings from 1930-1990, but the collection features work going all the way back to the mid-19th century and up until today.

  • Ny hovedindgang på vej

    • Authors: Niels Meyer
      Pages: 8 - 8
      Abstract: New and old meet
Den Gamle By is having a new main entrance built south of the museum and with a facade out towards the city of Aarhus. In 2018 the architectural firm Cubo won an architectural competition with a proposal which fully met the requirements of Den Gamle By for visibility, good functionality and and a strong architectural concept. The
building will also be an invitation to a journey through time that begins in the present and leads on into the ‘neighbourhoods’ of Den Gamle By, which go back stepwise in time.

  • Gæstgivergården er inspireret af gamle dage

    • Authors: Niels Meyer, Steven Farup Revsholm
      Pages: 10 - 10
      Abstract: New restaurant
Since 2016, Den Gamle By has been working on the new restaurant, Gæstgivergården. With the exception of one courtyard, which will be completed in 2022, the new establishment was inaugurated in the summer of 2021. The purpose of the new restaurant is to make sufficient space for the museum’s growing number of visitors and events whilst also offering a unique dining experience – aesthetic as
      well as culinary.
With a wide range of spatial expressions, the various indoor and outdoor areas have all been given distinct identities, inspired by both historical and contemporary places, with clear and deliberate contrasts among them. This, coupled with a renewed focus on serving a seasonal selection of classic Danish dishes made from scratch with a modern twist, will make for varied dining and event experiences for users of Den Gamle By for many years to come

  • Tal og fakta

    • Authors: Thomas Bloch Ravn
      Pages: 15 - 15

    • Authors: Thomas Bloch Ravn
      Pages: 24 - 24
      Abstract: New initiatives
In the middle of the Covid crisis in December 2020, it was a great encouragement that the Folketing decided to prolong a provisional grant to Den Gamle By for another four-year period. We are also grateful that the scope of the grant was expanded so that it could fund Den Gamle By’s takeover of an extraordinary collection of editorial cartoons from the Royal Library in Copenhagen. On December 25th Den Gamle By had to close down because of the Covid crisis.
On April the 21st of 2021, the museum reopened to a very limited number of visitors. In August the numbers had reached around 85 percent of a normal year, and now we are convinced that Den Gamle By will manage to continue, although on a smaller scale than in
previous years. During the crisis, new initiatives have been taken combining better visitor experiences with extra sources of earning for Den Gamle By, and we trust that these initiatives will provide a stronger economic basis for the museum in the future
