Abstract: Sustainable public procurement is a significant public policy towards sustainable development. In this context, this study investigated the public agents’ commitment to the procurement process within Brazilian public institutions regarding the implementation of sustainable public procurement and their perceptions of organizational and political commitment to the issue. A nationwide quantitative survey was conducted with 201 participants in the planning, selection, or execution phases of public procurement. The findings reveal that individual commitment to sustainable public procurement is moderate, while organizational and political commitment is low or nonexistent. Increased knowledge among public agents and the availability of organizational resources are identified as key factors that could enhance commitment to sustainable public procurement. The results have significant social implications, promoting more sustainable practices in the public sector and supporting responsible development aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This article is original in addressing sustainable public procurement from the public policy implementation perspective and the individuals’ viewpoint regarding individual, organizational, and political commitment to the issue, providing a deeper understanding of the variables that interfere with the implementation of this policy. Abstract: Japan’s aging population and declining birth rate presents increasing financial strain on its public pension system. Cultural values such as filial piety (oyakoko) and lifelong employment traditions have historically shaped Japan’s pension system but now present challenges as modernization shifts elder care responsibilities from families to the state. This paper examines how demographic shifts affect social welfare and assesses policy measures to ensure long-term financial stability. Taking a qualitative interpretivist approach, secondary data was collected and analyzed using Braun and Clarke’s thematic framework. Findings highlight low worker contributions, high dependency ratios, and a growing imbalance between inflows and outflows in the pension system. To address these challenges, proposed reforms include investing in stocks, raising the retirement age, and implementing structured savings plans. Lessons from Sweden and Germany suggest that adapting international models to Japan’s unique demographic and cultural context is essential. PubDate: Sat, 17 May 2025 08:09:37 +000
Abstract: The study aimed to describe the influence of different planting spacings in aboveground biomass and soil carbon stocks, in 7.5 years old Anadenanthera peregrina (L.) Speg. var. peregrina stands, hypothesizing that smaller spacings might enhance carbon storage. The stands are located in Espírito Santo, Brazil and were planted in 2011. Blocks were allocated in a randomized block design to evaluate three treatments: 3 m x 3 m, 4 m x 4 m and 5 m x 5 m tree spacings. Samples up to 100 cm were taken for carbon determination and soil bulk density. 10 trees were felled and their aboveground biomass measured. Soil and aboveground biomass C stocks were calculated. The aboveground biomass C stock did not change in different spacing. Soil C stock was not influenced by the spacings, with total C stock of 122.93, 106.09 and 97.08 Mg ha-1 for 3 m x 3 m, 4 m x 4 m and 5 m x 5 m, respectively. The intensification of carbon storage in smaller spacings was not confirmed. The study reveals inedited information about carbon storage in A. peregrina var. peregrina stands and demands new investigations regarding different soil characteristics. The species do have potential for carbon storage regardless of tree spacing. PubDate: Tue, 13 May 2025 01:00:18 +000
Abstract: Through recent years, much has been said about the importance of sustainability in corporate strategy, and multinational corporations abiding by the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDG’s). More and more corporations try to integrate sustainability principles, otherwise known as ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) into their marketing, corporate strategy, and business models. There’s often a clash between non-governmental organizations (NGO’s), civil society, governments, and the private sector on what ESG best practices are, with some calling “greenwashing” some environmental-related actions companies are taking. This paper tries to tackle the first question in this challenge: what is sustainability in business' How individuals in different parts of the world are defining sustainability and how that may help corporations better address their ESG strategy to the market needs. The question is addressed using a discrete choice model, to understand the utility functions of sustainability parameters. Those parameters were defined by a meta-analysis of 200 scientific papers on sustainability. The survey for the discrete choice model was made available online, in seven languages, and it was completed by 501 individuals across 41 countries.Among the parameters researched, sustainable development goals adoption, followed by positive economic impact had the highest utility values. The lowest utility values were attributed to donations and racial equality. A disparity between what one would expect from stated preferences is seen in racial equality, as it ranked 4th in terms of preferences. On the same token, donations ranked last, in line with the utility value. PubDate: Sat, 10 May 2025 09:02:12 +000
Abstract: Gamification is an emerging approach that leverages game design elements to influence user behavior across diverse domains, including health, education, and environmental sustainability. This article addresses fundamental yet thought-provoking questions about the effectiveness of gamification in shaping long-term habits. Through a critical synthesis of existing literature, the article explores how gamification fosters behavioral change—such as increased physical activity, reduced stress, and enhanced self-efficacy—and examines the psychological mechanisms behind these effects. It also considers gamification’s adaptability across platforms, its relevance for populations with specific needs (e.g., individuals with ADHD), and its potential for promoting critical thinking rather than superficial engagement. While long-term empirical data remain limited, current applications suggest that gamification holds substantial promise as a tool for cultivating sustainable behaviors. This article offers researchers, educators, and designers a concise, evidence-informed overview of gamification’s potential and limitations in advancing sustainable development goals. Abstract: In many developing countries, women are central to agricultural production and possess valuable, often underutilized, knowledge of crop diversity and local food systems. Despite significant global efforts to address food insecurity and gender inequality, the impact of many well-intentioned initiatives is frequently diminished by local, institutional, and bureaucratic barriers. This article examines a selection of agricultural programs that have demonstrated measurable success in promoting gender equity and improving food security by actively investing in women’s skills, leadership, and economic participation in agribusiness. Through an in-depth analysis of eight such initiatives that prioritize personal development and capacity building, this study identifies key implementation strategies that have contributed to their effectiveness. The findings offer practical guidance for policymakers, development practitioners, and organizations seeking to design future interventions that are contextually grounded, inclusive, and capable of delivering long-term, sustainable outcomes for marginalized communities. Abstract: The wild boar (Sus scrofa), an invasive alien species with high ecological plasticity, has become a global concern due to its environmental, economic, and social impacts. In Brazil, its uncontrolled expansion has triggered complex conflicts involving diverse stakeholders. This study explores the sociotechnical translations of the wild boar using the Actor-Network Theory (ANT), particularly Michel Callon’s Sociology of Translation, to examine how different actors construct and negotiate the species’ meaning and management. Through a qualitative case study approach, we identify how heterogeneous actors—rural producers, hunters, environmental agencies, scientists, and civil society—attribute competing values and roles to the wild boar. The findings reveal that the wild boar transcends its biological classification to become a hybrid actor shaped by dynamic interactions, conflicting interests, and political-ecological narratives. These translations are fluid, contingent, and influenced by power relations, media discourse, cultural perceptions, and institutional responses. The study contributes to a deeper understanding of human–non-human assemblages and the governance of invasive species, underscoring the need for interdisciplinary frameworks that account for environmental sustainability, socioecological complexity, and non-human agency in policy-making processes. Abstract: This study explores how importing shea butter from Burkina Faso and selling it as hand cream in Japan can support the local community, raise awareness of gender inequality, and promote women’s employment. It also examines the role of service learning in enhancing cross-cultural communication by engaging in service learning. Using qualitative and quantitative methods, the study involved a literature review, discussions with BYCS (Bridge, Youth Challenge, and Smile) members, and data analysis on shea butter importation and sales. Survey results and social media campaigns were used to assess awareness. The findings suggest that selling shea butter contributes to job creation in Burkina Faso and raises awareness of gender inequality, with benefits extending to healthcare. However, improvements can be made in marketing strategies and business approaches. The survey also revealed a need for greater awareness-raising efforts. This study highlights the potential of fair trade and service learning to address social issues, with implications for social change and sustainable development. Abstract: With the advent of the industrial revolution, greenhouse gases have been emitted into the atmosphere causing the alteration of weather across the globe. These gases have caused the global temperature to warm. This has also caused a change in precipitation, wind speeds, and wave heights. The Great Lakes have many cities located on their shores and millions of people are affected by waves. Effects include shoreline erosion, infrastructure damage, and loss of valuable property and lives. It is imperative to future planning and engineering that the trends of wave height are understood. This study uses linear regression, a well-known and easily understood method, to analyze all the Great Lakes’ wave heights, moving average, moving standard deviation, and 100-year recurrence value. Nineteen wave buoys were selected for analysis, encompassing all the Great Lakes. It was found that some locations have increasing wave height trends while other locations have decreasing trends. Five stations had positive trends for both storm magnitude and standard deviation. Five stations had one positive and one negative trend. Nine stations had decreasing storm average and standard deviations. The 100-year wave height value is also increasing at 11 stations and decreasing at 8 stations. This goes to show that waves are changing, but in different ways for different station locations. Planners can use this information to plan future erosion and infrastructure activities and budgets. Abstract: The goal of quality of work life is to evaluate how employees perceive their lives inside a company. Lack of quality of work life is linked to greater levels of occupational stress, anxiety, and burnout, leading to poorer job performance and substantial expenses for organizations. Bearing this in mind, the current study was formulated to address the gap in the literature and examine the relationship between architects’ Quality of Work Life and their productivity throughout a case study in Kerman, eastern Iran. To fulfil the objectives of this study, 130 architects working actively and officially in Kerman agreed to participate in the study, who were reached out using the Krejcie, and Morgan’s (1970) table. Two questionnaires in Persian Version were distributed among them, including Quality of work life questionnaire based on Walton model (1973) and the Productivity questionnaire based on the ACHIEVE model, both adopted from Chalabiei (2017). The data was transferred to SPSS Version 27 for further statistical analyses. The results of the Spearman's correlation coefficient test showed that there was a positive correlation between the quality of work life and the architects’ productivity. Also, all the eight components of quality of work life had a positive relationship with the architects’ productivity. Further implications of the study results and suggestions are discussed, accordingly. PubDate: Wed, 09 Apr 2025 03:37:15 +000
Abstract: In architecture, AI can perform many tasks during the architectural design process, so it is necessary to understand this technology and its advantages and disadvantages, especially for those concerned with environmental and sustainable aspects. There are gaps and ambiguities in relation to the effect of using AI in architecture, especially when it comes to the principles of the green architecture, particularly in Iran. Therefore, the current study was formulated to determine the possibility of AI in supporting green architecture design, to determine the possibility of AI in achieving the principles of green architecture, to examine the architects' viewpoints regarding the role of AI in achieving the principles of green architecture by using a questionnaire, and to determine the most common AI programs used by architects the most. To address the research objectives, a questionnaire was adopted, and back-to-back translated, and distributed among 46 architects who worked in Kerman city, Iran. The data was collected during October 2024, and to analyze, SPSS Version 25 was used. The results of the study showed that to a great extent, AI can support green architecture design because majority of the respondents confirmed that AI can give multiple alternatives to environmental treatments and can help the designer make design decisions to achieve the green architecture principles. Overall, it was concluded that AI can achieve principles of green architecture. PubDate: Tue, 08 Apr 2025 04:07:17 +000
Abstract: The application of A. nodosum based seaweed extract can enhance seed quality. However, the positive results regarding the use of this technology remain unclear. This study investigated the impact of different doses of organomineral seaweed-based fertilizer on the seed quality of chickpea and common bean. A completely randomized design was used with four replications, and the treatments consisted of seed treatments with five doses of A. nodosum seaweed extract for chickpea (0, 50, 100, 150, and 200 mL of extract per 100 kg of seeds) and of (0, 125, 250, 375 and 500 mL of extract per 100 kg of seeds) for common bean. After harvest, the seeds were analyzed using the following tests: germination, first count, seedling length, and seedling dry mass. It was concluded that the seed quality of chickpea and common bean was influenced by the addition of A. nodosum seaweed extract. Doses of seaweed extract higher than 100 and 250 mL per 100 kg of seeds negatively affected the physiology of chickpea and bean seeds, respectively. The doses of 100 and 250 mL per 100 kg of seeds resulted in higher-quality seed lots of chickpea and common bean, offering valuable insights for future agricultural practices and the advancement of sustainable, cost-effective production. Abstract: Jambu (Acmella oleracea), also known as Pará cress, is a plant widely used in cuisine and traditional medicine, standing out for causing a tingling sensation in the mouth due to the presence of the compound spilanthol. This research aimed to analyze the effects of inlet temperature on the drying process of Jambu leaf extract using a spray dryer. The experiment was conducted at temperatures of 110°C and 140°C, respectively. The results indicated that the higher temperature (140°C) provided a greater powder yield (40.10%) compared to 110°C (30.94%). Water activity remained below 0.3 in both conditions, indicating microbiological stability. The color of the powder showed no significant variations, maintaining favorable visual characteristics. The bulk density was lower at 140°C (0.22 g.cm-³) compared to 110°C (0.39 g.cm-³). Morphological analysis revealed that higher temperature resulted in more spherical and regular particles. Abstract: Several vulture species are classified as endangered due to their massive global decline in populations. Humans and other species in the ecosystem may suffer because of this decline. Identification of vulture conservation threats, and creation of sustainable wildlife conservation depends on understanding the attitudes and views of local communities. Research on threats, attitudes, and views of local communities towards vulture conservation in Botswana is limited. The current study yields key insights about the perceptions and knowledge of local communities towards vultures in the Manyelanong and Tswapong hills, Botswana which are crucial foraging and breeding habitats for cape vultures Gyps coprotheres. A questionnaire survey was employed, comprising both open-ended and closed-ended questions about respondents’ perceptions of vultures, their knowledge of them, and how frequently they had seen them in their neighbourhoods. The questionnaire was implemented on 120 randomly selected households near the breeding grounds of vultures. Both qualitative and quantitative techniques were used to analyse the data. Some socioeconomic factors, including education level, age, occupation, residence, and favourable attitude towards vultures, showed a significant association. The physical and behavioural traits of the species had an impact on how the locals felt about vultures. Age, education, and participation level of respondents had an impact on their attitudes towards conservation. The ecological significance of vulture species is recognised by communities, who are concerned about their population declines. Therefore, comprehensive awareness-raising campaigns should be encouraged to protect vulture species. PubDate: Sat, 29 Mar 2025 09:20:07 +000
