  • The Social Space of the Uninhabited Lands in Alto Aragón, Spain.
Ethnographic Approach to the Current Occupation Practices as a Factor to
Preserve a Rural Environment of Great Landscaping Value

The current poor preservation conditions of the uninhabited lands in the Huesca Pre-Pyrenees represents an alarming scenery involving the loss of cultural, landscape, architectonic, and social values associated with this territory. The qualitative study of the reoccupation practices provides insights into the motivations by some minority groups to recover these life settings. The results thereof indicate the role of the natural environment when it comes to settle specific uninhabited lands and whether these experiences would eventually become an option for the land autonomy and a suitable option for preservation, even so under the framework of the current space planning provisions.
  • Impact of the Rural Tourism on the Employment in Spain: An Approach at a
           Province Extent

Rural tourism is an activity with growing importance in the rural environment, as it helps to complement the agricultural income and, all the more, to mitigate the depopulation in the rural areas. Rural tourism should be understood both as an economic option for the rural areas and as a strategic drive for the territorial development that, in turn, helps to develop those rural areas with poor economic and social conditions. Therefore, rural tourism is studied as an economic alternative for both the reinvigoration and development of rural areas, by analyzing how this activity impacts the employment in these areas. Variables providing information on three different thematic lines are analyzed: economy, demographics and rural tourism. To carry out the data analysis, this work relies on factor analysis, cluster analysis, and discriminant analysis. It focuses on three factors: tourism-jobs dynamism, tourism-rural dynamism, and quality tourism vs. job-deprived provinces. Based on these three factors the Spanish provinces are then classified in three groups regarding how the rural tourism impacts the employment, which shows an uneven influence depending on the province involved. Asturias is the Spanish province where rural tourism has impacted most positively the employment. On the other hand, the provinces Cádiz, Málaga, Las Palmas and Santa Cruz de Tenerife, despite having a rural tourism driven towards the environmental quality of their protected spaces, do not report a positive impact on the employment.
  • Micro-Finances and Rural Poverty in Mexico: An Analysis Based on
           Propensity Score Matching

This article aims to estimate the effect of using the micro-finances on the poverty, measured as the income per Mexican rural household. By using the information from the Coneval Survey to Mexican Rural Households 2013 (EnChor 2013) as well as the techniques of Propensity Score Matching, the outcomes from this research show that micro-loans help to reduce the poverty levels among the rural households in Mexico. These findings indicate the need to create public policies that will enable to incorporate higher numbers of poor households into the micro-finance market, which would improve the standard of living of the people in those areas.
  • Alternative Local Markets in Mexico and Colombia: Resistance and
           Transformations Regarding the Certification Processes

One of the main difficulties for medium- and small-sized food producers both in Colombia and Mexico is the access to favorable markets. Due to this problem, different actors have produced marketing strategies intended to recover the physical and symbolic spaces expressing both the demands and claims related to the production, distribution and consumption of local food. Based on qualitative research techniques, we studied the mechanisms used by four alternative local markets in these two countries, in order to differentiate their production as well as the subjects involved. The results show the benefits, tensions and challenges stemming from the certification processes.
  • Socio-Ecological Dynamics and Community Ecotourism: A Comparative Analysis
           in the Guayabero-Guaviare River Axis

The effects of the ecotourism in the relationships between inhabitants and their environment are complex and multidimensional. To explore these effects, two community ecotourism initiatives in the Guaviare Province were comparatively analyzed. This territory has been historically affected by the armed conflict and today is given priority as a scenery for the peace construction. The analysis herein articulates approaches both from the political ecology and the socio-ecological systems and considers how important it is to understand the power relations emerging in community ecotourism contexts that, in turn, help to measure how this kind of tourism impacts the socio-ecological dynamics and the strategies by the peasant families who try to diversify their economies to made them sustainable.
  • Analysis of the Production Costs and the Value Chain of Traditional Plants
Grown by Peasants from Cundinamarca Province, Colombia

This article analyses the production costs and the value chain for the traditional plants grown by the Cundinamarca peasants, specifically in the town Chipaque. This way, the work shows the production challenges faced by the peasants due to the tensions between the economism rationality and the alternative rationality. The latter considers the socioeconomic practices together with different forms of valuing the things. This work highlights the heterogenous nature of the peasants as well as the workings of the value chain in the traditional plants production, from the land to the selling place at the town markets in Bogotá, taking into account the dehydration process.
