  • The biopolitics of Artic tourism development and sustainability

    • Authors: Aapo Lunden
Abstract: In recent years, the concept of Arctification has been used to describe how spatial simplifications and strategic essentialisation of Northern Europe have been used for branding in tourism. This article deconstructs the Arctification phenomenon into three main dimensions, (I) exogenous tourism development, (II) territorialisation, and (III) consumptive ethics of planetary care. The article claims, from a biopolitical perspective, that arctified visions of tourism and sustainable tourism in the Arctic can be understood as the production of heterotopic spaces. By engaging with Foucault’s concept of heterotopia as spaces of exception based on deviation (alterity) and compensation (sustainability), the article further claims that it provides a valuable framework for analysing contemporary challenges and paradoxes of sustainability and tourism growth strategies in the Arctic. The article illustrates its main arguments by drawing examples of Arctification from Finnish Lapland.

  • The biopolitical production of tourism areas in Lesotho: the case of
           Bokong Nature Reserve

    • Authors: Itumeleng Mokhele
Abstract: Tourism cuts across all forms of human interaction being their living space, frontiers, socio-economic and cultural aspects. The paper seeks to establish the impact of tourism development on local communities and to assess the effects of biopolitical production of a tourism area at Bokong Nature Reserve in Lesotho. The study is qualitative in nature. Narrative inquiry and in-depth interviews were used to collect data from one village at Ha Lejone, in the Leribe district. Results show that the construction of the tourist site occupies the community land which was used for various purposes. Livestock is captured by the nature reserve management while the traditional school that was located on the site stripped for tourism development was demolished. However, the content analysis of the narrative depicts a little ray of positivity as the narrator states that local communities were trained in making fire belt. It is concluded that tourism as a biopolitical phenomenon deprive local commu...

  • Politização de viagens face à biopolítica: (I)mobilidades, mediações

  • Travel politicization facing biopolitics: (Im)mobilities, technological
mediations, and identity discourses in collaborative hosting networks for

    • Authors: Thaís Costa
Abstract: This paper investigates how the biopolitical representation of travelers is affected by political activism on a collaborative hosting network for Black Brazilian women. The context of the neoliberal capitalist economy influences behaviors and the production of subjectivities that are strongly reinforced by technological and media intermediaries, such as platforms and social networks. In the scenario with tourism emerging as a biopolitical phenomenon, traveling bodies are ranked in a market logic with asymmetrical mobility (Sheller, 2017). The methodological course consisted of a literature review, an ethnography of the women's group Couchsurfing das Pretas hosted on Facebook, and a platform analysis to mediate their interactions. The results indicated a tourism politicization from the intense use of digital platforms and the valuation of identities as a biopotency movement against biopolitics discourses.

  • Sitting for Muße on a city vacation

    • Authors: Clara Sofie Kramer
Abstract: Paris, Jardin des Tuileries, 28.05.2022. Sitting away from the crowd. Image 1000000000000A57000006E0595FA28EDBC13CB8.jpg Paris, 7:38 p.m., people are strolling through the Tuileries Garden, the sun starts to get down, its light shines golden, scraps of words emerge from the babble of voices, birds chirp, water gurgles in the fountain. Four men are sitting together, talking: What do they feel? Muße? This photo – taken by Lucia Götz as part of a photo competition during a Paris field trip in May 2022 – is related to the experience of Muße in the context of urban tourism, as it has been studied in recent years by Clara Sofie Kramer. Muße is understood as a moment limited in time, in which the experiencing person is free of performance expectations and free of temporal constraints. Thus, a free space is opening up for the person who experiences Muße, which represents an individual-qualitative added value for him or her. In the context of urban tourism, Muße is considered a travel need and is defined as feeling moments of freedom, serenity,...

  • Sitzend zur Muße im Städteurlaub

    • Authors: Clara Sofie Kramer
Abstract: Paris, Jardin des Tuileries, 28.05.2022.
