  • Situational Analysis of Hotels’ Social Media: The Sample of Five
           Destinations in Europe

    • Authors: Özge KILIÇARSLAN; Tahir ALBAYRAK
Abstract: The research on how tourism enterprises use social media and how successful they are is scarce in the tourism literature. Based on this gap in the literature, this study aims to compare social media performances of five-star hotels in the top five European destinations (London, Paris, Istanbul, Antalya and Rome) which attracted the highest numbers of foreign visitors in 2018. Facebook, Instagram and Twitter were selected as the social media platforms given the highest number of monthly users of those channels. Findings revealed that the hotels in Paris and London have more followers on Instagram than other platforms, while the hotels in Antalya have the highest number of followers on Facebook. Moreover, it is notable that the hotels in London use social media more actively than others whereas the hotels in Paris have a high number of likes for their Instagram posts. Research findings reveal that hotels should first increase the number of followers since it also affects other social media indicators, and develop social media strategies that can appeal to different customer groups.

  • The Relationship of Digital Travel Intermediaries’ Brand Equity with
           Customer E-Satisfaction

    • Authors: Anil KÜTÜK; Burcu Selin YILMAZ
Abstract: With the increasing role of information communication technologies in our lives day by day, tourism and travel businesses have transformed into online platforms by carrying their activities to the internet. Today, digital travel agents, which carry travel business to the internet, are one of the main elements that continue their activities online and contribute to the development of the travel industry. Digital travel brokers have to keep customer satisfaction high in order to gain an advantage over their competitors and increase brand equity. In this context, the brand equity of digital travel agents creates a difference in the eyes of customers and plays an important role in their purchasing preferences. The impact of their strong brand equity on the e-satisfaction of customers of digital travel agents is the problem of this study. Accordingly, the study included a research on measuring the effect of brand equity of digital travel agents on e-satisfaction of customers. As a result of the research conducted with a total of 421 participants who purchased from any digital travel intermediary in January, February and March 2021 and using structural equation modeling, it was determined that brand associations and brand loyalty, which are sub-dimensions of brand equity, positively affect e-satisfaction.

  • Delving into Airbnb Users’ Sources of Disappointment

    • Authors: Derya DEMİRDELEN; Mithat DİNÇER, Fusun ISTANBULLU DİNCER
Abstract: Airbnb has grown rapidly with a large supply and a consistently increased demand. The rapid rise of theAirbnb business model warrants deeper understanding of its users’ experiences. Against a redundant amountof research addressing guest complaints in the traditional hotel industry, very little has been done so far toidentify the nature of complaints aired by Airbnb users. With these thoughts in minds, the aim of the study isto develop a typology of complaints as experienced by Airbnb users. For this purpose, a total of 580 negativereviews retrieved from “Inside Airbnb” database were content analysed. The manual content analysis processwas also supported by a Word Cloud using Nvivo12. The analysis resulted in identifying 23 complaints under3 broad dimensions. These dimensions were labelled as ‘‘property-related complaints’’, ‘‘host-related complaints’’and ‘‘other complaints’’. By identifying what Airbnb users complain about, the present study is expectedto contribute to the limited literature on e-complaints in the hospitality industry.

  • The Effect of Augmented Reality Applications in Tourism on Destination
Visit Intention and Willingness to Recommend

    • Authors: Cansu ERTÜRK; Nezahat EKİCİ
Abstract: Interest in augmented reality (AR) applications in tourism, especially in experiential marketing and destination marketing, is increasing. By this research, it was aimed to determine which dimensions of experience affect the general visit experiences of consumers in AR applications and to examine the effect of the individual who experiences the AR application on the intention of experiencing the real experience. Within the scope of the research, data were collected from the 176 university students who experienced the AR at the Karaman Tourism Information Center, using a survey method. The research model was tested by Structural Equation Modeling through the Smart PLS program. According to the results of the research, while the dimensions of education and entertainment affect the general visit experiences of individuals; general visit experience affects individuals' intention to visit the promoted destinations and their intention to revisit the center. In addition, the intention of individuals to visit the promoted destinations and their intention to revisit the center also affect their willingness to recommend the promoted destinations. The obtained results are expected to provide insight to public and private institutions / organizations engaged in destination marketing activities specifically for tourism marketing.

  • Measuring Environmentally Sensitive Behavior of Hospitality Managers in
Slow Cities on the Basis of the Value Belief Norm Theory

    • Authors: Feriyal FARHADİ ANDARABİ; Azize HASSAN
Abstract: The International Cittaslow Scientific Committee has announced their concerns regarding climate change and solution of environmental issues within the scope of their membership criteria. Accordingly, it was aimed to gather information about environmental awareness behaviors of hotel managers in slow cities in Turkey. Value-Belief-Norm (VBN) Theory had been used to achieve the objectives of this study. 265 questionnaires were collected from top and mid-level hotel executives from 18 slow cities via simple random sampling method. LISREL and SPSS package programs were used for data analysis. According to the results of confirmatory factor analysis, it was found that the conformity values calculated in this sample were within acceptable ranges. It was also found that the regression weights between the correlation coefficients and the factor items found among the variables were within the acceptable ranges of value. Within the causal chain of this research, the correlation coefficient between the awareness of environmental issues and the readiness for undertaking assigned responsibilities represented the minimum value. A weak relationship was found between environmental norm and environmental awareness behaviors. The results of this study supported the fact that the socio-psychological factors in motivation of individuals’ proactive environmental awareness behaviors should be taken into consideration.

  • The Role of Emotional Intelligence on the Self-Leadership of Trekkers

    • Authors: Mehmet ERTAŞ; Mehmet IŞIK
Abstract: The purpose of this study is to reveal the role of emotional intelligence on the self-leadership of trekkers. Data were collected from trekking leaders by using quantitative methods through an online questionnaire. In total, 239 usable questionnaires were obtained. Quantitative analyzes were applied in this study such as explanatory factor analysis to reveal the validity and reliability of the scales, correlation analysis to determine the relationship between variables, and regression analysis to find out the effect of emotional intelligence on self-leadership. As a result of the analysis, it was concluded that emotional intelligence was effective on trekkers' self-leadership. The well-being and sociability variables of emotional intelligence have a positive effect on self-leadership, while the self-control variable has a negative effect. The fact that trekking leaders are highly motivated, compatible with the environment and able to cope with stress has a positive effect on their self-leadership. Also, the study offers guiding suggestions to mountaineering clubs and trekkers on emotional intelligence and self-leadership.
