Communities to Two National Parks in West Africa

    • Abstract: Publication year: 2019Source: American Journal of Tourism Management, Volume 8, Number 1Folusade C. Arowosafe, Kuuder Conrad-J. Wuleka, Entsua-Mensah M. Rose EmmaFringe communities in protected areas (national parks) are thought to benefit immensely from ecotourism development emanating from such facilities. This study sought to assess the perceived benefits of ecotourism development in nearby communities to two West African national parks namely: Kainji Lake National Park (KLNP) in Nigeria and Mole National Park (MNP) in Ghana. Stratified random sampling was used in selecting 10 households each in both countries. A total of 582 respondents were contacted through semi-structured questionnaires while key informant interviews including focus group discussions were used to obtain data on the direct, indirect and service benefits. Data analysed suggests that at KLNP, the provision of boreholes (45.7%) was the most cited direct benefit whereas 58.8% of respondents to communities adjacent MNP cited provision of health services. The indirect benefits revealed at KLNP were that residents had the opportunity to provide transport services to tourists, while at MNP, residents had an opportunity to display culture at a fee and sell arts and craft to visiting tourists. Service benefits unveiled in the study relate more of employment generation through ecotourism in both parks. A “needs assessment” survey of “flanking” communities is recommended as an appropriate measure to bridging the gap between what benefits the residents need and why such benefits should give the needed impetus to support conservation efforts in both parks.

  • The Relationship between Terrorist Events, Foreign Direct Investments
(FDI) and Tourism Demand: Evidence from Pakistan

    • Abstract: Publication year: 2018Source: American Journal of Tourism Management, Volume 7, Number 1Mir Alam, Ye MingqueThe aim of this study is to examine the impact of terrorism, on both the inflow of foreign direct investment (FDI) and on inbound tourism in Pakistan (TA - International tourism arrivals). The study is an attempt to estimate the short-run and long-run relationship between terrorism and FDI, as well as terrorism and inbound tourism by applying ARDL techniques for the period of 1995 to 2016. The ARDL bound test justifies the co-integration between terrorism, FDI and tourism. Moreover, the estimated results clearly indicate the negative short-run and long run impact of terrorism on FDI and terrorism on tourism. Furthermore, our findings also concur that terrorism has a huge impact on FDI as compared to tourism. Finally, the estimates confirm a unidirectional causality from terrorism to FDI and from terrorism to tourism.

The increasing tourism activities may result in the change of the environment and ecosystem of the destinations. The environmental destruction caused by the tourists has received attention from all sectors of the community. Studies have shown that destination image is one of the key factors attracting tourists and affecting their behaviors during their trips. The cross-cultural interaction between international tourists and locals, with the increasing amount of international travelers, is also intensified and receiving academic attention. Nevertheless, no research has studied the influence of the cross-cultural interaction in hospitality in the hospitality sectors in tourist’s Environmentally responsible behavior. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship among the international tourists’ destination images, perceived value and environmentally responsible behavior in Macau. The role of intercultural service encounter during tourists’ visit in the city related to their destination image and perceived value were also examined. Results showed that international tourists’ image of destination were significantly related to their perceived values, as the perceived values was found to play as a mediator between their image of the city and their environmentally responsible behavior. The results also revealed that the international tourists’ experience of service encounters had moderating effect between their destination image and perceived value of the trip. While at the same level of destination image, the tourists who had good experience during their encounters with local service sectors had better perceived value of their trip. Besides, when the international tourists who had higher perception of service encounters, the increase of the tourists’ image of destination could much better enhanced their environmentally responsible behavior, as compared with the ones with lower perception of service encounters. Managerial implications to the local service sectors and authorities are also suggested.
