  • The pandemic of loneliness: designing smart tourism for combating
           loneliness

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract Many technologically driven societies currently experience a “pandemic of loneliness“. The purpose of this viewpoint paper is to conceptualize loneliness as a persistent and widespread issue among consumers that has been amplified by the COVID-19 pandemic and increasingly spills over into the travel and tourism domain. This issue creates many challenges for smart tourism design as it implies changed consumer perspectives on smart tourism and needs for smart tourist experiences. This viewpoint paper is based on a review of relevant academic literature and online resources regarding the issue of loneliness, before and during the COVID-19 pandemic, and potential solutions in smart tourism settings. Loneliness has been completely overlooked by the smart tourism research agenda despite its tremendous implications for engagement, value co-creation, and the need for experience enhancement. This viewpoint paper proposes a framework for designing a loneliness-sensitive smart tourism ecosystem (LoSSTE). The purpose of this paper is to start a debate on how to mobilize smart tourism research for combating loneliness in the post-pandemic era and to outline areas for further research.

  • How does celebrity involvement influence travel intention' The case of
           promoting Chengdu on TikTok

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract This study examines the predicting effect of celebrity involvement on destination authenticity (object-based authenticity and existential authenticity) and hence travel intention in the context of TikTok tourism promotional videos. Data collected from 225 survey respondents indicated that celebrity involvement increases perceived destination authenticities (object-based and existential authenticity) and hence travel intention after watching TikTok celebrity videos. Furthermore, destination authenticities mediate the positive relationship between celebrity involvement and travel intention. The findings contribute to knowledge about social media marketing in tourism literature by blending authenticity theory and celebrity involvement in the context of TikTok celebrity promotions. Meaningful implications are provided for destination marketers.

  • An enabling Framework for Blockchain in Tourism

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract This viewpoint article proposes an enabling framework that identifies the use of various blockchain technologies in tourism and their applications (digitalization, automation, disintermediation, and intelligent environment) across the different stages of travel (pre-trip, during the trip, and post-trip). As we know, the tourism sector contributes immensely to world GDP and job creation. However, the COVID-19 pandemic, even after two years since it first appeared, continues to adversely impact the tourism prospects of countries across the world due to nationwide lockdowns and travel restrictions. As the world tries to adapt to the “new normal,“ the tourism sector is forced to re-think its ways of doing business and bring about innovations to facilitate the new norms of contactless and safe transactions. Also, the sector, more than ever, need to effectively deal with its inherent challenges such as transparency and credibility of information, fraudulent practices, opportunistic behavior of intermediaries, and foreign currency risks. Blockchain technology can transform the tourism sector by offering innovative solutions that address its pressing issues. However, our current understanding of blockchain application in tourism is quite limited, with previous work being largely fragmented and narrow in terms of both scope and application. We foresee that the insights offered in this viewpoint, including the framework, will advance both theory and practice and facilitate the implementation of blockchain-enabled solutions across different travel stages.

  • Visitors flow management at Uffizi Gallery in Florence, Italy

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract We present a data-driven solution to manage visitors’ access at the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, Italy. The goal is to avoid the long lines outside the Museum, improving not only visitors’ experience, but also decency and security in the urban area. The solution implements a queue management system based on two data analytics models, one predictive and one prescriptive, which determine the entry time of each visitor. The system, which requires a minimal hardware and software infrastructure, was on the field from October 2018 to January 2020 during the most crowded visiting days, namely the free access days. First we report on the whole design and implementation process, then we show the solutions effectiveness and discuss the lesson learned.

  • Asymmetrical impact of service attribute performance on consumer
           satisfaction: an asymmetric impact-attention-performance analysis

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract Analyzing the asymmetrical effects of service attribute performance on customer satisfaction can identify the different effects of service attributes on overall satisfaction at different levels of performance; it can compensate for the shortcomings of conventional linear regression analysis. Previous research on the asymmetrical relationship between restaurant attribute performance and satisfaction has lacked an assessment of market segmentation differences; it has also adopted an attribute priority division method based on the asymmetrical relationship, ignoring consumers’ attention to attributes. This paper presents a method to analyze the asymmetrical impact of service attributes performance on satisfaction based on online reviews. First, the sentiment score of the restaurant attributes were calculated by aspect-based sentiment classification and a clustering algorithm. Second, the asymmetrical influence of attribute performance on satisfaction was explored according to the sentiment score of the attributes. Finally, consumers’ attention to attributes was measured according to the frequency of attribute mentions and the priority of attribute promotion was investigated by integrating the asymmetrical impact-attention-performance analysis (AIAPA) model of attention. Based on the analysis of 92,904 online restaurant reviews in Tokyo collected on TripAdvisor using the proposed method, this research founds that the performance of most restaurant attributes has an asymmetrical effect on satisfaction. The asymmetrical effect of restaurant attribute performance on satisfaction varies by seasons and market segments. Using the AIAPA model, this research identifies the attribute priority of different restaurant types in different seasons.

  • Immersive technologies for tourism: a systematic review

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract This review provides a comprehensive view of immersive technology in tourism by critically analysing prior scholarly work. More specifically, it identifies the recent use of immersive technology in this field and the potential challenges it poses. This systematic review follows PRISMA guidelines and involves four key steps—identifying research questions, defining keywords, selecting studies based on inclusion and exclusion criteria, and synthesising results. It focuses on immersive technology in tourism-related peer-reviewed journal articles published from 2012 to 2020. The papers were selected from ten prominent journal databases. Some databases used combinations of search queries but with inclusion and exclusion criteria. This systematic review builds on the existing reviews by adding knowledge regarding state-of-the-art immersive technology usage in tourism and its integration with other technology. This review additionally identifies the potential challenges of implementing immersive technology in tourism. Finally, it presents a set of directions for future research in this space. In practice, the findings from this review can make both software developers and tourism providers aware of the potential of immersive technology in tourism. Software developers might consider appropriate designs that suit such usage, and tourism providers might consider using immersive technology to promote tourism destinations and provide a support system to maximise the benefits of immersive technology.

  • Mapping tourism and hospitality research on information and communication
technology: a bibliometric and scientific approach

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract Technology and information and communication technology (ICT) have been gaining importance in tourism and hospitality with a booming research interest during the last years and specifically recently due to the disruptions of the COVID-19 crisis. Hence it is useful to structure the existing knowledge in this field to better guide directions for future research. To that end, this study synthesizes the academic literature about ‘technology and ICT’ in tourism and hospitality by carrying out a bibliometric analysis. The study identified 2424 documents, including the words ‘technolog*’ and/or ‘ICT’ combined with ‘touris*’, ‘hospitality’, ‘hotel’, and/or ‘travel’ that were published in the period 1988–2021 and collected from tourism and hospitality journals indexed in the Web of Science (WOS) and SCOPUS databases. The analysis was carried out by using SciMAT software, which offers different bibliometric tools and methods in order to achieve consistent results through a keyword co-occurrence analysis and an evolution map. The findings revealed the major research themes, including technology acceptance model, electronic word-of-mouth, user-generated content, self-services technologies, robotics, smart tourism, virtual reality, and trust in technology. The study concludes by identifying and discussing a future research agenda.

  • Enhancing social media branded content effectiveness: strategies via
           telepresence and social presence

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract The commodification of mobile devices and penetration of high-speed Internet continue to make social media an ideal platform for businesses to reach consumers. Despite ample studies have been conducted to understand the factors that affect social media marketing effectiveness, the specific nature of tourism and hospitality products (i.e., highly experiential) has rarely been considered. Based on computer-mediated communication (CMC) theories and relevant work in the communication literature, this study investigates what affect the effectiveness of hotel social media branded contents. Self-reported data were collected from 318 respondents and were tested using confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation modeling. The findings demonstrate the positive impact of telepresence and social presence on customer purchase intention through trust and perceived usefulness. This work integrates CMC theories and technology acceptance model to provide a comprehensive explanation of social media branded content effectiveness. Practical implications are provided for hoteliers to design more effective social media branded contents.

  • Automatic generation of sailing holiday itineraries using vessel density
           data and semantic technologies

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract Sailing holiday activities represent a significant portion of the Blue Economy growth in Europe and across the world. Due to the global financial crisis, yacht ownership has declined, but demand for such holiday products remained steady, therefore shifting the yachters profile towards younger and less experienced consumers who prefer to charter boats, rather than own one. Boat chartering offers more flexibility to explore different regions from year to year, but this means that significantly more time must be spent planning the route, since local experience is absent. The tourists’ experience during the initial contemplation and planning phase, taking place weeks or months before an actual trip, and where a broad range of route options needs to be explored, could thus significantly benefit from support given by automated IT tools. Current literature demonstrates a complete lack of research in the development of itinerary recommendation systems in the context of sailing holidays. In this paper, we describe a methodology for the automatic generation of route recommendations, based on the semantic modelling of spatial data, and the determination of realistic sea route options, based on vessel density maps produced from raw AIS data. We demonstrate the implementation and results from this methodology using one of the most popular sailing regions of Greece, namely the Ionian Sea, as a case study.

  • Ranking hotels through multi-dimensional hotel information: a method
           considering travelers’ preferences and expectations

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract Although travelers tend to consider multi-dimensional hotel information when choosing their accommodation, few online travel agency (OTA) websites allow them to express their preferences and expectations for the selection criteria to obtain customized hotel ranking results. The lack of this function makes travelers have to spend extra time and effort in comparing different hotels to make the final decision. To solve this problem, a hotel ranking method considering travelers’ preferences and expectations is proposed based on multi-dimensional hotel information. In the method, considering the travelers’ actual process of hotel reservation through the OTA website, four types of hotel information (i.e., price, rating, location and text comment) are used. To make full use of these information, text mining, prospect theory and multi-attribute decision-making method are integrated into the proposed method. A case study is given to verify the reliability of the proposed method. The proposed method can be embedded into OTA websites to provide decision support for travelers’ hotel reservation, which will reduce the time spent by travelers in hotel search and comparison, thus effectively promote hotel reservation and improve traveler satisfaction.

  • Deep learning model based on expectation-confirmation theory to predict
           customer satisfaction in hospitality service

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract Customer satisfaction is one of the most important measures in the hospitality industry. Therefore, several psychological and cognitive theories have been utilized to provide appropriate explanations of customer perception. Owing to recent rapid developments in artificial intelligence and big data, novel methodologies have presented to examine several psychological theories applied in the hospitality industry. Within this framework, this study combines deep learning techniques with the expectation-confirmation theory to elucidate customer satisfaction in hospitality services. Customer hotel review comments, hotel information, and images were employed to predict customer satisfaction with hotel service. The results show that the proposed fused model achieved an accuracy of 83.54%. In addition, the recall value that predicts dissatisfaction improved from 16.46–33.41%. Based on the findings of this study, both academic and managerial implications for the hospitality industry are presented.

  • Profiling early adopters of blockchain-based hotel booking applications:
           demographic, psychographic, and service-related factors

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract To successfully introduce blockchain-enabled booking platforms in the tourism and hospitality industry, providers need to understand their target audiences. We present the results of a survey of 505 US consumers who, in a simulated hotel booking scenario for a leisure trip, picked between traditional Online Travel Agencies (OTA) and a blockchain-enabled booking app with varying degrees of services, discounts, and brand recognition. We find that blockchain-enabled booking apps that meet the following three conditions could attract up to half of the market: (1) offer discounts over OTAs, (2) provide services which go beyond mere booking, and (3) have well-known brand names. In a series of three nested logistic regressions, we investigate the impact of demographic, psychographic, and service-related traveler characteristics. We find that early adopters of blockchain-enabled hotel booking platforms will be young and highly educated. Potential cost savings over OTAs will also attract travelers with lower incomes and from larger households. Other traveler characteristics that facilitate adoption include a high preparedness to take risks, high IT innovativeness, prior familiarity with blockchain technology, and, mediated through IT innovativeness, a high Generalized Sense of Power. Male travelers are more likely than female travelers to be early adopters due to their higher familiarity with blockchain technology.

  • The use of 360-degree virtual tours to promote mountain walking tourism:
           stimulus–organism–response model

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract Based on the stimulus–organism–response (S–O–R) theory, this study attempts to investigate how the use of 360-degree virtual mountain walking tours can motivate audiences’ intention to take a real walking in the mountains. The survey results from 320 samples after watching a 360-degree virtual video reveal the positive influence of vividness (stimulus) on presence, emotional involvement, flow state, and enjoyment (organism), leading to the intention to take mountain walking tourism (response).
