  • Structural Morphology: An Effective Solution for Generating Efficient
           Structural Forms

    • Authors: Touchaphong Srisuwan
      Pages: 7 - 22
Abstract: Many natural forms have been imitated by architects and designers and applied to the design process in order to achieve the most efficient solution for structural arrangement and architectural form. The integration of knowledge in biology and structure in nature is an approach to structural morphology that offers the possibility of developing innovative forms and efficient structural prototypes. This review introduces the fundamental concept of structural morphology based on form-finding and structural optimization through the works of the biologist D’Arcy Thompson, the theory of Michell and the experimental studies of pioneers like Antoni Gaudi, Frei Otto and Heinz Isler. Some examples of buildings using structural morphology as effective design solutions are illustrated to substantiate the potential applications in architecture.

  • The Origins of Concrete Construction in Roman Architecture: Technology and
           Society in Republican Italy

    • Authors: Benjamin Ivry
      Pages: 8 - 11
Abstract: This book presents an analysis of early concrete architecture in Rome and Pompeii. Roman concrete, which includes volcanic ash, is an outstandingly durable material that in some cases has endured for thousands of years. It far outlasts the most common modern building material, Portland cement and is much less vulnerable to the effects of seawater. In addition, its production methods are less damaging to the environment that more modern substances. Among iconic buildings constructed with Roman concrete is the celebrated Pantheon in Rome. The author argues that Roman concrete was first utilized around the middle of the second century BCE. Its technical implementation in public constructions appear to have occurred after  use in private projects, including reconstruction of costly, high-level homes. Public building in Rome and Pompeii was organized by a small circle of nobility who hired private builders. While public monuments were first seen in Rome and Pompeii from around 150 to 125 BCE, the widespread popularly of Roman concrete had to wait until the end of the second century BCE. The use of concrete in Roman architecture began to be omnipresent as adopted in Rome, but also in distant Pompeii and Campania. These innovative techniques were brought about by  local élite groups, many of whom were not of Roman origin. In these localized centers of creativity, Roman concrete flourished. How the localized spread of these building techniques was achieved is of ongoing interest, insofar as some advocates today point to the ecological virtues of Roman concrete, its durability and other advantages compared to more recently developed building materials. Enduring principles of concrete production may guarantee that lessons learnt from Roman concrete can be applied to modern building practice.

  • Using GIS Techniques for Spatial Distribution Patterns’ Change of Green
Logistics Activities at Tourist Attractions to Current COVID-19 Situation:
           Case of Muang Nakhonratchasima District

    • Authors: Yaowaret Jantakat, Pradeep Shrestha, Pongpun Juntakut , Chomphak Jantakat
      Pages: 23 - 24
Abstract:  The aim of this study is to use Geographical Information System (GIS) techniques for spatial distribution patterns’ change of green logistics activities at tourist attractions to current COVID-19 pandemic in Muang Nakhonratchasima district. This study compared data based on 49 purposive questionnaires in year 2016 and 2021 using high/Low clustering Getis-Ord General G in ArcGIS program. The results found were totally in pattern of complete spatial randomness in both year 2016 and 2021. These outputs demonstrate normative pattern in such 12 tourist attractions of Muang Nakhonratchasima district. It is interesting to find that green awareness and green service are high among 8 green logistics activity. The green awareness and green service has been found to change positively in 9 and 8 respectively out of 12 tourist attractions. Also, these public and private organizations have realized to reverse logistics, using barcode, electric email, and information online for facing the current pandemic. Consequently, the obtained results will be suggested for Tourism Authority Thailand (TAT) Nakhonratchasima and office of Nakhonratchasima City Municipality.

  • Google Earth Engine for Monitoring Drought Impacts on Urban Tree using the
Standardized Vegetation Index (SVI) in Amphoe Mueang, Nakhonratchasima
           Province, Thailand

    • Authors: Pongpun Juntakut
      Pages: 41 - 54
Abstract: The study aimed to apply the Google Earth Engine (GEE) for monitoring drought impacts on urban tree with the Standardized Vegetation Index (SVI) for long-term and near real-time period in Amphoe Mueang, Nakhonratchasima Province, Thailand. Terra/MODIS satellites from 2000 to recently were analyzed and accessed drought impacts on urban tree in the study area. The results of this study indicated that the SVI values (-2.50 to -1.50) in the condition of very high drought were found mostly in 2019, especially in summer season and with an increasing trend of higher drought in the middle of the study area (Tambon Nai Mueang) and in the south part of the study area (Tambon Nong Chabok, Pho Klang, and Nong Bua Sala) where should be seriously realized and considered on coming dry conditions. Based on the SVI timeseries, the condition of high drought (-1.5 to -0.5) was obviously found in years of 2002, 2005, 2015, 2016, and 2019. In addition, the study demonstrated that the GEE could display the SVI image of the whole timescale in the map section and can receive a pixel value from the visualized SVI images by clicking on a location within the study area in long-term and near real-time period. Conclusively, the application of the GEE for monitoring drought impacts on urban tree can be an efficiency tool for planning urban management to mitigate the impact of drought on urban tree and is helpful to take care of tree growth in urban area.

  • Categorization of Product Innovations in the Residential Condominium
           Projects

    • Authors: Kongkoon Tochaiwat, Vitoon Pawanacharurn, Tipsuda Janjamlha
      Pages: 55 - 65
Abstract: Product innovation in residential projects is a key component that real estate developers
use as a key selling point today. However, product innovation is used in a variety of project elements. An analysis to categorize product innovations based on the degree of influence in the purchasing decisions of project residents can help them understand and choose innovations in order to effectively add value to their projects. This research aimed to study the key categories of the innovative products in residential condominiums of residents in Bangkok, Thailand, from surveying 300 condominium buyers and performing Exploratory Factor Analysis by Principal Component Analysis method, rotating perpendicular component axis by Varimax method. The results showed that the set of variables was analyzed in 5 groups which in order of the influence of the group of innovation elements affecting the decision to buy condominiums from greatest to least is as follows: (1) Digital innovation and intelligent systems, (2) Health and safety innovation, (3) Energy innovation, (4) Construction innovation, and (5) Automotive application innovation, which can explain the cumulative variance of 74.22%. The results of the research showed the degrees of influence on the purchasing decisions of various product innovations, which can provide competitive advantages for property developers.
