  • Cost-benefit analysis of choosing green construction materials: a case
           study approach from India

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Authors: J.S. Sudarsan, Srividhya Raju Sridharan
      Pages: 4 - 19
Abstract: Building and construction industry contributes more than 35% of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emission, making it one of the major contributors towards global warming. To ascertain the embodied carbon emitted at the different phases of constructing a structure, a trial study was carried out by observing two buildings - a residential building in the city of Bengaluru and a commercial building in the city of Hyderabad, India. This assessment was carried out using standard empirical formula used for estimating the carbon emission of construction building materials. Based on the estimation it was inferred that usage of sustainable material such as recycled steel and ferrock can bring down emissions by around 87%. The total emission and associated cost by adopting sustainable building materials is also estimated and compared with that of conventional material. The study justifies the increased cost of sustainable material through a Cost-Benefit Analysis approach.

  • Building information modelling (BIM) for structural components in
           construction

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

      Authors: B.D. Hilton, S. Azhar, M. Khalfan, I. Ul-Haq
      Pages: 20 - 45
Abstract: This research explored the use of the structural Building Information Models, as they relate to shop drawings and fabrication. This research attempts to help further identify obstacles that have been preventing the use of BIM on US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) construction projects. Data was collected by survey from firms that work with the USACE. The survey questions were designed to gather an overall understanding of BIM, its use, the structural aspects of the model, Level of Development, and funding options. It was found that the key obstacles preventing the use of structural BIM modelling, on USACE' projects, were the required level of development to produce shop and fabrication sheets, and the statutory limitations on design dollars. Key recommendations from the results of this research suggest that USACE needs to improve BIM enforcement requirements, and then guide and mentor project team members through the learning curve.

  • BIM: blockchain interface framework for the construction industry

      Authors: B.D. Hilton, S. Azhar, M. Khalfan, I. Ul-Haq
      Pages: 46 - 60
Abstract: The Construction industry contributes a noteworthy role in the economic development of a nation and the extensive usage of Building Information Modelling in Built Environment paved a podium for information exchange and digitisation. However, owing to the constraint of sole mechanism and dearth of apprehension of truthful facts, the construction industry issues cannot be rooted out completely. Block chain technology is a contemporary regionalised record database management system which bore the backbone of the development of a Bitcoin system and has powerful performance on updating of data, information repository and security minded approach. This paper investigates the fundamental philosophies and usage of these two domains in the construction industry using literature survey. On amalgamation of these two domains, the author develops an interaction matrix throughout the Life Cycle of a Project which enables the management of data in a secure, transparent and appropriate decentralised common Information Technology environment.

  • The costs of accidents in Qatar, Oman and Saudi Arabia construction
           industry

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

      Authors: B.D. Hilton, S. Azhar, M. Khalfan, I. Ul-Haq
      Pages: 61 - 81
Abstract: Considering the construction projects and the current status of occupational safety in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region, this article attempts to estimate the costs of accidents in construction. The parameters used in these estimates include the values of the current projects in the three main countries including Qatar, Oman, and Saudi Arabia; and the amount disbursed by the government organisations against injuries, disabilities, and deaths. The total costs of an accident in Oman are estimated at US$ 415,620 with an economic burden of US$ 205.73 million/year. In Saudi Arabia, the costs of an accident are estimated at US$ 91,940, while the economic burden of the Saudi economy is estimated at US$ 261.11 million/year. Similarly, the costs of an accident in the Qatari construction industry stand at US$ 205,526. The costs of an accident in these countries are quite higher than the costs in the USA, UK, AUS, and SA.

  • A framework for re-planning of workplaces due to impact of infections

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Authors: Rika Meshram, Virendra Kumar Paul, Tarlochan Singh Sidana
      Pages: 82 - 102
Abstract: We spend one-third of our lives at work and our working environment has a significant impact on our health. The outbreak of an infection in the workplace and remote working cannot replace the natural need for physical togetherness or human connections. This study aims to develop a framework for the re-planning of existing workplaces after the outbreak of infection. For developing the framework re-design needs were identified based on: (1) Literature reviews, online case examples; (2) real-time case examples, workplace design expert interviews; and (3) statutory norms by authorities. Conclusive findings indicate that various re-design measures, interventions need to be incorporated. However, there is a significant cost factor associated with it. This study gives insights into the stakeholder decision between integrating comprehensive re-design interventions and applying peripheral solutions to ensure the overall health of the workplace is not compromised.

  • Hedonic pricing model for impact of infrastructure facilities on land
rates: case study of Kudi Bhagtasni, Jodhpur, India

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Authors: Shruti Vaishampayan, Meghraj Dev, Upendra Patel
      Pages: 103 - 115
Abstract: Residential land prices vary significantly from area to area because of their geographical, locational, environmental and socio-economic characteristics. Residential land values are determined by multiple factors like access road width, distance to main road, distance to central business district, proximity to green space, hospital, school, etc. In this study, a detailed data set of various infrastructure facilities such as roads, water supply, sewerage are collected to analyse their impact on land prices and establish a Hedonic Pricing Model for impact on prices of residential properties in nine different sectors of Kudi Bhagtasni area in Jodhpur, Rajasthan India. A total of 131 samples were collected to establish this model for the monitoring period 2019-2020 for determining the market value of land rates of properties in the selected case study.
