  • Identification of cyanobacteria in Lagoa Salgada by metagenomic approach,
           Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

    • Authors: Thiago Corrêa de Almeida; Rodrigo Jardim Monteiro Fonseca, Priscila Gonçalves Moura, Elvira Carvajal, Nelson Peixoto Kotowski-Filho, Adriana Sotero-Martins
Abstract: Lagoa Salgada is a coastal hypersaline water body located in the north of Rio de Janeiro State and recognized by the presence of stromatolites. Cyanobacteria are the main primary producers of these structures in coastal hypersaline lagoons. The aim of the study was to identify the cyanobacteria present in Lagoa Salgada through metagenomics. The genetic material obtained from a water sample collected in June 2019 was submitted to sequencing by the shotgun method. The metagenomic data were analyzed using the MetaWrap version 1.3 pipeline to identify cyanobacteria and biological processes. The genus Synechococcus showed greater abundance, corresponding to 64.3% of the identified cyanobacteria, followed by Synechocystis (23.6%), Geminocystis (2%), and Calothrix (1.8%). The most abundant species were Synechococcus sp. RS9909 (46.7%), Synechocystis sp. PCC 6714 (16.4%), Synechococcus sp. WH 8101 (9.2%), Synechocystis sp. CACIAM 05 (4.3%). Thirty-three biological processes associated with genes present in the sample were identified. The Lagoa Salgada has a wide diversity of cyanobacteria in its aquatic ecosystem that is still little explored, justifying the need for protection and preservation of this lagoon environment.

  • Synthesis, characterization, and antimicrobial evaluation of novel
           1,2,4-oxadiazoles derived from trans-3,4-(methylenedioxy)-cinnamic acid

    • Authors: João Rufino de Freitas Filho; Clécio Souza Ramos, Leonardo Alexandre Barros Bezerra, Marcílio Wagner Fonte Silva, Giselle Barbosa Bezerra, Jucleiton José Rufino de Freitas, Queila Patrícia da Silva Barbosa Freitas
Abstract: Compounds containing heterocyclic ring systems are of great importance both medicinally and industrially. Five-membered 1,2,4-oxadiazole heterocycles have received considerable attention because of their unique bioisosteric properties and unusual wide spectrum of biological activities. In this study, a series of 2-(3-aryl-1,2,4-oxadiazol-5-yl)-trans-3,4-(methylenedioxy)-cinnamyl derivatives was synthesized and characterized, and in vitro experimental models were used to evaluate their antimicrobial activity. Synthesis, which involved microwave irradiation for 5 min, provided moderate yields of 1,2,4-oxadiazole (34–50%). Infrared (IR) and nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR  and 13C NMR) spectroscopy were used to determine the structures of 1,2,4-oxadiazole. The disk diffusion method was used to test the antibacterial activity of the novel 1,2,4-oxadiazole derivatives against Gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus faecalis, and Bacillus subtilis) and Gram-negative (Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae) bacteria. The derivatives, 2-(3-m-toluyl-1,2,4-oxadiazol-5-yl)-3,4-(methylenedioxy)-cinnamyl and 2-(3-pyrimidyl-1,2,4-oxadiazol-5-yl)-3,4-(methylenedioxy)-cinnamyl exhibited a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 19.5 μg mL−1 against S. aureus, and is four-fold more potent than the standard metronidazole (MIC =78 μg mL−1).

  • Categorization of extinction risk of Discocactus species

    • Authors: Anny Bianca Santos Cruz; Daniel Oliveira Reis, Juliano Ricardo Fabricante
Abstract: The present study aimed to update the categorization of the extinction risk of Discocactus bahiensis Britton & Rose and Discocactus zehntneri Britton & Rose, endemic Cactaceae species from Northeastern Brazil. The georeferenced species occurrence points were obtained from the online databases speciesLink and Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF). Polygons were traced using these points, being gridded with 4 km² cells and virtually divided in half (2 km²). Afterwards, the cells occupied by the species were counted in order to obtain their occupation areas. The species D.bahiensis presented 17 records and an occupation area of 32 km², while D.zehntneri presented 15 records and an occupation area of 24 km². The sites where the species are found present different factors of anthropic pressure. Thus, the species D.bahienses and D.zehntneri were categorized as “Endangered”, according to the B2biiicii criteria.

  • New records of the striped lizard Kentropyx paulensis from São Paulo,
           Brazil

    • Authors: Vinicius Oliveira Queiroz; Guilherme Marson Moya, Drausio Honório Morais, Cesar Augusto Bronzatto Medolago, Thaís Pagotto, Paula Prist, Fernanda Delborgo Abra, Fábio Maffei
Abstract: The endemic Cerrado teiid lizard Kentropyx paulensis is classified in the “Endangered” and “Vulnerable” categories by the lists of the states of São Paulo and Minas Gerais, respectively, and is therefore considered threatened. Thus, this work aimed to compile records of K. paulensis obtained in several works carried out in the Planalto Ocidental Paulista, which occupies almost half of the total area of the State of São Paulo, Southeastern Brazil. Records were produced in seven municipalities (Anhembi, Assis, Castilho, Jaú, Piracicaba, Quatá and Santa Bárbara d'Oeste) in the hot and rainy season (December to March) in vegetation types ranging from natural environments such as Cerradão and Semideciduous Seasonal Forest to anthropized environments as reforestation and pastures of Urochloa sp. The intense process of changing the landscape that the Planalto Ocidental Paulista went through in the last century, because of the economic model that the state adopted, may have collaborated to reduce the viable areas for the maintenance of these populations. These new records indicate that the occurrence of the species may be broader, as a result of adaptations to recent conversion of cover natural that occurred in the State of São Paulo.

  • First record of Astrocaryum G. Mey. (Arecaceae) for Ceará,
           Northeastern Brazil

    • Authors: Leonardo de Sousa Rodrigues; Izaias Carvalho de Sousa, Francisco Diego Sousa Santos, Elnatan Bezerra de Souza
Abstract: We document here the first record of Astrocaryum G.Mey. for Ceará State, Brazil. A. vulgare Mart., a species formerly known only to the Brazilian states of Amapá, Pará, Tocantins, Goiás, and Maranhão, was collected in areas of the Coastal Vegetation Complex, whose floristic composition is influenced by both the Caatinga and Cerrado domains. This finding expands our knowledge on the geographic distribution of this species in Brazil, contributing to its conservation and to future biogeographic studies. We present ecological, morphological and taxonomic data, a distribution map, photographs and illustrations, and update its conservation status.
