An overview of machine learning (ML) techniques applied to forest fire
studies

  Abstract: With the increasing frequency of forest fires globally, causing substantial environmental and economic damages, there is an imperative need for early fire prediction and detection. This study aims to examine the utility of machine learning techniques in predicting and identifying forest fires. A comprehensive review was conducted on various technologies and techniques proposed for forest fire prediction. Particular emphasis was placed on understanding the pros and cons of each machine learning algorithm, with an aim to identify the most effective approaches. It was observed that while numerous machine learning methods exist for forecasting forest fires, each possesses unique strengths and limitations. Some techniques, when tailored to specific forest characteristics, displayed enhanced predictive capabilities. Machine learning (ML) plays a pivotal role in advancing the field of forest fire studies. Identifying and utilizing the most suited ML technique, based on forest characteristics and the nature of data, can significantly augment prediction accuracy.

DNA barcoding of Campanula choruhensis Kit Tan & Sorger Endemic to
Artvin (Türkiye)

  Abstract: DNA barcoding is the method of description of species based on gene diversity. In current studies, registration, genetic identification and protection of especially endemic plant species are carried out by DNA barcoding techniques. Molecular studies are based on the amplification and sequencing of the barcode gene region by the PCR method. Campanula choruhensis Kit Tan & Sorger is endemic and widespread in Artvin, Erzurum and around Çoruh valley passing through it. Roots of this species are used in medicinal and aromatic studies. Intense roadworks and dam constructions are carried out in and around the distribution area of this species. This situation harms the habitat of the species and comes across with its extinction. In this study, the plastid barcode gene regions (trnK-rps16 and trnL-rpl32) of the C. choruhensis was sequenced from five populations. To make the identification of this species quickly and accurately, gene sequence compared with sequences of other related Campanula L. species. In addition, gene sequences and phylogenetic relations were given.

Comparative analysis of forestry systems in the United States and Turkey:
Practices, technologies, and challenges

  Abstract: The current study provides a comprehensive comparative analysis of forestry systems in the United States (US) and Turkey, covering various aspects such as forest ownership, natural resources planning, fire management, technological applications, silviculture, forestry education and challenges faced by each country. The findings mainly stems from the author’s first-hand investigations, field observations, and experiences during a postdoctoral research period in the US from 2022 to 2024. Additionally, a variety of information sources, including US forest plans, publications from the US Department of Agriculture Forest Service, relevant peer-reviewed literature, and open-source data, was used in the work employing the verbal analysis method. While certain similarities emerge, particularly in technology utilization and the historical development of forestry education, significant disparities are evident in fire management strategies, land ownership structure, silvicultural practices, and forest planning approaches between the countries. These differences can be attributed to unique environmental and historical conditions, varying economic development levels, and distinct regulatory legislations. The outcomes of this study suggest that there are valuable forestry practices that each country can learn or adopt from the other, emphasizing the potential for mutual exchange and improvement in natural resources management practices.

Pollen morphology of two Lysimachia L. (Primulaceae) species from European
Turkey

  Abstract: The pollen morphology of two species of Lysimachia, L. atropurpurea and L. punctata from European Turkey were investigated using light and scanning electron microscopy. The pollen grains of L. atropurpurea are trizonocolporate, while those of L. punctata are trizonocolporate and tetrazonocolporate; prolate spheroidal or oblate spheroidal in shape and small in size. Ektoapertures are elongated colpi, endoapertures are lalongate pori. Exine is semitectate; the ornamentation rugulate with polygonal lumina which are larger equatorially and smaller towards the colpi ends. Intine is very thin. Palynological analysis revealed that the pollen grains of the two species are quite similar, but there are differences in the sizes of different characters. The obtained results would contribute to the future taxonomic revision of the genus in Turkey.
