Does S2GLC 2017 map detect forests five years after regeneration'

  Abstract: Land cover and use maps are great sources of generalised information. Focusing on forestry, they could be employed to assess forested areas and their changes in time. Together with advances in technology we are able to capture images with a high spatial resolution, reaching 10 m for images from satellites of the Sentinel-2 mission. Our goal was to evaluate the applicability of maps resulting from the S2GLC project (Seninel-2 Global Land Cover) in assessing forest cover of areas five years after regeneration. Sample plots (n=33) were surveyed in a conventional manner by the Forest Service to assess forest cover. Then land cover maps were referred to data from the Polish Forest Data Bank and forest cover was assessed using two different programs: ImageJ (manually) and QGIS plug-in RasterStats (automatically). Assessment conducted on site indicated 94% total forest cover on all plots taken together. Both programs based on the data from the maps showed a lower forest cover amounting to 71 and 73%, respectively. In turn, RastrStats classified many more pixels than had been expected and a potential source of error was here discussed. Forest juvenile phases may be partially misinterpreted and classified on land cover maps also as marshes, peatbogs, herbaceous vegetation or cultivated areas. Hence, when areas after reforestation are defined as forest, land cover map used here may to some extent underestimate the actual area covered by forests.

The most valuable trees of the historic park in Kujan near

  Abstract: The historic manor park in Kujan is seen as a local refuge of biodiversity. It is formed by impressive trees, which are the living environment of rare species of beetles and other associated species. The purpose of the work was to make an inventory of the most valuable trees, determine their distribution, current dimensions, health status, and to make comparison of the results with previous inventory from 1984. The research was carried out in the 2020. Circumferences and heights of trees were measured and their health condition was assessed. Their locations (GPS) were also established and a map of the distribution of impressive trees was also created. A total of 70 valuable tress were inventoried, of which 3 is a nature monuments, 35 have monumental circumferences, 12 trees with a circumference close to that a natural monument and 20 with impressive circumference. The inventoried trees belong to 9 species, coming from 9 genera and 7 families. The most common valuable trees were European ash Fraxinus excelsior L. and Norway maple Acer platanoides L. The health condition of a majority (70%) of trees is average (3) and good (2). Among the most valuable trees a native species dominate, only the horse chestnut Aesculus hippocastanum L. is geographically alien.

Changes in the length of the shelterbelts adjacent to the agricultural
areas and roads at the beginning of the 21st century in Kalisz city

  Abstract: Green infrastructure helps to contain dust, ash, pollen, smoke, noise, and contaminated water that impact environment and decrease comfort of life or even harm significantly health. In urban landscape in Kalisz (second populated city in Wielkopolska) agricultural areas share is significant ̴ 44%. The state of completeness and presence of specific tree lines in agricultural areas is not recognized. Therefore the aims of the research were: the inventory of agricultural/road sections of tree lines and their localization in year 2008 and 2019; analyses of changes significance in length of tree lines, roads and agricultural areas in period 20082019.
  The contribution of Kalisz trees in road air pollution removal in agricultural areas is very small and decreasing. Loss of tree line length is unproportionally high in comparison with road sections along agricultural areas. Urban sprawl slowly becoming the reason of separation
  agricultural areas from direct exposition to road air pollution in borders of Kalisz.

The mite communities (Acari, Mesostigmata) in Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris
L.) forest after thinning – preliminary studies

  Abstract: Thinning is one of an anthropogenic process that can disturb natural processes in forest habitats. It consists of selectively cutting down trees, therefore, it is especially important to the creation of forest microhabitats for many species, including those living in the topsoil layer , such as mites from Mesostigmata order . The aim of the study was to characterize soil mites (Mesostigmata) communities in Scots pine stands (Pinus sylvestris L.) before thinning and in selected time intervals (1, 5, 10, and 20 years) after thinning. Studies were conducted on ten (two nonthinned and eight thinned) research plots located in stands of Sulęcin Forest District (Western Poland). In total, 50 soil samples with a litter layer were taken in October 2014 using a steel corer (20 cm2, 5cm depth). Soil fauna was extracted in BerleseTullgren funnels for seven days.
  In total, 286 mesostigmatid soil mites classified into 30 taxa (26 species and 4 genera) were recorded. The most abundant species were Paragamasus conus and V eigaia nemorensis. Only three species (Paragamasus conus, V eigaia nemorensis, and juvenile instars of Paragamasus sp.) were noted in all sampled forests. The mean diversity and species richness, but not the mite density per square meter, differed significantly between studied forests. The highest mite density , diversity , as well as species richness were recorded in stands 20 years after thinning, while the lowest one year after thinning. It can be concluded that thinning reduces the mite density in a short period (one year after thinning), however , the abundance, species richness, and diversity starts to increase with forest ageing.

Transpirational drying of wood: A review

  Abstract: This paper presents the basic assumptions and state of the research pertaining to the drying of wood in a forest. A clear distinction needs to be made between wood drying in the form of logs and whole trees that have been felled and left in a leafy state. The drying of whole trees has been known for many years as transpirational drying. This method is based on using the leaves to speed up the drying process. It is useful for both deciduous and coniferous trees, the difference being that, for deciduous trees, felling is limited to the growing season. This method is not used on a larger scale because of the lack of standardised technical solutions based on scientific research. There is growing interest in this type of method, however, mainly because of the economic benefits that can be obtained relatively simply. Solutions based on transpirational drying are being taken more and more seriously by the wood industry, and this is also being reflected in current scientific works. The aim of this paper is to present the benefits and limitations of transpirational drying.
