      Abstract: Surface floating marine pollution is responsible for a wide range of environmental hazards for marine fauna. Surface sea pollution monitoring is usually carried out by visual inspection from aircrafts or ships. However, human inspection is costly and results can vary from observer to observer. Remote sensing technology is a valid alternative to in situ measurements that can reduce costs and risks compared to in situ missions. In this context, aerial platforms provide a convenient tradeoff between coverage and resolution, both spatial and temporal, compared to ship or satellite based surveys. As well, small, unmanned aircrafts have the potential to be very inexpensive to operate, offer more flexibility of operation, and will benefit from active research on reducing size, weight, and power (SWAP) requirements of various sensors. However, the use of a multisensory system on board a commercial small drone is hard to implement considering that it is desirable to make a system reliable and robust. This article shows the main results of POSEIDON Project. Within this project, a commercial drone has been equipped with a radar system and a multispectral camera jointly observing a common area of interest. Flights have been performed in Spain in February 2021 and the main achievements are reported in this article.

  • Calibration Method of MEMS Gyroscopes Using a Robot Manipulator

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

      Abstract: Inertial measurement units composed of microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) gyroscopes are widely used sensors for small spacecraft and nanosatellite attitude estimation, control, and orientation. This is due to the fact that when developing nanosatellites, it is convenient to use devices of small dimensions and low energy consumption, which are advantages of MEMS sensors. However, one of the significant disadvantages of these measuring devices is their relatively low accuracy, which is related to systematic and random errors. For this reason, this article proposes a method for calibrating MEMS-based angular rate sensors using a robot manipulator for partial elimination of these errors. There are high-precision rotary calibration stands on the market that are designed to set angular rates and orientations when testing products of various types and accuracy classes. Similarly, a robot manipulator represents a possible option for performing this task. As a result, a modified six-position method as a sequence for performing laboratory calibration using a robot joint for high-precision rotation is proposed. The features of the results of processing experimental measurement data of tests have been validated on MEMS angular rate sensors. After calibration, the quality of MEMS gyroscope output data using this calibration approach was significantly improved.

  • Spaceborne Multibeam Phased Array Antennas for Satellite Communications

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

      Authors: Li Yu;Jixiang Wan;Kai Zhang;Fei Teng;Liujie Lei;Yukai Liu;
      Pages: 28 - 47
      Abstract: Multibeam phased array antenna is one of the core payloads of the satellite communication system, which has the potential to realize the transformation of the satellite communication system from application-adapted satellite to satellite-adapted application. This article provides a brief overview of the beamforming technologies used in spaceborne multibeam phased array antennas from three perspectives: analog beamforming, digital beamforming, and optical beamforming. The application status of multibeam phased array antennas in satellite communication is then classified and explained. Finally, the development trend of spaceborne multibeam phased array antenna is analyzed.
