  • Optimisation-based development process for small-sized UAS

      Abstract: This article presents the optimisation-based development process used to develop an advanced configuration BWB UAS within the framework of the Hungarian PIACI-KFI project. The article introduces the project, and the business application-based determination of the design requirements. An overview of past and state-of-the art aircraft design processes is discussed, and the importance of optimisation and process drivers as integral parts of such systems is highlighted. Finally, the design stages of the conceptual level UAS designs are described and discussed. At each stage, the four stages process includes an optimisation process driver as an integral component, generating a large set of potential designs. From the design dataset the Pareto optimal points were identified, and results selected by the project consortium. The outcome of the design process were 2 connected designs: a development prototype under EU Open Category, and the final production version which can achieve the project's business goals.

      Abstract: Pesticides have historically been viewed as dangerous because of their effects on the environment and human health. But they have also been recognised as saviours of farmers' incomes and global food security. There is no doubt a major shift in the global use of pesticides. The disadvantages of manual spraying of pesticides include low efficiency and high labour intensity. Agricultural UAV applications, which contribute positively to agriculture in terms of efficiency, economy and safety, are gaining more importance. This study, which summarises the applications of agricultural UAVs in Türkiye and around the world, discusses the legal constraints that farmers will face when using UAVs in agriculture, as well as the contributions of this technology to agriculture. Beginning with the current state of UAV use in agriculture, the international legislation and Turkish legislation were compared, and an overview of the current and future role of UAV use in agriculture was provided.

  • Business sustainability in aviation industry in post-COVID era through

      Abstract: The aviation industry has faced significant challenges in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the industry has shown resilience and adaptability, and there are indications that it will emerge stronger and more sustainable in the post-COVID era. This study's objective is to comprehend and identify sustainability practices that are relevant for the aviation sector. Further, the study also explores information technology as an enabler of sustainability in the aviation sector. The study uses a systematic literature review, published in Scopus, SCI, and ESCI-indexed journals. The study examines the industry's complexity with regard to sustainability and analyses key indicators using complete and reliable data from various stakeholders. The study focuses on social, economic, and environmental sustainability independently and identifies sustainability indicators for each pillar based on the triple bottom line's viewpoints (TBL). By taking into account the three distinct pillars of sustainability, the study expands on previous efforts to identify sustainable practices, applications, and enablers in the aviation sector.

  • Analysis of vertical flight efficiency in European countries with extended
           intuitionistic fuzzy TOPSIS method

      Abstract: Flight efficiency is an important policy design criterion in air traffic management systems. The efficiency of flight operations becomes an important factor in identifying bottlenecks and restrictions imposed by air traffic management on the flight trajectories preferred by the airspace user. In particular, measures for fuel-efficient operations are of great interest. In this study, the vertical efficiency criteria and performances of flights in European countries are examined with the extended intuitionistic fuzzy TOPSIS method. In light of the data presented by EUROCONTROL, the weights of the vertical efficiency evaluation criteria according to their importance levels were calculated. Vertical efficiency performance values of each country were measured. In addition, a comparison of the pre-and post-pandemic periods was made. According to the results of the study, the total CO<SUB align="right">2 delta resulting from the flight level in descending and climbing was determined as the most important criterion in the vertical efficiency evaluation. In the country ranking, Luxembourg has the highest value in vertical efficiency performance in air traffic management. It is expected that the results of the research will guide decision-makers in air traffic management and contribute to the gap in the literature.

  • A fuzzy analytic hierarchy process-based framework for air cargo
           infrastructure location

      Abstract: Efficient air cargo infrastructure is crucial for the safe and effective transport of high-value goods, facilitating globalisation and trade. A strategic decision of air cargo infrastructure location can boost airport competitiveness and fit into a multi-modal logistics network. This study presents a decision framework consisting of four primary factors (master planning, environmental impact, techno-economic considerations, and operational aspects), and 30 subfactors. The application of fuzzy analytical hierarchy process (FAHP) helps prioritise these factors and subfactors. Stage 1 consists of finding probable locations followed by its full evaluation in stage 2. In stage 1, 'techno-economic factors', is the topmost priority followed by operational, master planning and environmental factors. In stage 2, the top five subfactors are: 1) compliance with all regulatory/statutory requirements; 2) cargo traffic increase; 3) financial assessment; 4) environmental regulations; 5) business model (airport ownership included) and funding. Practitioners can employ this methodology in a two-stage decision framework.
