  • Integrated approach to gas-dynamic designing of supersonic air intakes of
           aircraft

      Abstract: The analytical and experimental studies of the aircraft’s supersonic air intakes have been carried out. An integrated approach to the gas-dynamic designing of aircraft’s supersonic air intakes that eliminates the scale effect problem of a wind tunnel with a small-sized testing area is proposed. The designing approach accelerates the development process and reduces the resource intensity due to the rational distribution of tasks between numerical and physical experiments. The results of the unique tests of the scaled ramjet’s air intake physical model in the supersonic wind tunnel are presented.

  • Analytical expression for uncertainty propagation of aerial cooperative
           navigation

      Abstract: In this paper, the propagation of uncertainty in a cooperative navigation algorithm (CNA) for a group of flying robots (FRs) is investigated. Each FR is equipped with an inertial measurement unit (IMU) and range-bearing sensors to measure the relative distance and bearing angles between the agents. In this regard, an extended Kalman filter (EKF) is implemented to estimate the position and rotation angles of all the agents. For further studies, a relaxed analytical performance index through a closed-form solution is derived. Moreover, the effects of the sensors noise covariance and the number of FRs on the growth rate of the position error covariance is investigated. Analytically, it is shown that the covariance of position error in the vehicles equipped with the IMU is proportional to the cube of time. However, the growth rate of the navigation error is, considerably more rapid compared to a mobile robot group. Furthermore, the covariance of position error is independent of the path and noise resulting from the relative position measurements. Further, it merely depends on both the size of the group and noise characteristics of the accelerometers. Lastly, the analytical results are validated through comprehensive Guidance, Navigation, and Control (GNC) in-the-loop simulations.

  • Ground based variable stability flight simulator

      Abstract: This paper discusses the development of a ground based variable stability flight simulator. The simulator is designed to meet the pilot training requirements on flying qualities. Such a requirement arose from a premier Flight-Testing School of the Indian Air Force. The simulator also provides a platform for researchers and aerospace students to understand aircraft dynamics, conduct studies on aircraft configuration design, flight mechanics, guidance & control and to evaluate autonomous navigation algorithms. The aircraft model is built using open source data. The simulator is strengthened with optimization techniques to configure variable aircraft stability and control characteristics to fly and evaluate the various aspects of flying qualities. The methodology is evaluated through a series of engineer and pilot-in-the-loop simulations for varying aircraft stability conditions. The tasks chosen are the proven CAT A HUD tracking tasks. The simulator is also reconfigurable to host an augmented fighter aircraft that can be evaluated by the test pilot team for the functional integrity as a fly-through model.

  • Wireless-based technology for optimizing of operation of the aviation
           engine control system

      Abstract: An approach for improving of efficiency the operation of distributed control system of aviation engine based on wireless technology with high productivity and resolution of wave distributed surface has been presented. It can be applied for development of new principles of correct location the nodes, including the data processing equipment, the intellectual sensors, actuators, repeaters, central units in adaptive control strategies of aviation engine. The optimization method for processing information, using adaptive wavelet filters, as an optimal filter, that minimizes the average square of a common error for organizing the connection between wireless elements in the control systems of aviation gas turbine engine, has been considered, on the theoretical point of view. Also, the wavelets applications in the Wireless Distributed Automatic Control System (WDACS) for aviation engine, the requirements for the construction of its node, supported by the protocol stack, the scheme and the programs with a combination of connections the information exchange between elements have been considered, from the practical point of view.

  • Application of an optimal control algorithm for a gyroscope system of a
           homing air-to-air missile

      Abstract: Missile homing precision depends mainly on the correct determination of the current angle between the Gyroscope System Axis (GSA) and the target line-of-sight (LOS). A gyroscope automatic control system shall ensure spontaneous levelling of this angle, hence, constant homing of the gyroscope system axis in on the LOS, i.e. tracking the target by the head. The available literature on the subject lacks a description of how to use the controlled gyro system in the process of guiding the missile onto the target. In this paper, the authors present the original development of an optimal control algorithm for a gyro system with a square quality indicator in conditions of interference and kinematic influence of the missile deck. A comparative analysis of the LQR with the PD regulator was made. PD regulator parameters are also selected optimally, using the Golubencev method, so that the transition process of the homing system fades over a minimal time, while simultaneously ensuring the overlapping of the gyroscope axis with the target line-of-sight. The computer simulation results have been obtained in a Matlab-Simulink environment and are presented in a graphic form.

  • Airline pilot situation awareness: presenting a conceptual model for
           meta-cognition, reflection and education

      Abstract: The dissertation research summarized here, utilized the Grounded Theory Method to develop a conceptual model of pilot situation awareness from 223 Aviation Safety Reporting System (ASRS) narratives. The application of Latent Semantic Analysis aided the theoretical sampling of ASRS reports. A multistage model was developed involving attention, perception, interpretation, decision making, and action in support of goal-driven behavior. Narrative report coding identified several categories of situation awareness elements that pilots direct their attention to in building and maintaining situation awareness. Internal to the aircraft, flight crews directed their attention to the aircraft’s flight state and automation state. They also directed their attention to the condition of the aircraft, the functioning of the crew, and the status of the cabin. External to the aircraft, flight crews directed their attention to airport conditions, air traffic control, terrain, traffic, and weather. Pilots were also aware of the passage of time. Twelve characteristics of situation awareness were identified from narrative report coding which were subsequently compared with existing theoretical perspectives of situation awareness.

  • Research on characteristics of turbo jet engine combustion chamber

      Abstract: The characteristics of the combustion chamber of turbo jet engine with various parameters are examined in this article. The scientific works of other authors analyzing operating parameters of the jet engines were reviewed. Their recommendations were considered. Computer simulations of the combustion chamber were performed using different combustion reactions. The exhaust gas temperature and its dependence on the combustion mixture were determined. A practical study was also carried out, during which the experimental exhaust gas temperature was measured, and the trends of temperature change were determined. After analyzing both theoretical and practical results, the conclusions are presented.
