  • Geospatial Study on the Parking Demand Management in Kigali City, Rwanda

    • Abstract: Publication year: 2020Source: International Journal of Traffic and Transportation Engineering, Volume 9, Number 3Gatesi Jean de Dieu, Byiringiro Emmanuel, Abijuru Theoneste, Nsengiyumva DanielToday’s traffic movements in Kigali-city experience the traffic jams especially during demand peak hours when a great number of vehicles moving in the streets are being disturbed by vehicles parked along the curbs of the streets with inadequate width to serve as a roadway and parking at the same time. There are also other vehicles parked illegally causing traffic congestion in the streets and disturbing the services provided according to the land use. This study aims to conduct a parking demand assessment on parking facilities available in Nyarugenge CBD, making the parking inventory study and land use study so that the results of those studies are used in providing an effective parking management tool to reduce traffic jam issues related to inadequate usage of on street parking facilities. Both public on street and off-street parking facilities have been surveyed and the results show that the average level of usage of on street parking is 83.35% while that of off-street parking is 65%. The results also show that longer jam moments occur in hours where on street parking facilities are at high level of usage (around midday) and the jam recorded with longest time has been found to spend 92 seconds.

  • Estimation of the Impact of the Overloaded Truck on the Service Life of
           Pavement Structures in Nigeria

    • Abstract: Publication year: 2020Source: International Journal of Traffic and Transportation Engineering, Volume 9, Number 2Oyekanmi Olufemi Jacob, Ibe Callistus Chukwudi, Ebiringa Oforegbunam Thaddeus, Ejem Ejem AgwuOverloading by commercial trucks in Nigeria is a serious problem. The overloaded trucks stress the road structure beyond safe bearing capacity. Traffic load is a dominant function on pavement design because the main feature of pavement is to resist traffic load. In Nigeria, the percentage of overloaded trucks can reach more than 94% in the total number of vehicles and maybe one of the substantial factors that reduce the service life of the road pavements. This paper presents the analysis results of the weigh-in-motion survey data at Lokoja-Abuja in Nigeria and the impact of overloaded trucks on the pavement. For the analysis the simplified approach was used, the axle loads were converted into representative single-axle loads based on 4th power formula by AASHTO 1993 equation. The vehicle damage factor of vehicles is presented and was compared with the Highways National Standard to estimate the remaining service life of the pavement. The analysis showed that the vehicle damage factor determined from weigh-in-motion data is hugely higher than vehicle damage factor of the national standard in Nigeria which may lead to accelerated deterioration, reducing the service life of the pavement structures. From this result, we can conclude that there is a reduction in the service life of approximately about 10.48 years from the design life of the pavement. Which means the service life of the Lokoja-Abuja pavement designed for 15 years will start deterioration just after four years and six months of commissioning.

  • An Optimal Solution for a Real Transportation Problem with Lingo Code

    • Abstract: Publication year: 2020Source: International Journal of Traffic and Transportation Engineering, Volume 9, Number 2Hilal A. Abdelwali, Mohsen Alardhi, Ahmad E. Murad, Jasem M.S. Al-RajhiThe transportation problem deals with finding the minimum cost of transporting a single product from a certain number of sources to a given number of destinations. The problem can be expressed by the formulation of a linear model, and it can be solved using the simplex algorithm. But due to its particular structure of the linear model, it can be solved with more efficient methods. LINGO is one of the compelling tools which can be used to solve optimization problems. It includes integrated packages that include powerful language for expressing related optimization models, a full-featured environment for both building and editing problems, and a set of fast built-in solvers. In this paper, a lingo code is prepared based on the formulation of transportation problems to solve an actual case study. The optimal solution of the studied case study reduces the total ton-kilometers by 9.1702 % of the real distribution amounts. The real data, the lingo code, the optimal solution, and a comparison between the real and optimal solutions are both included.

  • Quantify the Relationship Between Roundabout Geometry and Delay

    • Abstract: Publication year: 2020Source: International Journal of Traffic and Transportation Engineering, Volume 9, Number 2Nikolay Nazaryan, F. Clara FangThis paper reports about an investigation of the effect of the length of an additional approaching lane of a roundabout on the delay. To calculate delay, a mathematical algorithm has been developed, representing dependence of velocity a traveling vehicle on its traveling distance The study shows a mathematical algorithm which can supply more accurate and simpler calculations, represented through the sixth-degree polynomial function possessing just three extrema points: a maximum and two minimums. It is shown that application of data collection on existing additional lanes, performed during different periods of time during weekdays will allow us to obtain the family of curves , where each curve will have its own individual extrema points with the consequent coordinates and These curves, obtained on the base of the analytical function and the practical data collection, will allow road engineering experts to design a roundabout’s additional approaching lane and to estimate the proper delay with the very high degree of accuracy.

  • Improving Pedestrian Safety and Traffic Operations at a Major Unsignalized
           Arterial Intersection in Dhaka City

    • Abstract: Publication year: 2020Source: International Journal of Traffic and Transportation Engineering, Volume 9, Number 1Md. Shoaib Chowdhury, Md. Owalid HossainDhaka, the capital city of Bangladesh, has been emerged as one of the most densely populated, congested, and unsafe cities in the world today. In an effort to improve traffic operations on Dhaka city roadways, government has been building flyovers at major bottleneck locations. Moghbazar-Mouchak flyover has recently been connected to Saheed Captain Mansur Ali Sarani (SCMAS), which is a heavily travelled north-south arterial road. The SCMAS and Old Elephant Road (OER) intersection is a major un-signalized intersection that facilitates pedestrian crossings on SCMAS. The surrounding area of the intersection includes a large number of educational institutions, government offices, hospitals and high-rise residential and commercial buildings. As such, the pedestrians (including students and general public) heavily utilize the SCMAS and OER intersection crossings. However, due to a heavy vehicular flow level on SCMAS, the intersection crosswalks not only become a major safety hazard for pedestrians but also a major cause of traffic operations problems on SCMAS (particularly in the south bound direction). The purpose of this study is to find a compromised solution to both pedestrian crossing and traffic operations problem on SCMAS. Based on comprehensive field study and pedestrian opinion survey, it is found that a pedestrian foot-over-bridge with an elevator service would be a desirable solution to the problem not only for safe pedestrian crossings but also for traffic operations improvements on SCMAS.

  • Assessment of Health Economic Benefit of Bicycling; A Case Study on Pilot
Bicycle Link Summit-CMC in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

    • Abstract: Publication year: 2020Source: International Journal of Traffic and Transportation Engineering, Volume 9, Number 1Kibret Gebremedhin Hagos, Ehitayhu Mesele HagosCycling is not popular in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. In 2015, three bicycle lanes started service in the city for the first time. Although the compatibility of sites for bicycling was studied, the health and environmental impact were not analysed. The objective of this study was to evaluate health economic benefits due to increased physical activity from bicycling from interventions to increase the number of cyclists. Existing situation and two scenarios with different levels of bicycling were considered for analysis. Sensitivity analysis was also conducted considering a 20% variation in demand and cost. The health and economic assessment tool (HEAT V.2.3) was used to estimate the health economic benefit of increased physical activity from cycling. Inputs for HEAT tool were made based on reliable secondary sources and engineering judgment. Results indicate that health economic benefits from bicycling represent 4-20% of investment to encourage bicycling. There was an increase in health benefits related to an increase in the number of cyclists. Wider network intervention was also more sensitive to intervention costs and expected demand. Planners and policymakers are advised to design low-cost interventions and increase the number of cyclists.

  • Development of a School Zone Road Safety Risk Rating System for Dhaka -
           the Capital City of Bangladesh

    • Abstract: Publication year: 2019Source: International Journal of Traffic and Transportation Engineering, Volume 8, Number 3Javed Bari, Kazi Md Shifun Newaz, Quazi Rokaiya Haque, Md. Nawfal Ahmed, Faria TabassumThe main purpose of this paper is to present the findings of an investigative research conducted on the source, nature, frequency and severity of the road safety risk factors associated with the major school zones of the capital of Bangladesh – the Dhaka City, where about 20 million people reside. In the absence of adequate local research in this field, this study was deemed very important. In this study, a school zone road safety risk rating system has been developed using a scientific and legitimate algorithm for determining the actual safety situation of the school zones. The risk factor identification has been done based on real data. The study proposes an index system to sort qualitative data obtained from surveys conducted during the study and convert them into quantitative data. Related traffic accident data were analysed. By using the school zone road safety risk rating system developed in this study, it was possible to accurately identify the risk rating of any particular school zone of the study area; ranging from low to high. The proposed technique can be replicated for any school zone in a big city like Dhaka in order to identify the road safety situation particularly for the school students, which will help in safety enhancement operation and future planning of the city.

  • A Methodological Approach of a Hinterland Planning Project Decision
           Support

    • Abstract: Publication year: 2019Source: International Journal of Traffic and Transportation Engineering, Volume 8, Number 3Ebtissem Sassi, Abdellatif Benabdelhafid, Sami HammamiIn the framework of territory planning, decision-makers are often confronting the analysis of a long report containing at the same time quantitative and qualitative information. In this context, this paper will be useful in the development of a decision support system leading to an optimal organization of a hinterland based on sustainable development. Our modest contribution aims at suggesting a methodological approach of decision support of a hinterland planning project in multi-criteria and multi actor’s frame in the most favorable conditions to the environment, to the economic efficiency and the social fairness. The suggested methodological approach allows, on the one hand, the reinforcement sharing of knowledge on the territory and analyzing multisource criteria on the other hand. Such a decision support tool for a planning project does not exist anymore in the literature. This work may help in filling this gap. The preoccupations of this work are showing the best decision to make among many identified ones and this is against the objectives and the criteria fixed by the actors intervening in the process of decision making. This methodological approach can be used as a decision support tool available to the decisional authority when making the necessary decisions.
