  • Covid-19 pandemic: small actor point of view on manufacturing and
           logistics

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

      Authors: Olli-Pekka Hilmola, Oskari Lähdeaho
      Pages: 87 - 105
Abstract: Coronavirus has changed businesses profoundly, and argumentation goes that small companies have been hurt seriously. This research analyses survey responses of mostly Finnish companies out of the effects of pandemic. Findings show that small manufacturing and logistics companies have been hurt somewhat in their ability to serve customers as medium and large companies have performed well. Small companies also have lower expectations to continue their operations in China and Russia. In the future small companies do not expect inventory investment to grow that much either, and their transportation modes reaching China and Russia will not change in such great extent as what is the case with medium and large companies. However, it seems that railways will be preferred over other transportation modes in the following decade. Among small companies, transportation mode shares are taken from all other modes, while in medium and large they are mostly arising from air freight.

  • Sustainable inland port development: integrated framework applied to
           Modjo Dry Port Ethiopia

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Authors: Anniek Munters, Bart Wiegmans, Lóránt Tavasszy
      Pages: 106 - 130
Abstract: Scientific research on dry port development often focuses on advanced economies and is mostly lacking for developing countries such as Ethiopia. This paper developed a new integrated framework with three pillars (social, environmental, economics) for dry port development and its applicability is tested for Modjo Dry Port (MDP) in Ethiopia. The results indicate that most stakeholders prefer more efficient operations either on the current terminal or on an increased size terminal. Furthermore, the 'labour component' is regarded as very important (high employment levels at the MDP terminal; approximately 1000) while in the scientific literature this is regarded as much less important. In Africa, employing people is important and reflects the desire to increase the labour force of MDP even further when expanding. This is remarkable as usually productivity growth results in a reduction in employees, especially given the already very high employment numbers for MDP. Finally, the relative equal importance of most sub-criteria results in a status quo where no decision is taken or the most optimal decision is not advocated.

  • Implementation of the dry port concept in central and Southeastern Europe
           logistics network

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Authors: Snežana Tadić, Mladen Krstić, Milovan Kovač
      Pages: 131 - 151
Abstract: This paper examines the Intermodal Transport (IT) network of Central and Southeastern Europe for the Dry Port (DP) concept implementation. The focus is on the analysis of the potential logistics cost savings in container flow realisation that follow the DP concept implementation. The problems of determining the necessary number of DP terminals, their location and container flows allocated to them are solved by two different approaches. The approaches differ in the ways of locating the terminals and allocating the flows. The first approach considers two-leg container flow realisation while locating individual and independent DP terminals. The second approach considers also a three-leg container flow realisation possibility and locates interconnected DP and IT terminals, where DP terminals are seen as a specialised type of IT terminals that have a direct connection with seaport terminals. Two different MILP (Mixed Integer Linear Programming) models for the two approaches are developed and applied. The obtained results indicate that both DP concept approaches could improve the existing IT network in terms of overall logistics costs.

  • Collaborative logistics: a study on the impacts on fertiliser
           transportation costs and CO2 emissions

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Authors: Rodrigo Duarte Soliani, Murilo Daniel De Mello Innocentini
      Pages: 152 - 178
Abstract: The present study aimed to confront the current scenario of collaborative logistics between soy and fertiliser transportation operations in the ports of Santos and Paranaguá, with scenarios characterised by the increased incidence of this practice, thus comparing the economic impacts and CO2 emissions from these operations. The base scenario was defined through the application of a questionnaire to 96 drivers in both ports. Comparing the base scenario with the ideal scenario, in which the entire volume of imported fertiliser would participate in the collaborative logistics, the potential impact regarding transportation costs would be around (BRL) $ 14,696,509.89 at the port of Santos and (BRL) $ 11,806,055.10 in Paranaguá. In the ideal scenario, there was a reduction in CO2 emission in the order of 28.19 kg CO2 per ton transported in the port of Santos, while the reduction obtained in Paranaguá was 14.38 kg CO2 per ton.
