      Abstract: Abstract We compute all the simply connected homogeneous and infinitesimally homogeneous surfaces admitting one or more invariant affine connections. We find exactly six non equivalent simply connected homogeneous surfaces admitting more than one invariant connections and four classes of simply connected homogeneous surfaces admitting exactly one invariant connection.

  • The e-value: a fully Bayesian significance measure for precise statistical
           hypotheses and its research program

      Abstract: Abstract This article gives a survey of the e-value, a statistical significance measure a.k.a. the evidence rendered by observational data, X, in support of a statistical hypothesis, H, or, the other way around, the epistemic value of H given X. The e-value and the accompanying FBST, the Full Bayesian Significance Test, constitute the core of a research program that was started at IME-USP, is being developed by over 20 researchers worldwide, and has, so far, been referenced by over 200 publications. The e-value and the FBST comply with the best principles of Bayesian inference, including the likelihood principle, complete invariance, asymptotic consistency, etc. Furthermore, they exhibit powerful logic or algebraic properties in situations where one needs to compare or compose distinct hypotheses that can be formulated either in the same or in different statistical models. Moreover, they effortlessly accommodate the case of sharp or precise hypotheses, a situation where alternative methods often require ad hoc and convoluted procedures. Finally, the FBST has outstanding robustness and reliability characteristics, outperforming traditional tests of hypotheses in many practical applications of statistical modeling and operations research.

      Abstract: Abstract In this paper we survey the estimation of nonparametric regression models using wavelets, under different conditions on the innovations, on the predictor variables, on the function spaces involved and on the regularity conditions imposed. We begin with the seminal works of Donoho and co-authors, in the regular fixed design and independent and identically Gaussian noise and move towards non-regular designs, random designs and correlated errors.

  • Nonlinear dispersive equations: classical and new frameworks

      Abstract: Abstract The purpose of this manuscript associated to the Golden Jubilee of the IME-USP is to present selected material from the author’s scientific contribution dealing with nonlinear phenomena of dispersive type. That study has been a source for modern research in the dynamic of traveling wave solutions of different type and it has been disseminated through publication of scientific articles and/or books. Here, we provide the reader with information about current research in stability theory for nonlinear dispersive equations and possible developments. Also, I hope it inspires future developments in this important and fascinating subject. In this manuscript we consider the following topics: stability theory of solitary waves and the applicability of the concentration–compactness principle, the existence and orbital (in)stability of periodic traveling wave solutions for nonlinear dispersive models, nonlinear Schrödinger and Korteweg–de Vries models on star-shaped metric graphs. The use of tools of the theory of spaces of Hilbert, the spectral theory for unbounded self-adjoint operators, Sturm–Liouville’s theory, variational methods, analytic perturbation theory of operators, and the extension theory of symmetric operators are pieces fundamental in our study. The methods presented in this manuscript have prospect for the study of the dynamic of solutions for nonlinear evolution equations around of different traveling waves profiles which may appear in non-standard environments such as star-shaped metric graphs.

  • Dynamics of multicritical circle maps

      Abstract: Abstract This paper presents a survey of recent and not so recent results concerning the study of smooth homeomorphisms of the circle with a finite number of non-flat critical points, an important topic in the area of One-dimensional Dynamics. We focus on the analysis of the fine geometric structure of orbits of such dynamical systems, as well as on certain ergodic-theoretic and complex-analytic aspects of the subject. Finally, we review some conjectures and open questions in this field.

  • An encounter of classical differential geometry with dynamical systems in
           the realm of structural stability of principal curvature configurations

      Abstract: Abstract This evocative essay focuses on some landmarks that led the author to the study of principal curvature configurations on surfaces in \({\mathbb{R}}^3\) , their structural stability and generic properties. The starting point was an encounter with the book of D. Struik and the reading of the references to the works of Euler, Monge and Darboux found there. The concatenation of these references with the work of Peixoto, 1962, on differential equations on surfaces, was a crucial second step. The circumstances of the convergence toward the theorems of Gutiérrez and Sotomayor, 1982–1983, are recounted here. These theorems are pointed out as the first encounter between the line of thought disclosed from the works of Monge, 1796, Dupin, 1815, and Darboux, 1896, with that transpiring and evolving from the achievements of Poincaré, 1881, Andronov–Pontrjagin, 1937, and Peixoto, 1962. Some mathematical developments as well as open problems sprouting from the 1982–1983 works are mentioned on Sect. 10.

  • On Mazur rotations problem and its multidimensional versions

      Abstract: The article is a survey related to a classical unsolved problem in Banach space theory, appearing in Banach’s famous book in 1932, and known as the Mazur rotations problem. Although the problem seems very difficult and rather abstract, its study sheds new light on the importance of norm symmetries of a Banach space, demonstrating sometimes unexpected connections with renorming theory and differentiability in functional analysis, with topological group theory and the theory of representations, with the area of amenability, with Fraïssé theory and Ramsey theory, and led to development of concepts of interest independent of Mazur problem. This survey focuses on results that have been published after 2000, stressing two lines of research which were developed in the last 10 years. The first one is the study of approximate versions of Mazur rotations problem in its various aspects, most specifically in the case of the Lebesgue spaces \(L_p\) . The second one concerns recent developments of multidimensional formulations of Mazur rotations problem and associated results. Some new results are also included.

      Abstract: Abstract Pseudo-holomorphic curves in symplectizations, as introduced by Hofer in 1993, and then developed by Hofer, Wysocki, and Zehnder, have brought new insights to Hamiltonian dynamics, providing new approaches to some classical questions in Celestial Mechanics. This short survey presents some recent developments in Reeb dynamics based on the theory of pseudo-holomorphic curves in symplectizations, focusing on transverse foliations near critical energy surfaces.

  • From Mathematical Morphology to machine learning of image operators

      Abstract: Abstract Morphological image operators are a class of non-linear image mappings studied in Mathematical Morphology. Many significant theoretical results regarding the characterization of families of image operators, their properties, and representations are derived from lattice theory, the underlying foundation of Mathematical Morphology. A fundamental representation result is a pair of canonical decompositions for any translation-invariant operator as a union of sup-generating or an intersection of inf-generating operators, which in turn can be written in terms of two basic operators, erosions and dilations. Thus, in practice, a toolbox with functional operators can be built by composing erosions and dilations, and then operators of the toolbox can be further combined to solve image processing problems. However, designing image operators by hand may become a daunting task for complex image processing tasks, and this motivated the development of machine learning based approaches. This paper reviews the main contributions around this theme made by the authors and their collaborators over the years. The review covers the relevant theoretical elements, particularly the canonical decomposition theorem, a formulation of the learning problem, some methods to solve it, and algorithms for finding computationally efficient representations. More recent contributions included in this review are related to families of operators (hypothesis spaces) organized as lattice structures where a suitable subfamily of operators is searched through the minimization of U-curve cost functions. A brief account of the connections between morphological image operator learning and deep learning is also included.

  • Isoparametric families of submanifolds

      Abstract: Abstract In this paper we present a generalization of the theory of isoparametric families of hypersurfaces in a Riemannian manifold of constant curvature, in that we consider families of submanifolds of codimension greater than one. Our starting point is a definition of isoparametric family of submanifolds which coincides with the classical definition formulated by Cartan (Ann Mat 17:177–191, 1938) in the case of codimension 1. That definition is given in Sect. 1, where we also show that the mean curvature vector of the submanifolds that belong to an isoparametric family has constant length (cf. Proposition 1.4). In Sect. 2, we study the isoparametric families whose orthogonal distribution is integrable. In this case we prove that each leaf of the isoparametric family has flat normal bundle, the integral manifolds of the orthogonal distribution are totally geodesic and that the mean curvature vector of each submanifold in the isoparametric family is parallel with respect to the normal connection (Proposition 2.3). In Sect. 3 we study the parallel submanifolds. In this way we obtain an effective procedure to construct normal isoparametric families (i.e. whose orthogonal distributions are integrable) which, however, is not explored in the present paper (cf. Proposition 3.5). In Sect. 4 we show that the leaves of an isoparametric family of submanifolds in a Riemannian manifold of constant curvature have constant principal curvatures. Finally, in Sect. 5, we obtain a relation between these principal curvatures which generalizes the fundamental formula of Cartan to higher codimensions.

  • Techniques and results on approximation algorithms for packing circles

      Abstract: Abstract This survey provides an introductory guide to some techniques used in the design of approximation algorithms for circle packing problems. We address three such packing problems, in which the circles may have different sizes. They differ on the type of the recipient. We consider the classical bin packing and strip packing, and a variant called knapsack packing. Our aim is to discuss some techniques and basic algorithms to motivate the reader to investigate these and other related problems. We also present the ideas used on more elaborated algorithms, without going into details, and mention known results on these problems.

  • Stability of Morse-Smale maps

      Abstract: Abstract \(C^r(B,B)\) is the space of \(C^r\) maps of a Banach manifold B to itself, bounded together with their derivatives up to the order r. It is chosen a topological subspace \(KC^r (B,B)\) satisfying certain compactness and reversibility conditions, the subspace depending on the class of problems in view. A large class of maps in \(KC^r(B,B),\) called Morse-Smale maps and the notion of stability relative to the largest invariant set A(f) are defined, and it is proved that the Morse-Smale maps are stable relatively to A(f) and form an open set in \(KC^r (B,B), r\ge 1.\) Examples of \(KC^r (B,B)\) can be constructed with maps arising from flows of retarded functional differential equations, of certain types of neutral functional differential equations and parabolic PDE and some other special PDE. Also, if B is compact, the set of all \(C^r-\) diffeomorphisms of B is a particular example of \(KC^r (B,B)\) and the main result yields the proof for the stability of Morse–Smale diffeomorphisms of a compact manifold, originally established in Palis (Topology 8:385–405, 1969) and Palis and Smale (in: Global analysis proc symp pure math, vol 14, AMS, Providence, RI, 1970).

  • From isoparametric submanifolds to polar foliations

      Abstract: Abstract We will show how isoparametric submanifolds and polar actions on round spheres lead to polar foliations and polar actions on compact symmetric spaces and compact Riemannian manifolds with positive curvature. Our emphasis will be on the classification of these submanifolds and actions.
