Authors: Joseph A P Wilson Pages: 204 - 216 Abstract: In this response to Sam Gill, I contend that European colonizers were not the first to combine and synthesize the goddesses of Eurasia and North America. I suggest that Athabaskan-speaking Native Americans share one identifiable Mother Earth concept with Yeniseian linguistic cousins in post-neolithic Siberia. Further, I regard this concept as congenitally related to a particular Mother Earth deity common to late ancient north Europe, via the multiethnic cultural continuum of the grassland steppe corridor connecting ancient central Europe to Siberia. Authors: Jeremy Sorgen, Rebecca C Bartel, Emma Frances Bloomfield Pages: 435 - 443 Abstract: In 2021, the world was facing the second year of the COVID-19 pan-demic and the Doomsday Clock read ‘100 seconds to midnight’. In the United States, Donald Trump was ousted from the presidency, but not before he incited an attempted coup that cost several lives and entrenched political tensions. One year had passed since George Floyd’s murder ignited nationwide protests. Keywords:

Authors: Greg Johnson Pages: 502 - 521 Abstract: Reflecting upon the role and place of advocacy in realtionship to scholarship in the context of the Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT) dispute on Mauna Kea (Hawai’i), I chart shifts in my career regarding activism and advocacy with reference to moving away from the ‘purity’ demands on scholarship common in religious studies and toward an ethics of engagement more common in Indigenous studies. This framing is in the service of addressing questions about the entailments of public engagement, including its demands, rewards, and costs. My primary argument is that in some contexts engaged scholarship is the condition of possibility for ethical and theoretically generative scholarship. I distill three basic lessons from my experiences on and around Mauna Kea: (1) the importance of foregrounding community relationships, (2) the formative role of community led decision-making for charting research and advocacy efforts, and (3) a willingness to recalibrate expectations around academic timelines and outcomes.
