Abstract: As preservation professionals, we know that stabilizing foundations, retrofitting historic properties with sustainable upgrades, and conducting paint analyses are important parts of the process, but typically happen only after the hard work is done to protect historic places through advocacy and identifying funding sources to transform buildings from derelict eyesores into thriving community hubs. Abstract: We want to get started with a question: What does preservation mean to you' And specifically, what are we preserving and for whose benefit'For me, preservation means saving existing buildings for future reference and repurposing them and recycling—not tearing down—but saving as much as you can and incorporating into new purposes.For me, preservation is preserving the history in spite of development. It’s not just the buildings, because the buildings are just the physical embodiment of the history that our country, that our shared memory conveys. For those of you who are not familiar, it’s the independent federal body that advises the president and Congress as well as state and local governments on historic preservation policy. Abstract: I was invited to spend a little time this afternoon giving my perspective on the future of preservation law. And, like any good preservationist, I’m going to start my look-forward by looking back.I graduated from college in the mid-1970s, in the middle of what has been called the “Environmental Decade.” In 1970, NEPA [the National Environmental Policy Act] was enacted, the EPA was created, and the Clean Air Act was given real teeth.
