  • Walking the Restoration Plank: Where Will You Land'

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: We may love natural habitats, but love, alas, is often unrequited. As we pursue our dream of restoring those habitats, we are often awakened by the constraints and pragmatic nightmares that stop us from replacing our lost natural heritage. Our community walks a thin plank between the degraded present towards the distant end, a fully restored historical biodiversity. Many forces can push us off the plank before we reach our end goal. We may end up falling into a programmatic abyss below. We sometimes think the plank goes from historical nature to wholly degraded. Think of one end being Yosemite National Park, a magnificent and diverse community of organisms in a wide landscape. The far end is Times Square in New York ... Read More

  • Castanea dentata Interactions and Ectomycorrhizal Colonization in Novel
           Ecosystems

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: This study documented that when compaction is avoided upon reclamation, non-native L. cuneata does not inhibit tree growth in soils with pH, nutrients, and soil structure adequate for BC2F3 chestnut hybrid establishment.Management may de-emphasize the need for herbicide for continual maintenance of L. cuneata when methods that avoid or mitigate compaction, coupled with competitive tree species, are employed.L. cuneata's abundance in the herbaceous canopies (70–87% cover) that surrounded chestnut trees did not interfere with field ectomycorrhizal root symbiosis.Documenting fungal species that correlate with abiotic soil conditions may contribute to our understanding of how ECM communities reassemble during soil ... • Comparison of the Absolute and Relative Difference Spectral Indices to
Estimate Burn Severity: The Case of Endangered Nothofagus alessandrii
           (ruil)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Accurate information of burn severity by fires is necessary to design strategies for ecosystem recovery. Spectral indices derived from Sentinel 2 images can be used to map the spatial distribution of burn severity, but their performance will depend on the vegetation structure. The Mediterranean zone of central Chile holds a high level of plant endemism. In summer 2017, nearly half a million hectares of land burned in this zone, severely affecting some endemic species such as Nothofagus alessandrii Espinosa (ruil). We assessed the performance of three spectral indices commonly used for mapping burn severity, and showed that relative spectral indices estimated better burn severity than the absolute index. Fire effects ... Read More

  • Long Term Progress in Riparian Restoration with Concurrent Avian Declines
in the Southern San Francisco Bay Area (CA)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Largest understory changes in revegetated habitats occurred within the first eight years.Overstory ecological indices in restored sites were largely determined by initial plantings.Ecological indices for vegetative and avian communities in revegetated sites generally became more similar to those of the reference remnant riparian habitat after more than 15 years.Long-distance migratory bird species declined across all habitats, while residents and short-distance migrants declined only in one habitat area.Riparian restoration for long-distance migratory birds requires a regional perspective.Riparian ecosystems provide essential ecological functions, ecosystem services, and economic benefits, including wildlife ... • Compost Treatment Trials for In Situ Control of Japanese Knotweed
           (Polygonum cuspidatum)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Polygonum cuspidatum (Japanese knotweed) is a non- native, naturalized plant that usually occurs in uplands but may occur in wetlands—a facultative upland plant. Polygonum cuspidatum spreads rapidly and creates monoculture stands that outcompete native vegetation (NY Invasive Species Clearinghouse 2019). Established areas can be very difficult to eradicate, often requiring mechanical digging and repeated herbicide applications (McHugh 2006). Japanese knotweed can grow on a wide variety of soils and substrates (Talmadge and Kiviat 2004), and since accepted eradication methods generally leave the soil unchanged, a method to make the soil inhospitable for its growth and development may be desirable.Day et al. (2009) ... Read More

  • The Effect of Oxbow Lake Restoration on Breeding Birds in an Agricultural
           Landscape

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Oxbow lakes are among the most biologically diverse aquatic systems in the world (Ward 1988). They are formed when the meander of a river is cut off through sedimentation, leaving an isolated, curved body of water in the former channel (Wohlman and Leopold 1957). As a feature of river floodplains, oxbow lakes tend to have high biodiversity and ecological function compared to neighboring areas because of their structural complexity and the accumulation of organic matter over time (Hillman et al. 1986).Oxbow lakes and their functions have been lost from many agricultural areas. Stream channelization and removal of adjacent riparian vegetation has drastically altered historical stream hydrology and resulted in oxbows ... Read More

  • Restoring, Remaking and Greening Freshwater Ecosystems: A Review of
           Projects in China

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Recent projects in China affected by the State Council’s 2015 Water Pollution Prevention and Control Action Plan (China Environment News 2015) have aimed at mitigating water pollution and improving water quality. These projects examined ways of cleansing water bodies by artificially adjusting the proportion and structure of microorganisms, plants and animals in an effort to restore and stabilize a freshwater ecosystem. This attempt to reconstitute healthy biological systems informs ecological restoration, particularly freshwater ecosystems.Since the 2015 Water Pollution and Control Action Plan and efforts to comprehensively improve China’s physical environment, a number of diverse projects on a range of scales have ...
