  • Balinese and Landrace Pig Body Size Used for Spit Roast Pork

      Abstract: Abstract. Spit roast pork or commonly called “be guling” is food from pigs of approximately 3-4-month-olds, varied between female or male pigs, filled with spices and vegetables such as cassava and grilled (rolled) to be cooked, marked by color transformation from skin color to brownish read and crispy skin. In Bali Island, Balinese and Landrace pigs are commonly used for cooking spit roast pork. The pig selection is determined by the market price and customer needs. A high market price and demand such as ceremonies lead people to select small-sized pigs; however, a low market price and demand (sold for consumption) lead people to select large-sized pigs. This study aimed to examine Balinese and Landrace pig body sizes used for spit roast pork. The study was performed by measuring the pig's length, height, chest circumference, and abdomen circumference. Data collected were then analyzed using the T-test to discover the mean difference. Meanwhile, the variation difference was tested using the F-test. The study demonstrated that Balinese pig’s body size was insignificantly (P>0,05) smaller than the Landrace pig for spit roast pork on 3-4-month-olds. Balinese pig’s body size had a significantly larger variation (P<0.05) (more varied) than the Landrace pig on 3-4-month-olds. Keywords: Body size; Balinese pig; Landrace pig; Spit roast pork

  • Efficacy of Polyherbal Oil Against Gastrointestinal Nematode in Kintamani

      Abstract: Gastrointestinal helminth parasites in animals can be zoonotic-parasitic. This study aims to determine the efficacy of polyherbal oil formulations against intestinal worm parasites of Kintamani dogs. This study used 24 Kintamani Dogs aged 3-6 months which were kept by releasing them into the wild. The anthelmintic potency of polyherbal oil formulations was determined by measuring Eggs Per Gram of feces (EPG), using the Modified Stoll Dilution method before and seven days after treatment. P0 as control was given a placebo, while groups P1, P2, and P3 were given Polyherbal oil at doses of 300, 600, and 900 mg/kg body weight for three consecutive days. The results showed that there was a decrease in the EPG value sequentially P0, P1, P2, and P3 which was -4%, 23.1%, 66.7%, and 81.3%. Based on the identification of worm eggs, it was shown that the efficacy of polyherbal oil against Toxocara canis decreased EPG at P1, P2, and P3 by 26.09%, 73.33%, and 86.08%. Against Ancylostomata spp respectively at P1, P2 and P3 caused a decrease in EPG of 17.39%, 52.63%, and 72.0%. Against Strongyl spp worms respectively at P1, P2 and P3 caused a decrease in EPG by 16.67%, 58.82%, and 73.68%. Statistical analysis showed that polyherbal oil had a significant effect (P<0.05) on the decrease in EPG. We can conclude that the polyherbal oil formulation has vermicidal efficacy against intestinal worm parasites in Kintamani dog puppies.

  • Molecular Analysis of Lactic Acid Bacteria SR4 Strain Isolated from
           Gastric’s Juice of Bali Cattle

      Abstract: Lactic acid bacteria SR4 strain is known to have potential as a probiotic source according to the previous study. The isolate derived from the gastric’s juice of bali cattle has characteristics such as its resistance to growth at low pH, namely pH 2, 3, and 4, its tolerance to bile concentration of 0.6 mM, and its inhibition against Gram-positive and negative bacteria. On the other hand, a complete molecular analysis of the isolate has never been carried out. Based on these considerations, the molecular analysis of the LAB SR4 strain becomes interesting to present. The study was initiated by cultivating LAB SR4 isolate on an MRS broth medium. The isolate was further confirmed molecularly through analysis of the 16S rRNA gene which was initiated by isolating genomic DNA followed by PCR  reaction using universal primers 27F and 1492R. The PCR product of the 16S rRNA gene was sequenced and further analyzed using the MEGA 5.2 software. The data were then analyzed descriptively and presented in the form of tables or figures. The results showed that the LAB strain SR4 was identified as a Pediococcus pentosaceus. This strain potentially to develops as a source of bacteriocin and it can be applied as a bio preservative, improvement of the meat taste, inhibition of inflammation, and also as antagonism of cancer.

  • Analysis of Nutrition, Quality and Health of Local Pork by Sex

      Abstract: The purpose of this study was to determine the nutrition, quality and health of local Balinese pork based on gender. This study used a qualitative exploratory survey method, which took 10 samples of local pork slaughtered at the Pig Slaughterhouse (TPB), consisting of five female local pork samples and five male samples at three different locations. Assessment of pork nutrition and quality can be done using the Association of Official Analytical Chemist (AOAC) method, while pork health assessment can be done by inspection, palpation, and inches. The results showed that the average nutritional value of male pork was as follows: water content 74.5%, ash 1.2%, crude protein 19.7%, crude fat 4.6%, while the average female pork was water content 74.9 %, ash 1.2%, crude protein 18.8%, crude fat 5.1%. The quality of local pork, both male and female, is reddish brown in color, smells of fresh blood with a soft consistency and smooth texture, the average pH value of male and female pigs is 5.37, and the average water holding capacity of male and female pork is 89.19%. 88.73. The health of the carcass and internal organs of male and female local pigs were normal (healthy), no abnormalities were found, except for a white spot in the liver of the male pig. It can be concluded that the nutrition, quality and health of local pork are in accordance with meat quality standards and are fit for consumption.

      Abstract: Abstract.The purpose of this study was to determine the open reduction internal fixation on femoral and tibial diaphysis oblique fractures on a local dog. A physical, hematological, and radiography examinations had been conducted on a 7-months-old female dog, weighing 8 kg at the Animal Educational Hospital, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Udayana University. Based on the result of the examinations, the animal was diagnosed with sinister caudal extremity femoral and tibial diaphysis oblique fractures with fausta prognosis. Open reduction surgery was conducted to return the fractured bones back to its normal position. Post operation, the animal was administrated intramuscularly with 0,8 ml of long acting amoxicillin (Longamox), continued with amoxicillin and clavulanic acid (Claneksi Forte) with 2 x 2 ml as given dosage for 10 days after surgery and Meloxicam tab 7,5mg with 1 x 0,8 mg  as given dosage for 5 days after surgery.
