  • Anthelmintic Effects of Betel Nut (Areca catechu) Extracts on Roundworms
(Toxocara canis) and Hookworms (Ancylostoma caninum) Isolated from
           Vietnamese Dogs

    • Abstract: Background and Objective: The seeds of the Areca palm (Areca catechu), commonly known as betel nuts, are widely used in Vietnam as a traditional treatment for a range of ailments in both humans and animals. However, there has been limited research to investigate a scientific basis for this phytotherapeutic application. In this study the effects of solvent extracts from the betel nut on roundworms (Toxocara canis) and hookworms (Ancylostoma caninum) freshly isolated from the intestines of Vietnamese domestic dogs was investigated. Materials and Methods: Dried betel nut powder was extracted using three different solvents: Ethanol, methanol and hot distilled water. Extracts were then diluted with physiological saline solution to concentrations of 1000, 500, 250 and 125 mg mL–1 to perform in vitro tests on dog helminths. In order to evaluate their effects, time elapsed between exposure to each extract preparation and the death of 50% (lethal dose 50, LD50) and 100% (lethal dose 100, LD100) of parasites was measured. Results: Betel nut extracts showed anthelmintic properties against both roundworms and hookworms. Areca caninum was more sensitive than Toxocara canis as evidenced by a significantly shorter time to lethality recorded for all tested extracts. Of the three solvents investigated, methanol and aqueous extracts exerted the strongest and weakest effects, respectively. These results indicated that methanol is a suitable solvent to extract anthelmintic-active components from betel nuts. Conclusion: This study demonstrated in vitro the potent anthelmintic effects of betel nuts on canine ascarids and strongylids, thereby corroborating use in Vietnamese ethnic medicine to treat gastrointestinal worm infestations of humans, to which dogs are companion animals.

  • Association of Some Hematological Parameters, Blood Glucose, Thyroid
Hormones and Repeat Breeding Syndrome: A Case-Control Study

    • Abstract: Background and Objective: A repeat breeder (RB) cow is not conceived after three consecutive inseminations. This study examined the association of Haemoglobin (Hb), packed cell volume (PCV), total erythrocytes count (TEC), total leukocytes count (TLC), plasma glucose and thyroid hormones (T3 and T4) with repeat breeding syndrome in cross-bred dairy cows reared under the semi-intensive system. Materials and Methods: Twenty crossbred multiparous, apparently healthy dairy cows with the age of 4-8 years and a body condition score of 2.5-3 were used. The animals were divided into two equal groups. Group A (n = 20) were healthy normal cyclic cows used as control. Group B (n = 20) were RB cows. Blood samples were collected once from all animals for measuring the Hb, PCV, TEC, TLC, glucose, T3 and T4. Results: When compared to the normal cyclic cows, no significant differences were detected (p>0.05) in the Hb, PCV, TEC, serum T3 and T4 in RB cows, but the TLC was significantly higher (8.2±0.5 vs 5.5±0.12 103 mL–1, p

  • Growth Performance and Haematological Characteristics of Broiler Finisher
Birds Fed Three Moringa Plant Parts as Additive From 5-8 Weeks

    • Abstract: Background and Objective: The addition of different plant parts as a supplement in the diets of poultry has been reported to have some effects on animal physiology and biochemical functions. This study evaluated the growth performance and haematological profiles of broiler finisher chickens fed leaf meal, raw and toasted seed meals of Moringa from 5-8 weeks. Materials and Methods: A total of 96 day-old chicks were allotted to 4 treatment groups of 8 birds each in a completely randomized design with 3 replications. The trial lasted for 28 days for the finisher phase. Results: The result showed significant differences (p
