  • Bacterial Flora Associated with Clarias gariepinus and Oreochromis
           niloticus in a Natural Habitat

    • Abstract: Background and Objective: Fish is a highly desirable foodstuff as it possesses excellent nutritional components, it is man’s most important source of high-quality protein. Fish supplies, however, are dwindling due mainly to pollution of the aquatic environment. Toxicants enter fish, they affect fish organs, bioaccumulate and invariably affect the end consumer of such contaminated fish. This study aimed at identifying the bacterial flora present in the gut and gills of Oreochromis niloticus and Clarias gariepinus. Materials and Methods: This research was conducted to assess the bacterial load on fish species found in Ureje Reservoir in Ekiti State. The most popular freshwater fish species in Ureje Reservoir are Oreochromis niloticus and Clarias gariepinus. Samples of each fish species were kept in sterile bags and transported to the laboratory for bacterial analysis. Results: Eight bacteria species were identified (Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella typhimurium, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumonia, Proteus spp., Enterococcus spp. and Streptococcus spp.). The highest colony count was found in the gut of Clarias gariepinus. The presence of these bacteria species could pose a potential public health threat to consumers. Conclusion: It is recommended that better handling and processing methods should be adopted to eliminate health risks to fresh fish consumers.

  • Evaluation of Body Morphometry of Uda Rams Under Different Housing Types
and Seasons in a Semi-Arid Region, Nigeria

    • Abstract: Background and Objectives: Linear body measurements are vital when examining relationships between economic characteristics and reproductive performance because of the interactions between heredity and the environment in several animals. A study was conducted at the Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, Livestock Teaching and Research Farm to evaluate the effects of housing type and season on the performance and some physiological parameters of Uda rams. Materials and Methods: A total of sixty (60) yearling Uda rams were used in the study with twenty (20) rams in each season. Factorial completely randomised design (3×5) was used in this experiment with animals (4) representing replicates while housing types (5) and season (3) representing the factors (treatments). Four animals were allotted to each housing type with each animal serving as replicate, the housing types were half wall with zinc roofing (HZ), the half wall with thatch roofing (HT), the full wall with zinc roofing (FZ), the full wall with thatch roofing (FT) and finally natural without wall and roofing (N). Data were collected each season on body morphometric and linear measurements. Results: The result shows significant (p0.05) observed with regards to the season in terms of initial SC and final SL. Conclusion: Animals housed in the half wall with thatch had significantly higher, Testicular Weight (TWT) and better and testicular volume and were higher during the rainy season.

  • Effect of Novizyme on Performance and Egg Quality of Laying Hens

    • Abstract: Background and Objective: Layer farming is one of the most important and vast growing agribusinesses due to the high global demands for eggs. Chicken eggs are the best source of quality protein, vitamins, minerals, fats and are badly needed by the many millions of people who live in poverty. Therefore the current study was designed to find out the effects of (Novizyme) enzyme supplementation on parameters of performance and egg quality of Hi-sex layer hens. Materials and Methods: The study was conducted at the poultry production unit, training and research farm, College of the Animal Production University of Bahri, Elkadaru Area, Khartoum North. Sixty commercial layer hens (hi-sex) breed at 53 weeks of age were used. Birds were kept in a semi-closed housing system equipped with battery cages. Layer hens were randomly assigned into four dietary treatment groups (0, 0.05, 0.075 and 0.1% of feed) in a complete randomized design. Results: The supplementation of Novizyme in different graded levels in layers diet showed no significant effects in all measured parameters of performance, internal and external egg quality characteristics throughout the experimental period. Conclusion: Based on the obtained result of the present study, It can be concluded that the inclusion of Novizyme enzyme on layers diet at the level of inclusion tested do not improve performance and egg quality characteristics.

  • Use of Locust Meal as Alternative Protein Source to Fish Meal in Practical
           Diets for Fingerling Oreochromis niloticus

    • Abstract: Background and Objective: Reducing fishmeal levels is key to reducing feed costs for commercial fish farming and ensuring the sustainability of this enterprise. This study was aimed to evaluate the effects of replacing fish meal protein with locust meal protein in the feeds for fingerling Oreochromis niloticus (3.5±0.94 g). Materials and Methods: Seven practical diets (350 g kg–1 crude protein, 14.90 kJ g–1 gross energy) replacing 0, 10, 20, 30,40, 50 and 60% fish meal protein by locust meal protein were prepared. The diets were fed to triplicate groups of fish near to satiation for 8 weeks. Results: The live weight gain (LWG, 262.6-719.7%), feed conversion ratio (1.58-3.18), protein efficiency ratio (0.70-1.41), specific growth rate (2.30-3.76% day–1), protein retention efficiency (3.62-9.42), hemoglobin (61.2-98.1 g dL–1), hematocrit (16.37-31.35%) and RBCs counts (13.5-23.2×106 mm–3) in fish fed diets with 0, 10,20 and 30% replacement of fish meal with locust meal did not show any significant differences. Conclusion: However, further replacement of fish meal by locust meal beyond 30% resulted in a significant fall (p

  • Sero-Epidemiological Survey of the Main Respiratory Infections in Broiler
Farms in the Peri-Urban Area of Dakar and Thies (Senegal)

    • Abstract: Background and Objective: A seroepidemiological survey was carried out in Senegal in an area with a high concentration of poultry for Newcastle disease, infectious bronchitis (IB), LPAI subtype H9 and Mycoplasma gallisepticum mycoplasmosis in broilers. Materials and Methods: During the survey, 20 broiler farms with at least 1,000 clinically affected birds per flock aged 16-45 days with respiratory symptoms were visited. On each farm, a questionnaire was administered and blood samples were taken from 20 chickens in the most affected house. A serological investigation by indirect ELISA was carried out on 384 sera. Serological infection rates varied according to disease, age, vaccination program and husbandry system. Results: The infection rates were in order of importance 40% for LPAI subtype H9, 35% for infectious bronchitis and 5% for Newcastle disease. Serology was negative for Mycoplasma gallisepticum. Infection rates were higher in the department of Rufisque, in semi-intensive farms and older chickens. Co-infections were observed with higher importance for the IB-LPAI association. The evaluation of vaccine efficacy revealed that 70% of cases of Newcastle disease, 42.86% of cases of infectious bronchitis and 26.31% of cases of LPAI subtype H9 were suspected of being ineffective. Conclusion: This work shows the need to have a database for the implementation of a medical prophylaxis programme specific to the epidemiological conditions of these farms. Nucleic acid sequencing to identify circulating serotypes is the next step.
