  • Prospects of Promoting Festival Tourism: A Case study of Khame Jatra in
           Bhaktapur

    • Authors: Lok Nath Dulal
      Pages: 1 - 22
Abstract: Bhaktapur is one of the ancient and the most famous cultural tourist destinations of Nepal. One can observe and have a wonderful experience of tangible and intangible cultural tourism products such as historical, archeological, religious and secular monuments, treasures of arts and crafts and varied indigenous living cultural activities. As the mirrors of Bhaktapur, tangible and intangible cultural heritage reflect the folktales, music and dance, history and traditions, way of life, religious beliefs, costumes and customary laws, dress/ ornaments, social harmony, joys and fears, dreams and sorrows, and the feeling of unity in the diversity of people. The people of Bhaktapur annually celebrate different colourful festivals and Jatras on the special auspicious days. Rest of them, Khame Jatra is a renowned cultural heritage and a very important cultural tourism product. Khame is a male buffalo which is taken out in Open Street for the procession during the ninth day of Dashain festival. It is an archetypal Jatra which is considered a hallmark of indigenous cultural identity and a popular cultural tourism product of Bhaktapur. But, this Jatra is still unexposed; hence it is a hidden or veiled festival. It is necessary recognizing the prominence of Khame Jatra as a prominent tourism product and a prodigious agent for preservation of traditional culture and an effective means of cultural renovation, national identity building and economic growth. The concerned stakeholders and the governing bodies should pay adequate attention for the protection and promotion of this Jatra as a prominent tourism product

  • Dialectics in Worshipping of Samai Mai Temple at Tilaurakot (Kapilvastu)

    • Authors: Poonam R.L. Rana
      Pages: 23 - 40
Abstract: The aim of this paper is to explore the basic trend of dialectics in worshipping of Samai Mai temple at Tilaurkot, Kapilvastu. This cannot be denied that the dialectics or contradictory approaches might be thought to be the basic tenet of ameliorations. Dialectics here is used as debate/contradictions in behavioral patterns of the people in a specific culture. (People coming to worship Samai Mai) Dialectics is used as a gap between ideas and cultural beliefs and behavior of people in the Hindu cultural context. Celebrating worshipping is dialectic materialistic in nature it has great significance, bio-psychologically, socio-culturally, adaptive as well as perceived as religious. Religion is a ‘social glue’ that offers individuals purpose and meaning in their lives. That is why people believe in deities either for “Hope” or for “Fear”. They perform religious rituals as an honour to the divine power. Both worshipping and offering devotions, beliefs in cultural context are determined by their dialectics in it

  • The Temple having Multiple Names and Tantrik Images: Rani Pokhari

    • Authors: Sandhya Khanal Parajuli
      Pages: 41 - 56
Abstract: Rani pokhari lies at the heart of Kathmandu city. It was located at the north eastern boundary of Hanumandhoka royal palace during the medieval period. It was constructed by King Pratap Malla of Kathmandu in N.S. 789/790 (1668/69 C.E.). Its original name is Nhu: pukhu as the king constructed a new pond in the city, which later became famous by the name “Rani pokhari.” Among hundreds of monuments of the Kathmandu valley, Rani pokhari is one, which along with its pleasant beauty, reflects marvelous art and architecture of medieval history. It is a monument dedicated to a deceased son by a parent with the wish of absolution of his soul. The granthakut styled deval established at the center of Rani pokhari is popular by several names as Balgopaleshwor, Yamaleshwor, Harishankari and Gaurishankar. A number of stone and terracotta images placed inside and outside the temple of Rani pokhari, and its premises reveals the essence of utmost tantrism mingled art of the medieval period. Detailed study about the naming of a deval, specific motive of placement of various images and their features have not been conducted yet. In this context, what is the temple actually named after' Which images are established in or around the temple and at the pond premises' What does the specific design of a pond and its iconographic features reveal' are the questions raised in this research and the answer is intended to be addressed. To find out the actual name of a temple, the identification of its images and the purpose of their placement along with their features is an objective of this research. This is mainly an explorative and qualitative research based upon the historical documents and monuments located at the site. Survey of site, collection of inscriptions, myths, legends, photography of images, interview with the concerned authorities and a review of related literature are the methodologies applied for the research. Through various references, it has been known in this article that the actual name of the deval of Rani Pokhari is Parameshwor Parameswori. King Pratap Malla constructed the pond in swastika yantra or mandala design and established syaumya and raudra form of deities for the liberation and eternal peace of his deceased son Chakravertendra Malla, to protect his spirit from wandering, disclosing the fault of tantric symbols engraved in coins and for the protection and welfare of his clan.

  • The Sati System in Nepal: Religious Conviction and Social Complications

    • Authors: Tina Manandhar
      Pages: 57 - 66
Abstract: The practice of widow burning ‘Sati Pratha’ was prevalent in Nepal from the ancient period up to its abolishment during the Rana regime by Prime Minister Chandra Shamsher. The practice was at its apex during the medieval period in Nepal when not only the widow but in some cases mother, slave girls, and even boys were immolated most probably against their wish. This was because most of the religious texts praised it and took it as one of the glorious acts one can perform to sanctify themselves and their lineage. Such religious conviction encouraged social complications and in some cases, such acts were performed to gain political advancements also. This paper tends to analyze the different factors which encouraged/forced innocent women to give up their life and how the cruel act of burning a person gained such popularity among the people. Along with its history to the actions taken in phase-wise for its abolishment in case of Nepal are discussed.
