  • The Effects of Planned Obsolescence Strategies on Dust Bagless Vacuum
Cleaner Designs in the Local Market of Turkey

    • Authors: Merve SEYHAN; H. Güçlü YAVUZCAN
Abstract: The concept of planned obsolescence can be defined as a marketing strategy in which the manufacturers deliberately and consciously design the products to have a shorter lifespan and to make the products less durable. With the consumer society, the need for a new workspace to design products and systems has emerged, and thus the industrial design profession has emerged. In order to increase consumption, products are produced by deciding how long they will be used during the design process. Industrial designers design based on limited functional life design, design for limited repair, and the creation of new needs. This study is mainly about examining the relationship between the planned obsolescence strategy and the discipline of industrial design through the examples of dust bagless vacuum cleaners. For this purpose, a questionnaire consisting of 125 participants was conducted to determine the product group to be studied first. Then, literature research and market research were carried out. The technical components and features of the products of the specified brands were investigated. Planned interviews were made with the R&D managers or industrial design managers of the specified brands. The data obtained as a result of all the researches were classified according to the planned obsolescence types and matrices were formed. According to the data obtained, it is seen that the tendencies towards the planned obsolescence strategy are similar in most of the sampled brands.

  • A STUDY ON UNDERSTANDING THE INFLUENCE OF DIFFERENT DESIGN APPROACHES TO
           DESIGN DEMOCRATIZATION

    • Authors: Doğan Can HATUNOĞLU
Abstract: Since their emergence, design disciplines have been working to offer better living conditions to the masses. Their contexts, processes, and outcomes are shaped according to the social, economic, and political movements and issues. This situation has paved the way for the inclusion of various user groups in the design process. Mainly, enabling open-source environments and developing technology have strengthened the involvement of diverse user groups in the design and have provided continuous development in design democratization. The paper aims to understand better how researchers discuss the concept of democratization within a design context. In order to do this, the paper first explores the meaning and origin of design democratization. Then it examines the related approaches that have emerged over the years in different geographies. As a conclusion of these explorations, the paper emphasizes the importance of social inclusion, diversity, and empowerment in design democratization.

  • Similarities in Wooden Architecture Between Anatolia and Scandinavia

    • Authors: Can Mehmet HERSEK
Abstract: Anatolian wooden architectural heritage may have relations and similarities considering construction techniques with Scandinavian wooden buildings. The “log houses” of Anatolia are mostly situated on the hillsides along the Black Sea region their usage, their plan types and their roof shapes and details quite same. For example our larder type storage buildings which are granaries that called ‘serender and ambar’ are very similar or so close to each other with “Sami Storehouse” of Sweeden or “loft” of Norway (Karpuz, 1999). Also it is very interesting to discover the similarities between the solid log houses which are built in Turkey and in one of the Nordic Countries. So we have to protect this highly valuable common heritage and craftsman skills for transferring this delicate culture to our next generations.

  • Examination Study for the Traditional Houses of the Black Sea Region

    • Authors: Filiz KARAKUŞ; Ekrem Bahadır ÇALIŞKAN
Abstract: People have solved the need for shelter in different ways depending on the conditions of the region they live in. The Turkish house is a type of house with its own characteristics, which was formed in the Anatolian and Rumeli regions. These houses, which have similar characteristics in terms of their main lines, have undergone some changes over a period of approximately five hundred years and different types have been revealed in different countries and regions. The aim of the study is to determine the change in the traditional house typology on the line from the Middle Black Sea to the East Black Sea and to reveal the reasons for this change. The determined buildings were examined in terms of plan type, construction techniques, land layout, protrusion features, whether there is a garden and main entrance/secondary entrance features. These detected features were analyzed by creating various combinations and using the K-means clustering algorithm method to search patterns, which is the most widely used machine learning algorithm for descriptive analysis. With the evaluation and interpretation of the clusters obtained by this method, data on the differences seen in the traditional Black Sea Region houses on the line starting from Samsun to Artvin were obtained. In addition, it has been observed that there are regional plan types and structural systems in the examined areas. Afterwards, an evaluation was made regarding the reasons for these differences. Although various research has been made on the traditional houses of the Black Sea Region, the absence of an analysis comparing the building typology on this line makes this study important.

  • The Importance of Accessibility of Historical Buildings: Historical Ankara
           Train Station Sample

    • Authors: Şule Nur ALTIN; Can GÜNGÖR
Abstract: Accessibility is a concept that should apply to every area where people exist. Each discipline should produce in its field of expertise without ignoring this situation. In this study, it has been argued why accessibility is necessary in the context of architecture and therefore historical buildings. The claim is that architectural designs should be unifying, not divisive, and that every individual has the same rights to participate in social life. The problems we encountered during the implementation of this right and the processes of awareness formation in the world and in our country are discussed. With this study, it is aimed to raise awareness so that cultural assets, which are the most problematic area of accessibility, are accessible to every citizen, without forgetting that each of us is a candidate for disability.

  • AN ANALYSIS OF THE EFFECTS OF CALCIUM ALUMINATE CEMENT ADDITIVE ON
PORCELAIN FORMING AND FINAL PRODUCT PROPERTIES

    • Authors: Mustafa AĞATEKİN; Ferda Tazeoğlu Filiz TAZEOĞLU FİLİZ
Abstract: A key step in artistic production surely involves the selection of materials. Each material has its own unique components and limitations. These limitations also determine basic production processes such as shaping and coloring. Today, these limitations are minimized thanks to optimization and R&D studies in the material industries. Studies on the optimization of materials offer a source for the development of different usage purposes as well as the main usage purposes of the materials and additional properties for the final product.Concrete and cement-derived materials, which used to be associated with modernism and building in the past, have become alternative materials for artistic productions today. However, like every material, cement has some limitations that affect the design processes such as working range, coloring, shaping and physical and chemical resistance of the final product. In this study, the Calcium Aluminate cement produced under the name ISIDAÇ 40, one of the cements produced by ÇİMSA in accordance with the TS EN 14647 standard, and the granular porcelain casting mud produced by ECZACIBAŞI Esan will be mixed in different proportions, and its suitability for the shaping methods used in the field of ceramics and its effects on the products produced will be discussed.

  • A RESEARCH ON SMEs IN TURKEY: SUSTAINABLE PRODUCT DESIGN PRACTICES AND ITS
           EFFECTS ON SMEs

    • Authors: Kevser YETİM; H. Güçlü YAVUZCAN
Abstract: Although it is known that 99.8% of the enterprises in Turkey are SMEs, it is seen in the past studies that, systematic sustainable product design practices were mostly handled by large companies. In this study, it is aimed to examine the awareness of sustainable product design in SMEs, the benefits of sustainable product design practices for SMEs and the problems and needs encountered in the process. In order to follow a systematical method to be conducted on the axis of Turkey, firstly companies were separated in two main classes in terms of consumer products and then categorized on a sectoral basis using the NACE classification system. Finally, cosmetics and cleaning industry, food industry and pharmaceutical industry were identified among fast-moving consumer goods category and electrics-electronics industry and furniture industry were identified among durable consumer goods category. Detailed interviews were conducted with 24 SMEs. Consequently, it was seen that companies consider sustainable design practices as long as they allow economic advantages. They implement sustainability practices mostly if they have a positive impact on the company's image and when the legislation creates a driving force on companies.

  • The Theory of Planned Behaviour and The Factors Affecting Entrepreneurial
Intention: A Study on Architecture Faculty Students in Turkey

    • Authors: Ali AYCI; Esra Betül KINACI, Harun KINACI
Abstract: research topics for academics and policy makers. Researchers have tried to explain entrepreneurial intention with different models and The Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) is the best-known model to explain entrepreneurial intention in entrepreneurship research. In order to find out the factors affecting entrepreneurial intention, different studies have been carried out on different variables. The aim of the research is to reveal the factors affecting the entrepreneurial intentions of individuals from different perspectives and to determine the relationship between them. For this purpose, the demographic characteristics of individuals and TPB were chosen. The city of origin and the city to return to also added as the new variables. Questionnaire method was preferred as the data collection tool in the research, a questionnaire was applied to 81 senior architecture undergraduate students in Turkey and Logistic regression was used as the analysis method. In this direction, it has been examined through three different models in order to observe the effects of both elements separately and together. As a result of the analysis, it was found that individual and situational factors had a higher rate of explaining entrepreneurial intentions. The small sample size seems to be a limitation of the study. Future studies on a large sample group using different variables and statistical methods will make significant contributions to the entrepreneurship ecosystem.

  • Adaptive Reuse of Ankara CerModern Art Gallery Evaluation of Structural
           System

    • Authors: Necdet TORUNBALCI; Hilal GÜNAY
Abstract: The buildings in Türkiye reflecting the impact of industrialization originating from Europe in the 18th century and later are considered industrial heritage today. These buildings that are worth preserving are brought back to the city by the phenomenon of adaptive reuse. However, among important issues to be discussed are seismic loads which bear a great risk for industrial heritage building. Adaptive reuse of such structure focus on the building the design, repair and retrofit of structural systems. While also establishing the link between the old identities of the structures and the present one. In this study, the transformation process of the CerModern building, which is a registered industrial heritage building in Ankara, into Ankara's first modern arts center was evaluated while focusing on structural system design. The CerModern building was reviewed in terms of restoration interventions. The main purpose of the study is to comparatively examine and evaluate the authentic structural system and the designed new structural system applied.
