  • Use of space in Yeşilçam Cinema in the context of symbolization of
           traditional-modern dilemma

    • Authors: Didem AKYOL ALTUN
Abstract: 1960-1975 period of Turkish cinema is accepted as 'Yeşilçam'. These movies have embodied the modernization process of Turkey. Generally, in media and literature, Yeşilçam Cinema has been criticized as being deprived of creativity and are considered to be weak in terms of spatial fiction. Accordingly, few studies are to be found that investigating 'the use of space in the Yeşilçam Cinema' in the related literature. The main purpose of this paper to trace spatial symbols of traditional-modern dilemma’s conflicts in Yeşilçam Cinema. From this point of view, within the scope of this study, 66 movies were selected for a detailed analyse, which have strong signs about space using and traces of modernization critics. The main assertion of this study is that the use of space in Yeşilçam movies was not deprived of fiction and was not randomly selected and also spaces of them strongly represent the modernization discussions of their period.

  • Visual comfort assessment of OLED lighting in an indoor office environment

    • Authors: Ayşe Nihan AVCI; Saadet AKBAY
Abstract: Visual comfort is one of the significant criteria influencing good-quality lighting in an indoor environment. There are various technologies for delivering illumination in indoor installations; three important milestones are incandescent, fluorescent, and LED lighting. Alternative technologies, such as OLED (organic light-emitting diode) lighting, cannot be disregarded by a thorough examination. Few studies have investigated the influence of OLED lighting on visual comfort in terms of merely illuminance level. To this end, this study investigates the influence of OLED lighting conditions on visual comfort, including general comfort parameters—overall comfort, illuminance, brightness ratio, veiling reflections, colour, flicker effect, overall satisfaction—in an indoor office environment. Twelve members from the Faculty of Architecture, Çankaya University, voluntarily participated in the study. A full-scale indoor office environment was designed for the test environment, which was illuminated by OLED lighting (2900 K). An Office Lighting Survey was adopted to assess the general visual comfort of OLED lighting conditions in an indoor office environment. In contrast to earlier lighting studies, this study did not measure any task performance under the lighting condition. Instead, it focused solely on participants’ visual comfort evaluations when exposed to OLED lighting during their everyday routines in an indoor office environment. This study is a preliminary study for further investigations on the doctoral thesis.

  • Usage of bio-based materials in indoor members

    • Authors: Nedim ALİCİ; Berk DALKILIÇ
Abstract: In this paper, it was aimed to bring alternative suggestions to the usage areas of bio-based materials used in interior reinforcement elements and to contribute to the awareness of these materials. In this regard, the design and production stages of bio-based materials used in interior members were examined in detail and explained with examples. In the study, bio-based materials produced from agricultural wastes, marine wastes, and living organisms, indoor equipment; their use as furniture, flooring, and surface coating material was discussed. Within the scope of the study, relevant articles, theses, books and online resources in the literature were used. As a result, it was understood that bio-based materials produced from agricultural and marine natural wastes and living organisms are suitable for indoor use. It was observed that bio-based materials are accessible, applicable and have aesthetic value, and will reduce the energy consumed and the need for raw materials in the production process. It was understood that studies on bio-based materials are mostly concentrated in the category of design researches, therefore, they do not create essential changes in existing production technologies.

  • Adaptation of construction sites to Covid-19 pandemic: Safe construction
site certificate for Turkish construction sector

    • Authors: Arzuhan GÜLTEKİN; Alperen SARI
Abstract: This study aims to determine the measures against the COVID-19 pandemic at construction sites, analyze the implementability of these measures at selected construction sites, and propose a Safe Construction Site Certificate to improve the health of construction sites. Within the context of these aims, a questionnaire was sent through email to 38 site chiefs at residential construction sites in 15 Turkish cities. Using open-ended, semi-structured questions, the COVID-19 pandemic measures taken in the construction work areas, administrative offices, dormitories, and dining halls of construction sites were examined. For the purposes of data collection and analysis, content analysis method and phenomenological approach were employed. It was determined that the COVID-19 pandemic measures were not implemented at certain construction sites, while they were inadequately implemented at others. In addition, it was discovered that the unity of measures could not be achieved in different facilities of the same construction sites and remained on an individual scale. Consequently, to build healthier construction sites by removing the inadequacies identified by the analysis and taking into account the dynamics of the Turkish construction sector and construction sites, a Safe Construction Site Certificate was proposed.

  • Syrian refugees as the victims of urban regeneration: A case study of
           Ankara, Önder and Ulubey neighborhoods

    • Authors: Sezen SAVRAN PENBECİOĞLU
Abstract: The Syrian Civil War compelled vast numbers of Syrians to leave their homeland, and taking advantage of Turkey’s Open Door Policy, millions of Syrians crossed the shared border between 2011 and 2015 in search of refuge. The temporary protection nature of Turkey’s Policy for Syrians prevented the formation of comprehensive socio-spatial policies related to the provision of human rights. Regarding to the right to housing, the lack of government accommodation for refugees meant that the Syrian refugees became a part of Turkey’s existing housing problems, such as squatting and failed urban regeneration projects. The present study reveals different dimensions of housing problems that Syrian refugees encountered such as poor housing conditions, socio-spatial isolation, unaffordability, and forced mobility through the Ankara case. It is argued that living in an area in the process of urban regeneration has exacerbated these multiple housing problems. The research is based on a mixed-method including the analysis of quantitative data, questionnaire with Syrian refugees, semi-structured in-depth interviews with both Syrian refugees and key actors, and participant observations. Field study of the Önder and Ulubey neighborhoods was conducted between 2017 and 2019. The paper concludes with an evaluation of the findings, and an explanation of their potential for use in the future in urban policymaking and planning processes.

  • Public spaces of rural architecture at risk of destruction: Laundries

    • Authors: Ayşegül SONDAŞ; Özlem SAĞIROĞLU DEMİRCİ
Abstract: The basis of rural settlements is the consciousness of doing business together under the influence of production dynamics and the culture of cooperation, sharing and social relations. The daily life, which continues with being together, solidarity and cooperation, develops around the village common room, coffeehouse, mill, bakery, tannery and laundries, which constitute the spaces of social relations together with the residences where the private life takes place and its immediate surroundings. The individuals who make up the community come together for a purpose in these places, both realize the purpose and know, learn, have fun and share by communicating. However, the majority of these spaces are not used as before or are completely out of use due to the differentiation of production dynamics and the updating of comfort conditions in accordance with contemporary living requirements. The places/structures that are out of use, on the other hand, become obsolete day by day, being forgotten by withdrawing from social life and disappearing physically. Within the scope of this study, laundries, which are one of the important representatives of rural architectural heritage and are in the process of disappearing very quickly due to their being out of use today, are the subject. Within the scope of the study, the laundries that were previously documented were determined by making a literature search, and the laundries were documented by conducting a field study in the Seyitgazi district of Eskişehir and Eskigediz district of Kütahya. Brought together to prevent the disappearance of an architectural culture and presented within the scope of typology, comparison and various discussions.

  • Perceptionality of religious buildings in Trabzon’s main pedestrian
           ways

    • Authors: Şeyma YETİM; Demet YILMAZ YILDIRIM
Abstract: Urban identity is the whole of the original physical, cultural, socio-economic and historical characteristics of cities and distinguishing feature of place. On the other hand, urban image is the traces of a city as a result of sense, emotion, thought and perception. In the study, concepts such as urban identity, urban image, landmarks, legibility and serial vision on the basis of pedestrian movement are discussed. In the study, religious buildings are chosen as one of the advantageous building groups in terms of being landmarks that leaves permanent traces in the memory of the user, which can stand out in the urban structure or city silhouette. The study deals with religious buildings in relation to the pedestrian movement in the heavily used Trabzon city center, which contains many historical and new buildings. It is aimed to discuss how religious buildings are perceived during the pedestrian movement. For this purpose, the changing perception of the religious building depending on its location, the physical structure of the road, the visibility of the building, its strength of appearance, continuity and singularity are analyzed. Visual analysis techniques are used in all these analyzes. As a result of the analysis, it is determined whether religious structures are perceived or not. Then, the buildings which have high potential to be a landmark are determined and the reasons that caused these buildings to be perceived as strong and weak are revealed. This showed that being a landmark should have features such as visibility, effective appearance, continuity and singularity as well as positional and formal features in relation to the road. It was concluded that considering these features together in a way that supports each other can create a strong landmarks/sign.

  • T-shaped plan in Bulgarian churches: Ottoman state Kırkkilise sanjak
churches in the late 19th century

    • Authors: Sezgi GİRAY KÜÇÜK
Abstract: This study is about the architecture of the churches designed in the Kırkkilise sanjak belonging to Edirne province of the Ottoman Empire between 1870-1913. This was a period when the Bulgarians in the Ottoman Empire could freely build their churches. The Kırkkilise location was chosen as the focus of the study since it was one of the provinces with the highest Bulgarian population during the aforementioned period. The study's methodology included an analysis and taken from the plan schemes and facades of the churches designed in this period. As a result, it was determined that the T-shaped plan scheme, which extended from the narthex to the north and south, was used in Bulgarian churches in the late 19th century, unlike the plan scheme of other churches. In the same period, this plan scheme was also used in Edirne, located to the west of Kırkkilise (Kırklareli), Bulgaria and Greece which are all situated in the Balkans. The study also uncovered that, a non-Muslim journeyman, Ziyo, played a major role in the formation of non-Muslim architecture in Kırklareli, especially in the design of many Bulgarian churches.
