Authors:Anastasia Gkoliomyti, Christian Dimmer Abstract: In this reflection, we examine co-creation in architectural design by highlighting the significance of undisciplined collaborative practice in addressing real-world needs. In order to challenge misleading assumptions about single authorship and disciplinary expertise, we turn back to 1923 disaster-stricken Tokyo and the work of Kon Wajiro (1888-1973) to uncover the lesser-known co-creators of "his Modernology". We map Kon’s "Relational Ecologies" of undisciplined practice by situating his evolution from artist to ethnographer to architect within his contemporary context. Finally, we use the perspective of "disasters fast and slow", to: 1. connect retrospective discoveries of Modernology in periods of increased awareness of slowly unfolding environmental and social crises, namely in connection to the aftermath of the 1973 oil crisis and the 21st century discourses on the Anthropocene. 2. to exemplify crisis moments as creative of affordances for otherwise unlikely, undisciplined cooperations due to the collapsing of material and immaterial “walls”.
Authors:Fernanda Vierno de Moura Abstract: The Barredo Urban Renewal Study, in Oporto, is within the context of the revision of the modern movement and demonstrates the importance of valuing intangible heritage, intrinsic to the social debate at the time, for the recovery of tangible estate, which provided the emancipation of the so-called “urban heritage” and its recognition as a historical-cultural product. The project's methodology encompasses democratic participation in decision-making processes and sought to solve housing problems by keeping residents in the historic city. The Study by Fernando Távora will influence the delineation of the basic principles of the SAAL process from 1974-76 and symbolizes for Portugal the first expression of the concept of integrated urban rehabilitation. Of the architect's vast work, this one represents the first manifestation of a more conservative approach of intervention in urban space, a concept that would develop into an even broader conception in the 1980s.
Authors:Vitório Leite, Catarina Ribeiro Abstract: The city is a balanced ecosystem of tolerance and conflict, but its current forms of representation, construction, and analysis do not always reflect or consider this delicate immateriality that enables our life together. There is a parallelism between material and immaterial phenomena, which is only disrupted by urban processes, such as those we had the opportunity to know in three neighbourhoods of Maia: Bajouca, Sobreiro, and Anta neighbourhoods. Where inclusive and transformative activities bring together various actors in the construction of urbanity. In this article, we register and analyse these processes of collective creation and transformation using a combined method of close observation and mapping: the participatory method known as “walkthrough”. We observe and analyse the practice of the three distinct processes, and the mapping on a common proposition tool for the city council: Geographic Information System (GIS) software. We adopt this methodological dual perspective: to document and showcase the collective actions in the three different contexts, and to reflect on the combination of these usually separate methods and tools, and how they can contribute to understanding the territory and to spatialize all the challenges, ideas, and actors in planning.
Authors:Bernardo Amaral Abstract: This article analyzes the practice of two contemporary architecture organizations from Brazil and Spain, working mainly with right-to-housing movements. The influence of political ideals and principles such as the democratic participation through assemblies and non-hierarchical labor relations will shape their entire work structure, both internally as well as in the relation with the future dwellers and the construction workers. Through a comparative ethnography, based on participant observation and semi-structured interviews, this paper will take a closer look at their work routine, with the goal of characterizing how the ideals of self-management and cooperativism are integrated in their work protocols. This research aims to contribute to a deeper understanding of the relationship between political militancy and architectural practice.
