Abstract: Ezio Raimondi, nel suo esemplare libretto Ombre e figure. Longhi, Arcangeli e la critica d’arte, del 2010, ha tracciato, da una postazione ad un tempo interna ed esterna al complesso sviluppo della critica d’arte italiana del Novecento, una testimonianza che non deve sfuggire a chi vuole ancora riflettere sul rapporto tra il lavoro artistico e il luogo. Ezio Raimondi, in his exemplary book of 2010, Ombre e figure. Longhi, Arcangeli e la critica d’arte, has traced, from a position at once internal and external to the complex development of 20th century Italian art criticism, a testimonial account that should not be overlooked by anyone still wanting to reflect upon the relationship between artistic endeavour and place.

Abstract: È necessario che l’uomo ridefinisca il proprio posto nel mondo, avendo da tempo abbandonato il centro e trovandosi ormai al margine. Unico tra i viventi a impiegare le forze naturali giocando a suo vantaggio, ne ha perso il controllo. Gli sconvolgimenti climatici, gli squilibri economici con le conseguenti grandi migrazioni sono chiari segni di tutto ciò. Per sopravvivere è necessario un cambio radicale di paradigma fondato sull’etica della virtù, unico modo per dare una forma armoniosa alla propria vita. It is necessary for man to redefine his place in the world, since he has long abandoned its centre and now finds himself at the margins. The only living being to employ natural forces to his advantage, he has now lost control of them. Climate upheavals and economic instability with its resulting great migrations, are clear signs of this. Survival requires a radical paradigm shift based on virtue ethics, which is the only way to harmoniously shape our lives.

Abstract: Attraverso lo sguardo insistito sull’Emilia Romagna, rappresentata nei suoi diversi paesaggi dall’Appennino alla costa, Avati racconta l’Italia intera, facendone lo sfondo attivo, eloquente, di una narrazione condotta da una prospettiva letteralmente nostalgica, nella quale il ‘dolore del viaggio’ e lo sguardo ‘da lontano’ che sempre ne consegue, diventano preziosi strumenti di conoscenza. Through his insistent gaze on Emilia Romagna, represented in its various landscapes from the Apennines to the coast, Avati narrates the whole of Italy, making it the active, eloquent backdrop of a narrative that develops from a literally nostalgic perspective, in which the ‘sorrow of the journey’ and the gaze ‘from afar’ that always follows it, become precious tools of knowledge.

Abstract: Nel 2008 Mario Botta viene incaricato di progettare un nuovo stabilimento termale a Baden, cittadina svizzera a nord ovest di Zurigo nello stesso sito dove sorgevano delle antiche terme romane, proprio lungo il fiume Limmat. Senza ricorrere alla mimetizzazione, Botta dà vita a una natura artificiata che è sintesi tra elemento naturale ed elemento storico-culturale. Mario Botta was commissioned in 2008 to design a new spa in Baden, a Swiss town to the north-west of Zurich, on the same site where an ancient Roman bath once stood, on the banks the Limmat river. Without attempting to blend in with the background, Botta creates an artificial nature that is a fusion of natural and cultural-historical elements.

Abstract: La torre di avvistamento di Caminada per il Parco naturalistico di Goldau è un dispositivo per l’osservazione del paesaggio. Ma lungo la salita attraverso il corpo della torre di legno, la relazione tra l’uomo e la natura non è più limitata al binomio spettatore/osservatore. Ogni tappa del percorso è un invito a riconsiderare i rapporti tra le parti; a leggere ciò che ci circonda come una trama di esistenze in relazione. Caminada’s watchtower for the Goldau Nature Park is a device for observing the landscape. Yet along the ascent through the body of the wooden tower, the relationship between man and nature is no longer limited to the spectator/observer binomial. Each stage of the climb becomes an invitation to reconsider the relationships between the parts, to read what surrounds us as a web of related existences.

- Miller & Maranta Architekten – Rinnovo e ampliamento del Vecchio Ospizio

Abstract: La lettura, tra Storia e analogia, del Passo del San Gottardo è il dato di partenza imprescindibile del progetto di Miller & Maranta per il rinnovamento del Vecchio Ospizio San Gottardo. I progettisti affidano al disegno della copertura, un tetto a falda dalla geometria atipica, la ridefinizione morfologica, l’espressività e il contenuto simbolico dell’Ospizio, generando una ramificazione di significati che conducono l’architettura verso interpretazioni non scontate. The reading, both in terms of history and analogy, of the Gotthard Pass, is the inevitable starting point of Miller & Maranta’s design for the renovation of the Old St. Gotthard Hospice. The architects entrust the morphological redefinition, expressiveness and symbolic content of the Hospice to the design of the roof, pitched and with an atypical geometrical shape, thus generating a ramification of meanings that lead the architecture toward unexpected interpretations.

Abstract: Con i progetti dello Spaziu Mantinum, una piazza/teatro aperta sul Mar Tirreno che collega la parte alta della città di Bastia al suo porto vecchio, e l’Aldilonda, aerea promenade che corre a sbalzo lungo le mura dell’antica cittadella, Isabelle Buzzo e Jean-Philippe Spinelli finiscono per sublimare materia e spirito della città e della Corsica tutta, citando – forse inconsapevolmente – sequenze e inquadrature di un vecchio film che Luis Buñuel girò in città nel 1955. With their designs for the Spaziu Mantinum, a square/theatre open to the view of the Tyrrhenian Sea connecting the upper part of the city of Bastia to its old port, and the Aldilonda, an aerial promenade cantilevering along the walls of the old citadel, Isabelle Buzzo and Jean-Philippe Spinelli end up sublimating the matter and spirit of the city and Corsica as a whole, quoting – perhaps unconsciously – sequences and shots from an old film that Luis Buñuel shot in the city in 1955.

Abstract: Nel 2016 lo studio Caruso St John progetta per l’organo della Cattedrale di Canterbury un luogo della musica ma ancor prima del silenzio, che nella sintassi musicale assume la forma della pausa. Una sospensione che, se nella musica è predisposizione all’attesa, anticipazione del suono e promessa di un inizio, nel progetto della Cattedrale diventa interruzione fisica, una cesura che si realizza come distacco da terra. Il lavoro sullo spazio di Caruso St John nasce da una meditata ricerca sul contesto con un esercizio costante che non si esaurisce solo nell’analisi storica e architettonica ma che, per evocazione di immagini affini, include nella lettura del luogo tutti i campi dell’arte. In 2016, the Caruso St John studio designed for the organ of Canterbury Cathedral a place of music but even more so of silence, which in musical syntax is expressed by the pause. A suspension which in music is a readiness to wait, the anticipation of sound and the promise of a beginning, and that in the project for the Cathedral becomes a physical interruption, a break that is accomplished as a detachment from the ground. The work on the space carried out by Caruso St John derives from thoughtful research on the context through a constant exercise that is not limited to historical and architectural analysis but, by evocation of related images, includes all fields of art in the interpretation of the place.

Abstract: Nel quartiere industriale e residenziale di Little Haiti, non troppo distante dalla costa della North Bay di Miami, Barozzi e Veiga intervengono per la fondazione Oolite Art con un villaggio di case e laboratori destinati ad artisti. Una sorta di cittadella delle arti, costituita da un complesso di torri raccolte dentro un recinto perimetrale, risolve il programma per un’augurata nuova schiera di protagonisti della Visual Art di Miami. In the industrial and residential district of Little Haiti, not too far from the shores of Miami's North Bay, Barozzi and Veiga designed a cluster of artist accommodations and workshops for the Oolite Art Foundation. A sort of citadel of the arts, consisting of a complex of towers enclosed within a perimeter wall, supports the programme of a hoped-for new lineup of the exponents of Miami's Visual Art scene.

Abstract: Nella superfice interna della caldera dell’Isola di Fogo a Capo Verde, gli OTO Arquitectos hanno realizzato nel 2013 l’edificio ospitante la sede generale del Parque Natural do Fogo. una forma nata dal luogo per il luogo, una nuova topografia, capace di alterare la relazione tra la figura e lo sfondo, grazie alla quale si vive quotidianamente la sublime esperienza dell’attesa e della distruzione. Ad un anno dalla sua inaugurazione, l’attesa diviene realtà e l’edificio viene completamente distrutto dalla più grande eruzione che mai si ricordi a memoria d’uomo nell’Isola. In 2013, OTO Arquitectos constructed the building for the general headquarters of the Parque Natural do Fogo in the inner surface of the caldera of Fogo Island in Cape Verde. A form derived from the place and for the place, a new topography capable of altering the relationship between the figure and the background, thanks to which the sublime experience of both waiting and of destruction can be experienced on a daily basis. One year after its inauguration, the waiting became reality when the building was completely destroyed by the largest eruption of which there is memory on the Island.

Abstract: Il progetto alle cave di Jinyun espande la riflessione sulla agopuntura architettonica, avviata da Xu Tiantian e DnA_ Design and Architecture con la prolifica esperienza delle Songyang Stories, concentrandosi sulla risignificazione di spazi preesitenti, intervenendo con raffinati dettagli, ripetuti con ossessiva precisione, su un cluster di nove aule, differenti per dimensioni e vocazione d’uso, nel paesaggio estrattivo in abbandono della provincia di Zhejiang. The project at Jinyun Quarries broadens the reflection on architectural acupuncture, initiated by Xu Tiantian and DnA_ Design and Architecture with the fecund experience of the Songyang Stories, by focusing on the re-ascription of meaning of pre-existing spaces, intervening with refined details, repeated with obsessive precision, on a cluster of nine halls, different in size and intended usage, in the abandoned mining landscape of the province of Zhejiang.

Alberto Giacometti first entered his Parisian atelier on rue Hippolyte-Maindron in 1927, where he would live and work until his death, and as the years went by, the atelier would live, work, and eventually die with him, always embodying the ultimate expression of its occupant’s personality and work.

Abstract: L’articolo è una lettura critica della Piazza Sebastiano Satta a Nuoro di Costantino Nivola, indagata nel suo profondo rapporto con i luoghi e nel suo essere, senza distinzione alcuna, un intervento urbanistico, architettonico e artistico. Ma anche nella straordinaria capacità dell’artista di cogliere l’arcaico come energia vitale, universale capacità di comprensione e non come elemento relegato nel fondo della coscienza, inoperante e dimenticato. This article is a critical interpretation of Costantino Nivola’s Piazza Sebastiano Satta in Nuoro, explored in its deep relationship with its surrounding context and in its being, indistinctly, an urbanistic, architectural and artistic intervention. But also in the artist’s extraordinary ability to grasp the archaic as a vital energy, as a universal capacity for understanding and not merely as an element that is relegated to the depths of consciousness, idle and forgotten.

Abstract: La villa progettata da Giuseppe Pizzigoni per lo scultore bergamasco Claudio Nani nei pressi della Val Seriana, a venti chilometri da Bergamo Alta, costituisce l’approdo finale di una lunga ricerca, durata più di trent’anni, che l’architetto incentra sul tema dell’abitare ove il rapporto di corrispondenza tra il luogo e il progetto, tra la topografia e la tipologia dell’architettura guida l’atto fondativo del comporre. The villa designed by Giuseppe Pizzigoni for the sculptor from Bergamo Claudio Nani in the Val Seriana, twenty kilometres from Bergamo Alta, represents the final outcome of a long research, lasting more than thirty years, carried out by the architect on the theme of dwelling, in which the relationship between place and project, between topography and the typology of architecture guides the founding act of architectural composition.

Abstract: La riflessione sull’edilizia mediterranea ad un solo piano, presentata da Adalberto Libera in un saggio pubblicato nel 1952 sulla rivista «Architetti», costituisce la base teorica per il progetto del Quartiere Tuscolano III, l’Unità di Abitazione Orizzontale, aprendo un «campo di studi di estremo interesse [...] che si presenta alla nostra attenzione con la sua vitalità e i suoi problemi di importanza nazionale». Chi prosegue e sperimenta questo ambito è Giuliana Genta, collaboratrice di Libera negli anni del secondo dopoguerra, nei progetti di residenze ‘in superficie’. The reflection on single-storey Mediterranean housing, presented by Adalberto Libera in an essay published in 1952 in the magazine Architetti, constitutes the theoretical basis for the project of the Quartiere Tuscolano III, the Horizontal Housing Unit, opening a “field of studies of great interest [...] that presents itself to our attention with its vitality and its issues of national importance”. Who continues to experiment in this field is Giuliana Genta, a collaborator of Libera in the years after World War II, in the projects for ‘surface’ residences.

Abstract: I lavori che a più riprese, nella sua cinquantennale attività, Gian Franco Di Pietro ha condotto sulla Valtiberina rivelano l’originalità e la ricchezza intellettuale della sua concezione nel rapporto tra architettura, insediamenti urbani e luogo. Un punto di vista che Di Pietro ricompone in un peculiare approccio unitariamente e intenzionalmente progettuale, a scala urbana, urbanistica e propriamente architettonica, tanto nella ricerca che nella didattica, nell’impegno politico-culturale e nella pratica professionale. The works which Gian Franco Di Pietro carried out on the Valtiberina, on various occasions during in his fifty years of activity, reveal the originality and intellectual depth of his conception of the relationship between architecture, urban settlements and place. A perspective that Di Pietro recomposes in a peculiar approach that is unified and intentionally design-oriented, applied on an urban, urban planning and specifically architectural scale, as much in his research as in his teaching, in his political-cultural commitment and his professional practice.

Abstract: L’opera di Kiefer Venice Cycle è il terzo atto di una eterna ri-scrittura del Palazzo Ducale di Venezia. Pensata e misurata per la Sala dello Scrutinio, luogo deputato dell’elezione dei dogi, essa è un magnifico «solstizio veneziano», una pausa del cammino del sole a catturare la sospensione dello spazio e del tempo dentro il vortice della storia. Kiefer’s Venice Cycle is the third act in an eternal re-writing of the Doge’s Palace in Venice. Conceived and proportioned for the Sala dello Scrutinio, the place where doges were elected, it is a magnificent “Venetian solstice”, a pause in the sun’s path to capture the suspension of space and time within the vortex of history.
