  • La perdita del sacro timore

    • Authors: Susanna Tamaro
      Pages: 18 - 21
Nature speaks to us of beauty, of a world that exists and lives under the sign of complexity. And although nature has become an ideological totem before which we can offer as sacrifice our deepest anxieties and fears, the idea that environmental degradation is in some way related to the degradation of our soul is lacking.

Culture is agriculture: in the precise sense that cultural tradition is simultaneously also translation, sedimentation, waiting for the seed to macerate in the soil and, in due time, to bear fruit. Italians are still a peasant people; Italian industrial society may even appear as being more solid than others, but this is because it rests on a past that does not pass away, on the positive and yet historically unfulfilled seeds of the great Mediterranean culture.

  • La crescita, la metamorfosi

    • Authors: Paolo Portoghesi
      Pages: 28 - 33
Architecture is not only an ensemble of objects, but a sort of language that not only lives intangibly in our memory and our brain, but also aspires to participate in the organic form of living beings. Architecture grows and reproduces as a set of experiences, ideas, projects, and types that are transformed as they disseminate, in the same way as plants are reproduced through the union of male and female principles communicating by proximity, with the help of insects, of the wind.

  • Talponia, Rovine, Un Mondo

    • Authors: Aimaro Isola
      Pages: 34 - 41
On the backdrop of every human endeavour there is a glimpse of the idea of a primordial nature, of a lost paradise to long for or to seek in order to re-enchant both places and Time. The gaze on nature and on what surrounds us shapes our identities, our knowledge, our stories, our techniques: poetry and song derive from this gaze.

  • Cappella a Unterliezheim, Germania

    • Authors: Riccardo Butini
      Pages: 42 - 53
The chapel appears as a 'found object' and carries out an intense dialogue with the context in which it is located, demonstrating an unexpected capacity for 'enrootment'; a close connection, suspended between the transcendent dimension of natural space and the rationality of a precise building technique, that of the exterior which proceeds, through sublimation, into the interior.

  • Padiglione espositivo, Saya Park, Corea del Sud

    • Authors: Fabio Fabbrizzi
      Pages: 54 - 65
In many respects, the whole of human history is built around the connection that humans have established with the natural world. In archaic sensibility, the forest has always played a central role, bearing an ancestral significance that is dense with values and meanings, which in different ways still persist in some successful contemporary works. This is the case, for example, of the Saya Park exhibition pavilion in South Korea, which succeeds in coalescing, in an extraordinarily poetic dimension, a sensitive interpretation of the many themes offered by nature in relation to space and its architectural definition.

  • Jesús Aparicio. Casa dell’orizzonte, Salamanca, Spagna

    • Authors: Brunella Guerra
      Pages: 66 - 77
The Casa del Horizonte built by Jesús Maria Aparicio in Campo Charro, Salamanca, is the perfect synthesis of his research: an architectural box engaged in an intense and subtle dialogue with the vast landscape of the Salamancan dehesa. Whereas to the north it evokes the Castilian cuevas, to the south the house is reduced to the essential: a roof, a floor, and in the middle the horizon. The human figure is always a measure of the landscape and of architecture.

  • DnA_Design and Architecture. Hakka Indenture Museum, Zhejiang, Cina

    • Authors: Fabrizio Arrigoni
      Pages: 78 - 89
The Hakka Indenture Museum is a work that reveals the essential conceptual elements that underlie the way in which atelier DnA_Design and Architecture operates; among them: the context, always understood as res-singularis, as a unique and unrepeatable physical-environmental resource, the existing condition as nourishment for the project, a careful attention to the phenomenality of things and to the memories they carry with them, compositional writing as a subtle exercise on typological matrices, technical-artisanal implementation as outstanding cultural evidence, and the vivid feeling of a social work ethic.

  • Tatiana Bilbao, Dellekamp Arquitectos. Ruta del Peregrino, Messico

    • Authors: Alberto Pireddu
      Pages: 90 - 101
The article presents a critical interpretation of the architectures disseminated throughout the Ruta del Peregrino in the state of Jalisco in Mexico. The wilderness of the places and the popular nature of the walk offer the starting point for a reflection on the theme of analogy, understood according to the interpretation of the French poet and writer René Daumal, and for a comparison with the Sacred Mountains according to the points of view, in some ways complementary, of Aldo Rossi and Giovanni Testori.

The ancient illustrated cadaster Stati, domini, città, terre e castella dei serenissimi duchi e prencipi Della Rovere tratti al naturale by Francesco Mingucci da Pesaro is the inventory of the Barberini family's possessions in which, in 1626, the painter from Pesaro described the character of the hillside villages in the area between the Marchigian Apennines and the Adriatic Sea, emphasising the connection and correspondence of urban settlements to the morphology of the land.

  • Kaija e Heikki Siren. Casa e padiglione a Lingonsö

    • Authors: Chiara De Felice
      Pages: 114 - 125
All the parts of the small cottage designed by the Sirens on the Lingonsö island bare the rules imposed by Nature on the building. The platform resumed from the traditional constructive techniques is the element that resolves the connection with the soil and the site. The cleverness of the designers transforms the element from functional to symbolic, turning the platform into a stage for daylife. The Pavillon synthetically reveals the same scheme where the platform draws a horizontal line in continuity with the sea and the boundary of the space is Nature itself.

           Dobravi, Slovenia

    • Authors: Edoardo Cresci
      Pages: 126 - 137
In 1973, in his role as director of the Regional Institute for the Protection of Monuments, Oton Jugovec designed the floating roof for the archaeological findings at the chapel of Saint Michael in Otok pri Dobravi, in Lower Carniola. Working with type, archetype and space, the Slovenian architect erected a new, iconic ‘cabin’ that emanates the force and purity of a poem written for this land.

  • Dimitri Pikionis.

Towards the end of his career, Pikionis accepted the commission for designing a children playground, in which he returned to the themes of the project for the Arcopolis. The Filothei playground is a sort of analogous Arcadia, where nature and architecture are still caught in an embrace which a distracted modernity is no longer capable of grasping. Doric archaicisms offer the surreal epiphany of the primitive hut and are reflected in the Mediterranean interpretation of a Japan dreamed of and imagined as close by and necessary.

  • Alberto Ponis. Casa Gostner, Costa Paradiso, Sardegna

    • Authors: Elias Terzitta
      Pages: 150 - 161
Casa Gostner is nestled between two granite spurs and stands out against the landscape with the twofold purpose of sheltering its inhabitants and presiding over its natural surroundings. The house, among Alberto Ponis’s best-known works, plays an important role among the 20th-century architectures that have contributed to define the archetypal holiday-home.

  • Ruina Montium: l’oro di Roma nelle miniere di Las Médulas

    • Authors: Alberto Ghezzi y Alvarez
      Pages: 162 - 173
Located in the northwest of the Iberian peninsula, among the chestnut-covered hills of the comarca of Bierzo, halfway between Castile and Galicia, the gold mines of Las Médulas offer a unique documentation of direct landscape transformation by the Romans using the ruina montium technique described by Pliny the Elder in his Naturalis Historia.

  • Heinrich Tessenow. Avvicinamenti e progetti iconici

    • Authors: Francesco Collotti
      Pages: 174 - 181
Tessenow is known in Italy for the Italian version of Hausbau und dergleichen. An accurate and necessary work of editing and critical reconstruction which has updated our knowledge of the German architect was conducted by Martin Boesch for the Academy of Architecture of the University of Italian Switzerland. Heinrich Tessenow is considered one of the most significant German architects of the early decades of the 20th century and is usually associated with designs of small houses for workers, artisans, and the petite bourgeoisie which, through their simple, square forms, lack of decoration, and carefully controlled proportions, mark the landscape with their discreet yet distinctive presence.

  • Scenografia per Moby Dick alla Prova

    • Authors: Antonella Gallo
      Pages: 182 - 189
A powerful demonstration of what theatre can 'make us see' is offered by the show produced by the dell'Elfo theatre company under the direction of Elio De Capitani, who chose to stage, under the title Moby Dick alla Prova, Orson Welles' theatrical 'adaptation' of Melville's novel Moby Dick. As recalled by De Capitani, Orson Welles “preferred to give the public neither sea, nor whales, nor ships”. In this obstinate ambition lies the feat itself, because the attempt to transform a polyphonic novel such as Moby Dick into a theatrical play is tantamount to hunting the White Whale.
