It brought together some of the most influential European architects of the time, such as Le Corbusier, E. Mendelsohn, W. Gropius and H. Poelzig, together with other important names of the Soviet scene, such as the famous Vesnin brothers, I. Zholtovsky, V. Shchuko and B. Iofan. Iofan. The competition, decided in favour of a group of Soviet architects led by Iofan himself, led to a series of opposing reactions led by Le Corbusier. From there, our goal will be none other than to recover some of these important works in order to put them in relation and try to contextualize the harsh reactions of European architects against the contest result.ResumenEntre 1931 y 1935 el concurso para el Palacio de los Soviets de Moscú fue, sin lugar a dudas, uno de los eventos arquitectónicos más importantes del siglo XX. En él se dieron cita algunos de los arquitectos europeos más influyentes del momento, como es el caso de Le Corbusier, E. Mendelsohn, W. Gropius y H. Poelzig; junto a otros importantes nombres del panorama soviético, como los célebres hermanos Vesnin, I. Zholtovsky, V. Shchuko y B. Iofan. El concurso, resuelto en favor de un grupo de arquitectos soviéticos encabezados por el propio Iofan, derivó en toda una serie de reacciones contrarias lideradas por Le Corbusier. A partir de ahí, nuestro objetivo no será otro que el de recuperar algunos de estos importantes trabajos para así ponerlos en relación y tratar de contextualizar las duras reacciones de los arquitectos europeos contra el resultado del concurso. Authors:Manuel Ferrer Sala Pages: 20 - 37 Abstract: ResumenEl texto analiza la comprensión de lo monumental en la construcción de la ciudad en la obra de Aldo Rossi, que inicia en su visita a Moscú en 1951 y que desarrolla con la lectura de la obra de Adolf Loos. La hipótesis que propone el estudio es demostrar que esta lectura de la arquitectura monumental en Rossi, y que en Loos encontramos en sus proyectos para Viena, entre 1909 y 1912, nos ayuda a entender la mirada sobre la ciudad que comparten estos autores, cuya construcción definen desde “otra” monumentalidad. The text studies the presence of the monumentality in the city construction in the work of Aldo Rossi, which begins with his visit to Moscow in 1951 and has a continuity in his reading of the work of Adolf Loos. The hypothesis proposed by the study, is to demonstrate that this comprehension of monumental architecture in Rossi, that we find in the Loos projects for Vienna between 1909 and 1912, helps us to understand a view of the city that these authors share and whose construction they define from another kind of monumentality.

Its rich and plural fundamentals established singular relationships between classical and modern cultures, which transcends their historical moment and present new topics for analysis and reflection. To know and appreciate its architecture, we will use the journeys of the professionals who came to Rome from all over the world to participate in the International Congress of Architects in 1935, considering the Congress as a space of opportunity for that reflection, and taking the visits around Rome scheduled by the organizers as a source of the architectural and urban interests of its time, and a reflection of the trends that were stirring then in Italy.ResumenEl periodo entre 1922 y 1943 —el llamado ventenio fascista— fue una época fecunda y creativa en la arquitectura italiana. Sus bases ricas y plurales establecieron relaciones singulares entre el mundo cultural clásico y el moderno, que trascienden su momento histórico y plantean en nues-tros días nuevos temas de análisis y reflexión. Para conocer y valorar su arquitectura y su modelo urbano, nos serviremos del viaje al que fueron llevados los profesionales que de todo el mundo llegaron a Roma para participar en el Congreso Internacional de Arquitectos en 1935, considerando el Congreso como un espacio de oportunidad para esa reflexión y tomando las visitas a la ciudad programadas por los organizadores como fuente de los intereses arquitectónicos y urbanos de su tiempo, reflejo de las tendencias que se agitaban entonces en Italia.

A research stay at the TU Delft Faculty of Architecture allowed to visit and study the building in detail and to consult the three archives that describe it (Bishopric of Rotterdam, Municipal Archive of The Hague and Aldo+Hannie van Eyck Foundation) with the purpose of getting access to the graphic documentation as a whole —mostly unpublished— and being able to develop a well-argued architectural interpretation and criticism. In this sense, in parallel to the progressive description and understanding of the building, the paper relates the architectural design of Pastoor Van Ars with some of the essential concepts of van Eyck’s theoretical discourse, such as the twin phenomena or the principle of relativity, as well as with a unique and thorough treatment of natural light.ResumenLa iglesia católica Pastoor Van Ars representa uno de los proyectos más brillantes y en cierto modo desconocidos de Aldo van Eyck. Una estancia de investigación en la Escuela de Arquitectura de la Universidad de Delft permitió visitar y estudiar de manera pormenorizada el edificio y consultar los tres archivos que lo describen (Obispado de Róterdam, Archivo Municipal de La Haya y Aldo + Hannie van Eyck Foundation) con el propósito de acceder al conjunto de la documentación gráfica del proyecto —mayoritariamente inédita— y poder abordar una interpretación y crítica arquitectónica argumentadas. En este sentido, en paralelo a la progresiva descripción y comprensión de la obra, el artículo relaciona la solución arquitectónica de Pastoor Van Ars con algunos de los conceptos esenciales del discurso teórico de van Eyck, como el fenómeno dual o el principio de relatividad, así como con un singular y meditado tratamiento de la luz natural. El período desarrollista consiguiente, liderado por el dictador Sarit Thanarat, dio lugar una rápida industrialización del país, a cuya modernización el sistema bancario debería dar respuesta. Una extensa red de sucursales bancarias y edificios de oficinas se expandiría por todos los rincones del país. Se demuestra cómo la confluencia entre las demandas de la arquitectura corporativa y las aspiraciones de representación nacional darían lugar a un estilo arquitectónico específico que se nutriría de la abstracción de motivos historicistas propios del New Formalism norteamericano y, especialmente, la obra de Minoru Yamasaki. During the Cold War, the Kingdom of Thailand aligned with the United States of America in its fight against the international spread of communism. The rapid industrialisation of the country, where the development of a modern banking system played a vital role, was led by dictator Sarit Thanarat. An extensive network of bank branches and office buildings spread to every corner of the country. It is analysed how the confluence between the demands of modern office buildings and the local aspirations of representation gave rise in Thailand to a singular architectural style that drew from the abstraction of vernacular motifs, in line with international trends such as the American New Formalism and, particularly, the works of Minoru Yamasaki.
Authors:Isabel María de Cárdenas Maestre Pages: 88 - 105 Abstract: The aim of this work is to establish the evolution in the treatment of vegetation, represented by these two cases: from the introduction of the physical plant, in the mid-eighteenth century, to its non-naturalistic representation, applied on the walls, at the end of the nineteenth century, which could account the multiple interpretation, symbolization and appropriation of vegetation have meant in modern culture and architecture. By referring in this work to vegetation or green, we are actually moving on two planes, between phenomenology and spirit. The introduction of the vegetal reference in the artistic or architectural work in particular, is a human construct, therefore, is not a natural one. This differentiation, apparently confusing, develops at the final disambiguation, around 1900, when the clearly artificial character of the artistic work and which confronted the problematic relations between culture and the natural are eventually understood. From this point we work on the introduction of vegetation, vital, exuberant, full of optimism, rich in symbolism and the way in which artists and architects understood and used it.ResumenEl objetivo de este trabajo es establecer el modo en que se produjo la evolución en el tratamiento de la vegetación, que representan estos dos casos, desde la introducción del elemento vegetal físico a mediados del siglo XVIII, a su representación no naturalista, aplicada sobre los muros, a finales del XIX. Esto explicaría la multiplicidad de significados que la interpretación, simbolización y apropiación de la vegetación han supuesto en la cultura y la arquitectura modernas. El término «verde» en este trabajo, se plantea en planos paralelos entre fenomenología y creación del espíritu. Esta alusión a lo vegetal, ya sea en la obra artística o en la arquitectura en particular, hace referencia a un constructo humano, es decir, no natural. La diferencia, que podría parecer confusa, encuentra su desenlace hacia 1900, cuando se asumió finalmente carácter claramente artificial de la obra artística, que incorporaba las complejas relaciones entre la cultura y lo natural. Desde aquí se profundiza en el problema de la introducción de lo vegetal, exuberante, vital, lleno de optimismo, rico en simbología, y la manera en que los artistas y arquitectos lo comprendieron y utilizaron. Curtis. Después de la publicación de la primera edición (1982), apareció una segunda (1987) con un prefacio y capítulo al final sobre la arquitectura reciente. En la tercera edición (1996), el contenido sufrió una revisión y expansión; una integración de nuevas investigaciones en su discurso narrativo sin precedentes en la historiografía de la arquitectura moderna. Aunque la arquitectura moderna de países fuera de Europa y los Estados Unidos ya aparecía en la primera edición, no es hasta la tercera que Curtis cumple con su objetivo de mostrar el significado de la arquitectura moderna en partes remotas del mundo. Este artículo presenta la historia de la escritura del libro y propone analizar los cambios introducidos como objetivos que Curtis cumplió con un retraso de quince años. The process of the conception, writing and revising of Modern Architecture Since 1900 would make an interesting study, according to William J.R. Curtis. After the first edition published in 1982, a second edition appeared in 1987 with a preface and an addendum on recent architecture. In the third edition (1996), the content was massively revised and expanded; an unusual integration of new findings into the overall synthesis. Although modern architecture in countries outside of central Europe and the United States already appeared in the first edition of the book, it is not until the third that Curtis fulfilled the objective to show what modern architecture may mean in remote parts of a rapidly changing world. This essay presents the story of the writing of the book and reflects on the changes introduced in the third edition understanding them as objectives that Curtis achieved with a delay of fifteen years. La arquitectura es el candidato interesante de los pioneros de la lingüística más allá de lo verbal. El cruce de la función, concepto central de la modernidad, y de la capacidad comunicativa del edificio, objetivo estigmatizado por esa misma modernidad, es el que hace interesante la apuesta. Sin embargo, donde el enfoque semiológico va a encontrar mayor desarrollo es en el ámbito urbano, no por razones de escala física, sino porque todo lenguaje, el del planeamiento urbano (de la modernidad) en primer lugar, es susceptible de ser entendido como instrumento de poder. De esta manera, el conflicto función/comunicación saltaría al plano de la sociología urbana y sus reivindicaciones. Justo al mismo tiempo en el que se despliega la ciudad tardocapitalista, con sus nuevos lenguajes casquivanos. Authors:Daniel Pinzón‑Ayala Pages: 136 - 147 Abstract: ResumenLas casas cuartel de la Guardia Civil conforman un heterogéneo conjunto de arquitecturas híbridas, en donde confluyen espacios laborales y residenciales. Su formalización tipológica por parte de la Institución no se efectuaría de manera decidida y continuada hasta la Segun-da República. En ese proceso, que continúa hasta la actualidad, ha participado un nutrido y, en gran medida desconocido, grupo de arquitectos, ingenieros militares y aparejadores, con una presencia reducida de arquitectas. A pesar de esa menor cuantía, su participación también es digna de ser reseñable, ya que en estos últimos cincuenta años también han con-tribuido a la evolución y modernización de las casas cuartel como tipología militar única en nuestro país. Por este motivo, en este artículo se pone el foco en una serie de arquitectas, en sus proyectos y en sus aportaciones, acorde con cada periodo histórico y con la propia infor-mación facilitada por ellas. The barracks of the Civil Guard are a heterogeneous group of hybrid architectures, where work and residential spaces converge. Their typological formalisation by the institution did not take place in a decisive and continuous manner until the Second Republic. In this process, which continues to the present day, a large and largely unknown group of architects, military engineers and quantity surveyors took part, with a reduced presence of women architects. Despite this smaller number, their participation is also worthy of note, as over the last fifty years they have also contributed to the evolution and modernisation of the barracks houses as a unique military typology in our country. For this reason, this article focuses on a series of women architects, their projects and their contributions, in accordance with each historical period and with the information provided by them. A General Study” in issue 5 of the journal Celtiberia. This was part of a university research that won first prize in a competition held in 1933 and was almost published in the journal Arquitectura in the summer of 1936. Thanks to extensive research on the career of Herrero Ayllón (ETSAM, class of 1935) it was possible to locate the full original proposal entitled “La casa popular en la Región de Pinares de Soria y Burgos”, submitted to the ‘Competition-Exhibition of Spanish Popular Architecture’, organised by the ‘Asociación Profesional de Alumnos de Arquitectura’ (APAA). This article examines this proposal, highlighting popular architecture as a rationalist point of reference present in the debates on tradition and modernity among students and teachers at the Madrid school in the pre-war period. Content present in the postwar period and in initial projects by Herrero Ayllón.ResumenEn 1953, Alejandro Herrero Ayllón y José Antón Pacheco publicaron “La Casa Pinariega. Un estudio general” en el número 5 de la revista Celtiberia. Se trata de una investigación universitaria que obtuvo el primer premio en un concurso convocado en 1933 y que estuvo a punto de ser publicado en la revista Arquitectura en el verano de 1936. Una amplia investigación sobre la trayectoria de Herrero Ayllón (ETSAM, promoción de 1935) ha permitido localizar la propuesta original titulada “La casa popular en la Región de Pinares de Soria y Burgos”, presentada al “Concurso-Exposición de Arquitectura Popular Española”, organizado por la “Asociación Profesional de Alumnos de Arquitectura” (APAA). Este artículo examina este trabajo que valora la arquitectura popular como un referente racionalista presente en los debates sobre tradición y modernidad entre los alumnos y profesores de la escuela madrileña en la preguerra.
