    •
  • Considerations About the Concept of Flexibility: The Home as an Emergent
           System

    • Abstract: Resumen: El cambio es impredecible. : Change is unpredictable. Yet, casting it as a question that can be addressed in terms of design -through form, structure, or program- has long captivated architects and designers. In his research on collective housing, Agatángelo Soler outlines the changing meanings of the concept of flexibility in architectural discourse and the design strategies formulated throughout the twentieth century to introduce (and debate) the possibility of change in the domestic interior.

  • Digitally Intelligent Architecture Has Little to Do With Computers (and
           Even Less with their Intelligence)

: Harking back to the age of early electronic computers, Mario Carpo recounts the history of cybernetics, and how enthusiasm for a new technology drove experiments in forms of responsive architecture, often overlooking the distance between imagination and actual computational capacities. The moral of this story is all the more poignant in the current frenzy over tools like AI or ChatGPT: change in architecture doesn’t always come in the form we expect or is underpinned by the technologies we expect it to be driven by.

  • Nature in Change: Exploring the Ecological Conditions of a Flooded Gravel
Pit in the Upper Rhine Plain

: The Anthropocene -a theory that places human activity as a source of geological change- may have helped raise awareness of our impact on the planet, but it has also reinforced human-centered narratives over nature. In this article on the ecological conditions of a flooded gravel pit in the Upper Rhin Plain, Johanna Just reflects on the site’s changing nature and proposes a narrative shift: plant and animal species, rather than passively adapting to anthropogenic environments, actively co-produce a new and unique ecology.

  • Two Transformation Projects in Paris, France. 2021, 2022

: Plan Común, in collaboration with 51N4E, reminds us that the radical opportunities of transformation lie in knowing both when and what to replace. In the two collective housing reformations that follow, this decision has a material underpinning -the need to improve circulation systems or replace decaying building components- but also expounds a political will: to work with the identity and social fabric of strategically-located historic buildings. By introducing new scales of collective space, both projects alter the social experience of inhabitation beyond the confines of the individual unit.

  • Ca.Sa Collection Archive. deploying the archive and the collection. Renca,
           Santiago, Chile

: As a manifesto against the particularly slow cogs of financing cultural buildings, Guillermo Hevia and Catalina Poblete propose an architecture of change driven by devices: minimal interventions that maximize the programmatic possibilities of a building. In this case, the building is a former warehouse in the popular neighborhood of Renca, and the program includes the storage and display of a private art collection, along with spaces for its socialization like a library and a bar.

  • Four Seasons House. Linares, Chile. 2022

: Every renovation project makes use of embodied energy, increasing the energy and material footprint of a building in the short term. But by reusing the longer-lasting layer of structure, renovations can lower the environmental cost of architecture in the long term: a building can be retrofitted with energy-efficient solutions and more socially effective spaces. Felipe Alarcón's renovation demonstrates this principle, improving the energy performance of the house while allowing the architect to rethink its forms of domesticity, relationship to the site and its neighborhood.

  • Panorama: art, science and the city. Santiago, Chile. 2018

: Intervening on heritage is never simple. Even if the desire for transformation exists -as this winning competition entry from 2018 will recall- it can be impaired by administrative problems or lack of investors willing to subsume the financial risk. In their project for Castillo Hidalgo -a historic monument located atop a historic hill in the center of Santiago- de la Cerda, Izquierdo and Núñez ration demolitions but intervene decidedly over the building and its site. Thus, reminding us that transformation is about re-making connections: between existing and proposed buildings, with the hill’s current system of walkways and lookouts, but also with its past programs, reimagined from the contemporary demands of its location.

  • Master Plan Batuco Marsh Nature Sanctuary. Batuco, Chile, 2022

: Sometimes the most ecological intervention is doing nothing at all, but at times doing nothing perpetuates a trajectory of abandonment that offers little benefit to the species involved. In their master plan for the Batuco marsh nature sanctuary, PAUR expands the meaning and timeframes for the concept of program. Working with infrastructure, activities, vegetation, and time, their proposal is a strategic framework for the recovery of a degraded landscape and the dissemination of education about the wetland ecosystem and its conservation.

  • Human Space Project: Museum and Garden

: For the authors of this winning competition entry to house sculptor Mario Irarrázabal’s work, a museum can be understood as a garden -defined by its limits but also open to change. For us at ARQ, this project also demonstrates how buildings can be tools for ecological recovery, wherein the logic of their positioning, circulation, and infrastructural networks are treated as opportunities to favor the more-than-human species that already inhabit the site.

  • Transforming the Territory by Water: an Irrigated Plan (1817-1827)

: Between 1817 and 1827, the expansion of water infrastructure in Santiago changed the way of understanding and managing the territory. Relying on cartographic reconstruction, Sandra Iturriaga takes us to the beginnings of the San Carlos canal -an artificial waterway that connected the Maipo and Mapocho rivers- to delve into the urban, political, and economic repercussions of a public scheme to irrigate south Santiago.

  • Everything, Everywhere, All at Once. Automation, Circularity, and
Reprogramming in Cedric Price’s Architectural Imagination

: Cedric Price was a fervent critic of a techno-optimism that relied blindly on technology as the answer to any problem. Luciano Brina delves deeper into the figure of Price and his provocative understanding of technology. Analyzing his visual production for the Potteries Thinkbelt (1966) and Fun Palace (1961) projects, Brina evinces a connection between Price's representational techniques, his social and political agendas, and how they anticipated contemporary calls for change: from remediation practices and environmental narratives to alternative urban processes.

  • Between the Street and the Main Hall. The Foyer of the Municipal Theater
           of Santiago, 1857-1952

: Many times, change in architecture is bolstered by circumstances beyond an individual’s control. Discussing the reforms to the Santiago Municipal Theater building, from its inauguration in 1857 until almost a century later, Germán Hidalgo recounts many forces that drive change: natural disasters, stylistic debates, urban modernization, among others. The foyer occupies a central role in this narrative, as a space for presentation and representation: where the technical demands of the theater meet the aspirations of an institution, a city, and the building’s successive architects.
