  • Mental health in times of pandemic: the parallel pandemic

    •
  • Influence of authentic leadership on the emotional state of deployed
military personnel: a study of morale as a mediator variable

The influence of military operations on the mental health and well-being of the personnel deployed, has always been a topic of interest, supported by considerable empirical evidence. Some of the variables related with such influence have been leadership and morale. Objectives: this study will have a triple objective. On the one hand, the effect of Authentic Leadership on the Emotional State of soldiers will be analyzed during a peacekeeping mission. On the other hand, any type of mediation from the Moral level in the relationship of leadership with the type of emotionality will be observed. In addition, this study will check the accumulation of stress during the development of the mission affects in any way the previous mentioned relationships. Method: data were collected from 150 military ones, in the first and fifth months of the mission, using the ALQ, MORAL and PANAS questionnaires; Regression, mediation and t-student analysis were used to test the hypotheses. Results: the relationship between Authentic Leadership and the Emotional State was confirmed, as well as the mediating effect of Moral on previous variables when emotions were positive. No significant differences between the data at the beginning and end of the mission were found. Conclusions: Authentic Leadership is consolidated as a model of great relevance in military environments, which goes hand in hand with Moral, in benefit of the emotional well-being of military deployed personnel.

  • Electroencephalographic activity during tasks of driving simulation with
           videogames

    • Abstract: RESUMEN Antecedentes y Objetivos. The study of the attentional function, a focus of interest in the neurosciences field, can be carried out through electroencephalographic quantification, a non-invasive technique that enables the evaluation of the brain activity. The objective of this work is to analyze the attention/concentration of staff of the Spanish Armed Forces in tactical simulations of handling military vehicles. For this purpose, variations in cortical bioelectric numerical complexity are analyzed when moving from resting states to simulation tasks, and with the difficulty of the task. Material and methods. Electroencephalographic signals were analyzed from a group of 36 volunteer subjects with the Mobility, an estimator of the average frequency of the signal that measures the standard deviation of the derivative of the signal in reference to the standard deviation of the amplitude. The data have been statistically studied by means of an exploratory survey, an analysis of variance of two factors and a hypothesis test. Results. An increase of the cortical average of Mobility is observed in each type of electroencephalogram as the task becomes more complex and requires more attention, and decreases as the activity ceases. Mobility shows a considerable increase in the occipital and part of the temporal areas during the simulations, which shows the activation of the signals corresponding to the primary visual area and the primary auditory cortex. Conclusions. Mobility detects changes in the activity of different cortical areas with the change in cognitive tasks. Thus, it can be considered a good indicator of brain activity.

  • Acute ischemia due to popliteal artery thrombosis after anterior knee
           dislocation

La demora en el tratamiento quirúrgico arterial aumenta gravemente el riesgo de amputación.SUMMARY Knee dislocations are rare but in a high percentage may cause severe and devastating neurovascular complications. Damage of the common peroneal nerve is the most frequent injury. The popliteal artery is more prone to be affected in posterior knee dislocation and whithin multiligament traumatic injury. We present a case of anterior tibio-femoral dislocation associated with acute ischemia due to popliteal artery occlusion that needed emergent surgical intervention for revascularisation of the left lower limb through bypass. Postoperative outcome was satisfactory with pedal and posterior tibial pulses recovery. A high grade of clinical suspicion is needed for early detection of vascular complications. Delay in vascular intervention increases dramatically the risk of irreversible injury and the need of amputation.

  • Iatrogenic massive gas embolism treated with hyperbaric oxygen therapy

It can be caused by diving and as a complication of different diagnostic and / or therapeutic procedures. In some cases it has serious medical complications, including death. The clinical impact depends on the volume of air within the cardiovascular system, the air intake velocity and its location. In the most serious cases, diagnosis and treatment must be immediate. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy allows immediate etiological treatment by rapidly reducing the size of air bubbles and dissolving them.

  • Intentional biological threats: implications for National Security

The use of biological material as a weapon of war is as old as the war conflicts themselves, but after the signing, in 1972, of the Convention on the Prohibition of the Development, Production and Stockpiling of Bacteriological (Biological) and Toxin Weapons and on their Destruction (CABT), its military use has practically disappeared. However, it has become part of the attacks of terrorist groups, which constitute a real threat to National Security. Biological weapons are included within the group of so-called “weapons of mass destruction” and include all types of agents, microbial or not, viral, natural or recombinant, and their derived toxins. Among the key factors in the development of this type of intentional biological threats, it is worth mentioning the increase in the appearance of emerging pathogens, the great development of genetic modification and editing technologies, such as CRISPR/Cas9, or the diversion and smuggling of sensitive precursors and materials. To this end, the following measures have been implemented: launch of the National Biosecurity Commission; control of dual-use material exports; strengthening of the Security and Protection Area of the Customs and Special Taxes Department of the Tax Agency; development of the Network of Biological Alert Laboratories (RE-LAB), coordinated by the Carlos III Health Institute; collaboration of the Spanish Technical Assistance and Emergency Response Teams (START).
