  • A review of anatomical terminology for the hip bone

      Abstract: Abstract Anatomists have been attempting to standardize anatomical terminology of the human body and in doing so created the Terminologia Anatomica as a standard language of anatomy. Despite developments such as the Terminologia Anatomica, a lack of consistency of anatomical terminology is still seen across and within disciplines. This study explores the variation in terminology for the hip bone through a literature review. In total, ten terms used to describe the hip bone were searched in PubMed, JSTOR, and EBSCO databases: “coxal bone,” “hip bone,” “innominate bone,” “os coxa,” “os coxae,” “ossa coxa,” “ossa coxae,” “os innominatum,” “os pelvicum,” and “pelvic bone.” Results found that the terms “hip bone” and “pelvic bone” were the most commonly used terms, with the most frequently used discipline being medicine. However, we argue against the use of these terms in favor of “coxal bone” or “innominate bone.” “Hip bone” should be avoided due to its colloquial nature, and “pelvic bone” is not specific enough to the structure of the hip. Latin terms are often incorrectly conjugated (e.g., “os coxae”); therefore, the English equivalent should be used when possible. Regardless, standardization of anatomical terminology should be adopted through consensus by practitioners, researchers, and stakeholders.

  • Atavistic and vestigial anatomical structures in the head, neck, and
           spine: an overview

      Abstract: Abstract Organisms may retain nonfunctional anatomical features as a consequence of evolutionary natural selection. Resultant atavistic and vestigial anatomical structures have long been a source of perplexity. Atavism is when an ancestral trait reappears after loss through an evolutionary change in previous generations, whereas vestigial structures are remnants that are largely or entirely functionless relative to their original roles. While physicians are cognizant of their existence, atavistic and vestigial structures are rarely emphasized in anatomical curricula and can, therefore, be puzzling when discovered incidentally. In addition, the literature is replete with examples of the terms atavistic and vestigial being used interchangeably without careful distinction between them. We provide an overview of important atavistic and vestigial structures in the head, neck, and spine that can serve as a reference for anatomists and clinical neuroscientists. We review the literature on atavistic and vestigial anatomical structures of the head, neck, and spine that may be encountered in clinical practice. We define atavistic and vestigial structures and employ these definitions consistently when classifying anatomical structures. Pertinent anatomical structures are numerous and include human tails, plica semilunaris, the vomeronasal organ, levator claviculae, and external ear muscles, to name a few. Atavistic and vestigial structures are found throughout the head, neck, and spine. Some, such as human tails and branchial cysts may be clinically symptomatic. Literature reports indicate that their prevalence varies across populations. Knowledge of atavistic and vestigial anatomical structures can inform diagnoses, prevent misrecognition of variation for pathology, and guide clinical interventions.

  • Effect of interprofessional education on cadaver dissection seminar

      Abstract: Abstract In 2010, WHO published a “Framework for action on interprofessional education and collaborative practice.” Interprofessional education (IPE) is now being conducted in various ways. We have been holding cadaver dissection seminars to provide opportunities for medical students, nursing students, and nurse practitioner (NP) students to learn together. In this study, we investigated the effect of learning about IPE in cadaver dissection seminars. The seminars were held for 5 days each in 2021 and 2022 (the number of days of participation was arbitrary). In the seminars, teams of 3–5 participants with the same theme collaborated to dissect a single donated cadaver. Teams were made up of participants with different departments: 29 medical students, 12 NP students, and 20 nursing students participated in the seminar, and participants were surveyed before and after the seminars. The Readiness for Interprofessional Learning Scale (RIPLS) scores before and after the dissection seminar increased significantly overall. The scores of medical and nursing students increased significantly, but those of NP students did not significantly change. In terms of the number of days of participation, a significant increase in scores was found for participants who participated for ≥ 2 days. Overall, a significant positive correlation was found between intrinsic motivation to learn and RIPLS scores. For medical students, a significant negative correlation was noted between extrinsic motivation and RIPLS scores. Cadaver dissection seminars conducted by medical, nursing, and NP students demonstrated IPE learning effect on medical students and undergraduate nursing students.

  • Anatomical study of a human skull with multiple osteomas in a
           seventeenth-century Dutch still-life painting: bone morphology and
           artistic intention

      Abstract: Abstract Skulls were frequently depicted in seventeenth-century Dutch still-life paintings. Skulls were interpreted as symbols of vanitas—meaning the evanescence of life—but their morphological features have received little attention. This study analyzed a skull with abnormal tumors in a seventeenth-century Dutch still-life painting by a renowned artist, Edwaert Collier (ca. 1642–1708), from anatomical, forensic, and pathological perspectives. The morphology of the cranium and teeth indicated that the skull likely belonged to a middle-aged female. We carefully diagnosed the abnormal masses as multiple osteomas on the skull and left femur, based on clinical studies and paleopathological literature, which reported lesions with a similar appearance to those observed in Collier’s work. Furthermore, detailed observations of the cranial sutures and epiphyses of the long bones in his paintings revealed that the artist may have selected bones with a morphology that was suitable for the subject of vanitas. Collier repeatedly depicted the skull with metopism, the rare condition of having a persistent metopic suture in adulthood. A skull with a metopic suture is called Kreuzschädel, meaning the cross skull, because it forms a cruciform by connecting with the sagittal and coronal sutures. The artist might have chosen skulls with metopic sutures, which is reminiscent of the crucifixion of Christ, as an appropriate motif for the vanitas painting. This paper argues that anatomical analysis could explain the hidden meaning of the painting and disclose the fascinating collaborations between anatomy and art in the seventeenth-century Dutch Republic.

  • Morphologic observation for anomalous patterns of the flexor carpi
           radialis muscle and atypical insertions: a proposal for a new
           classification

      Abstract: Abstract In the present study, four types of variations of the flexor carpi radialis with accessory muscular bundles were classified depending on the origin of the accessory muscular bundle and relationships with the bicipital aponeurosis, biceps brachii, pronator teres, and coracobrachialis. Six types of insertions of the tendon of the flexor carpi radialis were also divided according to their inserted positions on the carpal and metacarpal bones. An accessory muscular bundle of the flexor carpi radialis was found in 4 (1 female and 3 males) of 68 cadavers (5.88%), with five examples in 136 arms (3.68%). It was bilateral in one cadaver and unilateral (two on the right and one on the left) in three. The insertion of the flexor carpi radialis tendon was not only on the proximal surface of the base of the second metacarpal bone but also on the third metacarpal bone, the tubercle of the trapezium, and the scaphoid. These findings and classifications are important in anatomical education, and have important significances in clinical diagnosis and therapies.

  • Anatomical study of arterial arrangement of the spinal cord in Syrian
           hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus)

      Abstract: Abstract This study aimed to investigate the arterial arrangement of the spinal cord in Syrian hamsters, and to identify differences and similarities to humans and experimental animals that are mostly used as models in studies into ischemic spinal cord injuries. This observational anatomical study was conducted on 20 adult Syrian hamsters using dissection and corrosion casting technique. The general anatomy of the arterial blood supply of spinal cord was obtained and noted as follows: (1) high variability in the level of the origin of right and left vertebral arteries, (2) the independent origin of dorsal intercostal arteries, (3) origin of lumbar arteries as a common trunk with right and left divisions, (4) presence of dorsal and ventral radicular branches in both sides of the cervical spinal cord with almost the same frequency, (5) greater presence of ventral and dorsal radicular branches in the left side of the thoracolumbar spinal cord, (6) two dorsal spinal arteries originating from the posterior inferior cerebellar arteries and extending to the caudal end of the thoracic spinal cord, (7) continuous ventral spinal artery originating from both vertebral arteries and extending to the conus medularis, and (8) presence of the artery of Adamkiewicz in the thoracic region of the spinal cord. From comparative anatomy viewpoints, the arteries supplying the spinal cord of Syrian hamsters exhibit many similarities with humans, laboratory rodents, and rabbits in many aspects compared to dogs, cats, and pigs. Overall, Syrian hamsters can be used as a proposed model in experimental studies of the spinal cord ischemia.

  • The potential anti-osteoporotic effect of exercise—induced increased
           preptin level in ovariectomized rats

      Abstract: Abstract Osteoporosis increases bone fragility and fractures. Preptin hormone is regulated by moderate exercise training and increases bone formation. Therefore, this study was conducted to see how estradiol administration and moderate exercise training affected osteoporotic changes in ovariectomized (OVX) rats. To achieve this aim, 36 healthy adult female Wistar albino rats were randomized into Sham, OVX, ovariectomized estradiol-treated (OVX + E) (OVX + E rats were treated using subcutaneous estradiol benzoate 2.5 μg/kg body weight/day), ovariectomized practicing moderate exercise training, ovariectomized estradiol-treated and practiced a moderate exercise training, and ovariectomized alendronate-treated (OVX + Alen) (OVX + Alen rats were treated orally with alendronate 3 mg/kg body weight/week) groups. Alendronate was used as a standard anti-osteoporotic drug. Moderate exercise training, including therapy with estradiol and alendronate for OVX rats began on the fourth week and lasted for six weeks. Results showed that OVX rats had estrogen and preptin deficiency in serum. These deficiencies were associated with a significant increase in bone resorption biomarkers (urinary deoxypyridinoline and hydroxyproline), and bone formation biomarkers (serum osteocalcin and bone-specific alkaline phosphatase). Also, serum pro-inflammatory cytokines (tumor necrosis factor alpha and interleukin-6) were increased, while bone osteopontin (OPN) expression was decreased. Subsequently, the osteoporotic alterations were verified based on histopathological changes. From the results, estradiol therapy and moderate exercise training significantly improved these findings to the same extent as that of the standard alendronate treatment. Therefore, through their anti-inflammatory properties, increasing bone OPN expression, and regulating serum preptin; estradiol therapy and moderate exercise training can reduce osteoporotic alterations in OVX rats. Thus, combined estradiol therapy and moderate exercise training could be a promising potential therapeutic protocol to reduce postmenopausal osteoporosis. Also, targeting serum preptin and bone osteopontin regulation could have a critical role in the treatment of postmenopausal osteoporosis.

  • Three-dimensional anatomical structure formed by granule cell layer and
           pyramidal cell layer in human hippocampus

      Abstract: Abstract In the human hippocampus, the pyramidal layer consists of the inferior aspect of the hippocampus which is organized segmentally. Each segment, together with granule layer of the dentate gyrus, exhibits structural unity. In humans, ellipsoidal protrusions called pyramidal hillocks (PHs), which consist of a thick pyramidal cell layer (PL), are present in the inferior aspect of the hippocampus, and are segmentally organized along a longitudinal axis. It is also known that the granule cell layer (GL) of the dentate gyrus (DG) is not a smooth but undulated structure. However, the cytoarchitectural relationships between the protrusions and undulation have yet to be studied well. Here, we aimed to clarify the three-dimensional cytoarchitecture of the PL and GL of human hippocampus. For that purpose, the GL and PL were three-dimensionally reconstructed from serial sections of human hippocampus stained with hematoxylin and eosin. The GL was shaped as tubing with an opening in the dorsal part, and undulated especially in the medial part, forming digit-like processes. In the base of a digit-like process, protrusions of the GL extended laterally, with longer ones reaching the lateral edge, whereas shorter ones disappeared around the medial 1/3 of the GL. Consequently, the lateral part of the GL was undulated loosely. In the ventral view of the PL, the ellipsoidal PHs were sagittally aligned, whereas in the top view, each PH formed an ellipsoidal trough. Each structural unit was formed by a trough of the PH along the bottom, and had a longer GL protrusion in the upper-center, and shorter GL protrusions located between the longer protrusions and the lateral edge of the GL. A digit-like process extended into a dens. It is concluded that a unit of the PH and the GL comprises the longitudinal segmental formation of the hippocampus.

  • Comparison of the retrosplenial cortex size between the degu (Octodon
           degus) and the Wistar rat (Rattus norvegicus)

      Abstract: Abstract The degu (Octodon degus) is a rodent that normally constructs burrows for nesting and rearing. To navigate inside these burrows, degus may use idiothetic and/or sensory cues more than visual information, which is less effective in burrows. Spatial information for navigation is processed in several key brain regions including the retrosplenial cortex (RS). However, the structural characteristics of the degu RS have not been previously reported. The present study measured the sizes of the RS and constituent areas 29 and 30 in the degu, and compared these to those found in the rat, which is a terrestrial rodent. The proportion of the rostrocaudal length of the entire RS relative to that of the entire cortex was significantly larger in degus versus rats. The proportion of the rostrocaudal length of the RS at levels rostral to the splenium of the corpus callosum relative to that of the entire cortex was also significantly larger in degus versus rats. Furthermore, the ratio of the estimated volume of area 29 relative to that of area 30 was significantly larger in degus versus rats. These results show that the degu has a rostrocaudally longer rostral RS with a larger area 29 compared to the rat, which suggests that these structural features may be relevant to differences in spatial information processing between the fossorial degu and terrestrial rat.

  • The Corona mortis is similar in size to the regular obturator artery, but
           is highly variable at the level of origin: an anatomical study

      Abstract: Abstract An enlarged anastomosis connecting the vascular territory of the external iliac and the obturator artery may replace most or all of the latter. This relatively common vascular variation, known as Corona mortis, can lead to death in the worst-case scenario if injured. Despite being well-known, exact anthropometric data are lacking. The purpose of this study was to determine diameters of the regular obturator artery, the Corona mortis and the inferior epigastric artery. In addition, the level of origin of the Corona mortis was quantified. The obturator artery and its norm variants were dissected bilaterally in 75 specimens (37 females, 38 males) and measured using two different methods. The Corona mortis was present in 36 of the 150 hemipelves (24%), presenting in one third of all cases bilaterally. Its level of origin measured from the commencement of the inferior epigastric artery was subject to high variability (4.4–28.3 mm). The mean diameters of the Corona mortis (mean 2.5 and 2.1 mm, respectively) and the regular obturator artery (mean 2.4 and 2.0 mm, respectively) were similar for both methods. There were no significant sex nor side differences. The diameter of the inferior epigastric artery was significantly smaller distal to the origin of the Corona mortis. The high incidence, non-predictable level of origin of the Corona mortis and its size similar to the regular obturator artery support its clinical relevance even to date. Clinicians should always be aware of an additional arterial vessel close to the pelvic brim.

  • Cross-sectional geometry of the femoral diaphyseal cortical bones:
           analysis of central mass distribution

      Abstract: Abstract A detailed analysis of differences in skeletal shape among many individuals is expected to reveal the mechanical significance behind various morphological features. To confirm the distribution of the cortical bone region in cross sections, the relative position of the central mass distribution (CMD) of the cortical bone region to the CMD of the entire cross section was examined. A total of 90 right human femoral skeletons were examined using clinical multi-slice computed tomography. For nine cross sections of each femur, we determined the CMD of the whole area, including both cortical bone and medullary areas, as CMD-W, and that of the cortical bone region in the same cross section as CMD-C, and they were compared. The medial and anterior portion of the cortex was relatively thick just below the lesser trochanter. The posterior cortical bone tended to be relatively thick in the region from the center to the distal part of the diaphysis. Females had a significantly more medially deviated CMD than males throughout the entire diaphysis. These results suggest that femurs with advanced cortical bone thinning tend to have a concentration of cortical bone in their medial portion. CMD-C was located farther from the diaphysis axis as the degree of medial bending increased. Conversely, the greater the lateral bending of the diaphysis, the closer CMD-C was to the diaphysis axis. As the amount of bone decreases with age, self-adjustment could occur so that the cortical bone's critical area remains to prevent a decrease in mechanical strength.

  • Anatomical variations of the superficial palmar arch in human fetuses

      Abstract: Abstract The superficial palmar arch is an important anatomical structure that contributes to the arterial supply of the palmar side of the hand in the upper extremity. However, there is limited information on the embryological morphological structure of the superficial palmar arch in the literature. We studied the types of the superficial palmar arch and determined their variations by dissecting 80 upper extremities of 40 formalin-fixed human fetuses (19 males, 21 females) 18–37 weeks of age. The types and variations of the superficial palmar arch were examined, and the median artery was imaged. The superficial palmar arch type was complete in 58 hands (72.5%) and incomplete in 22 hands (27.5%). The complete group consisted of type A (47.5%), type B (16.25%), type C (3.75%), type D (1.25%), and type E (3.75%). On the other hand, the incomplete group consisted of type F (15%), type G (8.75%), type H (2.5%), and type I (1.25%). A median artery that originated from the ulnar artery and passed through the carpal tunnel during its course was detected in two hands (2.5%). Knowledge of the superficial palmar arch variations will contribute to hand microsurgery particularly in vascular graft and free flap application interventions for arterial bleeding in the palmar region.

  • A novel model for hands-on laparoscopic pelvic surgery training on
           Genelyn-embalmed body: an initial feasibility study

      Abstract: Abstract The human donor body provides a well-accepted ex vivo model for laparoscopic surgical training. Unembalmed, or fresh-frozen, bodies comprise high-fidelity models. However, their short life span and high cost relatively limit the hands-on training benefits. In contrast, soft embalmed body of donors has a relatively longer usability without compromising tissue flexibility. This study reports the initial experience of the utility and feasibility of human donor Genelyn-embalmed body as a novel soft-embalmed cadaveric model for laparoscopic surgical training. An expert laparoscopic surgeon, who organised many fresh-frozen body donor courses, performed deep laparoscopic pelvic dissection and laparoscopic surgical tasks including suturing and electrosurgery on a single Genelyn-embalmed body. The three sessions were performed over a course of 3 weeks. The body was fully embalmed using the Genelyn technique. The technique consisted of a single-point closed arterial perfusion of embalming solution via the carotid artery with no further exposure to or immersion in embalming fluids thereafter. The donor’s Genelyn-embalmed body provided a feasible model for laparoscopic surgical training. Initial experience shows evidence of this model being feasible and realistic. There was reproducibility of these qualities across a minimum of 3 weeks in this single-donor study. Initial experience shows that donor’s Genelyn-embalmed body provides a novel model for laparoscopic surgical training, which possesses fidelity and is feasible for laparoscopic training. While further studies are needed to validate these findings, this technical note provides perspectives from an expert trainer regarding this model and provides a photographic and videographic atlas of this model’s use in laparoscopy.

  • Incidental finding of Clostridium perfringens on human corpses used for
           the anatomy course

      Abstract: Abstract Post-mortem specimens used for anatomy teaching are commonly embalmed using compositions of chemicals, with the objective to maintain tissue quality and to avoid putrefaction. Monitoring for bacterial or fungal contamination is becoming increasingly important especially when measures are taken to minimize exposure by chemicals such as formaldehyde. In this case, random swabs were taken from six corpses embalmed with ethanol-glycerin and Thiel embalming. Cultures and MALDI-TOF analyses yielded four cases of Clostridium perfringens contamination. C. perfringens is of special interest as a human pathogen. A potential source was identified in the containers filled with the moistening solution. Cross contamination with Clostridium species has likely occurred between corpses sharing the moistening solution and soaking the cover linen directly within the containers. To minimize any risk for those exposed, the moistening solutions were discarded and all equipment thoroughly disinfected. The specimens had to be cremated as they formed a potential source of Clostridium spores. Deviating from previous routines it was formalized that the cover linen must not be submerged in the moistening contains rather than moistening the specimens directly with dedicated vessels. Follow-up analyses yielded no further contamination with C. perfringens.

  • The occipital artery: a meta-analysis of its anatomy with clinical
           correlations

      Abstract: Abstract The occipital artery arises as one of the main branches of the external carotid artery. The goal of the present meta-analysis was to provide a detailed analysis of the complete anatomy of the occipital artery using the available data in the literature. The main online medical databases such as PubMed, Embase, Scopus, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, and Google Scholar were used to gather all studies on anatomical variations, course, branches, and the close anatomical area of the occipital artery. A total of 65 studies were indicated, evaluated, and included in this meta-analysis. The occipital artery was found to run in the groove with a prevalence of 83.93% (95% confidence intervals: 50.53–100.00%). The occipital artery forming a common trunk with another artery had a prevalence of 13.91% (95% confidence intervals: 9.15–19.47%). The mean maximal diameter of the occipital artery was set to 2.26 mm (standard error = 0.15). The mean maximal diameter of the occipital segment of the occipital artery was found to be 1.24 mm (standard error = 0.15). The mean occipital artery length was set to 131.93 mm (standard error = 3.02). In conclusion, the authors of the present study believe that this is the most accurate and up-to-date meta-analysis regarding the anatomy of the occipital artery. Knowledge about this structure can be of great use when performing revascularization procedures, such as the occipital artery-posterior inferior cerebellar artery bypass, or reconstructive procedures, such as the occipital artery fascial flap.

  • Human body donation and surgical training: a narrative review with global
           perspectives

      Abstract: Abstract Utilization of human material in surgical simulation training has been well-established as an effective teaching method. Despite the value of donor-based surgical simulation training, its application may be hampered by difficulties regarding access to donated bodies. Therefore, the aim of this review is to assess body donation and body acquisition practices with regard to surgical simulation training programs around the world. The results of this review highlight discrepancies regarding body donation practices and surgical simulation programs among continents and countries. The utilization of donor bodies in surgical simulation appears to mirror body donation practices. In countries that rely mostly or exclusively upon unclaimed bodies or executed criminals, there are scant reports of donor-based surgical simulation programs. In countries where willed-body donation is the principal source of human material, there tend to be many surgical simulation programs that incorporate human material as part of surgical training. This review suggests that, in anatomical and surgical education, the utilization of active willed-body donation programs, as opposed to the utilization of unclaimed human bodies, positively corresponds with the development of beneficial donor-based surgical simulation programs. Likewise, donor-based surgical simulation training programs may have an influence on the perpetualization of willed-body donations.

  • Variant formation and branching pattern of superficial palmar arch in a
           human cadaver: a case report

      Abstract: Abstract Superficial palmar arch (SPA) is a dominant vascular structure in the palmar region that provides a major blood supply to fingers. Present case describes a rare formation and branching pattern of SPA in a formalin fixed cadaveric left hand. In this case, SPA was formed by the anastomoses between radial artery (RA) and the superficial brachioulnar artery (SBUA), which is defined as an ulnar artery with a high origin in the arm. More interestingly, unlike classic literature, SPA sends out six branches instead of four, and the principle artery of thumb arises directly from SPA instead of RA. The aforementioned variations have rarely been reported in previous literature and demonstrate important clinical significance for accidental intra-arterial injections, errors in blood pressure readings, as well as orthopedic, plastic and vascular surgeries of the upper limbs.

  • Anomalous drainage of the right gonadal vein

      Abstract: Abstract The present research aims to present and describe an unusual and rare anatomical variation in relation to the drainage of the right gonadal vein. This anatomical knowledge is crucial as it assists in the work of surgeons and health professionals in general. The dissection occurred in the anterior wall of the abdomen and, through observational analysis, an anatomical variation was found in the drainage of the right gonadal vein in a human cadaver, obtained by anonymous donation, male gender and without predetermined clinical characteristics, ethnicity, and age, belonging to the Padre Albino University Center collection. This research was approved by the Research Ethics Committee under protocol 12923919.8.0000.5430. The drainage of right gonadal vein is this variant occurs anastomosed with an innominate venous trunk that empties into the inferior vena cava. Furthermore, the presence of an accessory right renal vein is also noticed, which anastomoses with the innominate venous trunk and with the right renal vein, through a vein suggestively called interrenal, differing from the anatomical normality described in the literature. This variation is supposed to occur due to flaws in the development of the embryo, which generate venous changes in the origins of the right gonadal vein. Acknowledging the existence of it is relevant when performing surgical procedures in the region, as it differs from the most frequent anatomy found in the human population. The rare drainage of the right gonadal vein through an innominate trunk to the inferior vena cava and its importance is highlighted in this article.

  • Acute colonic flexures: the basis for developing an artificial
           intelligence-based tool for predicting the course of colonoscopy

      Abstract: Abstract Tortuosity of the colon is an important parameter for predicting the course of colonoscopy. Computed tomography scans of the abdominal cavity were performed in 224 (94 female, 130 male) adult subjects. The number of acute (angle not exceeding 90°) bends between adjacent colonic segments was noted and analyzed. Data were analyzed for correlation with gender, age, height and weight. An artificial intelligence algorithm was proposed to predict the course of colonoscopy. We determined the number of acute flexions in females to be 9.74 ± 2.5 (min–max: 4–15) and in males to be 8.7 ± 2.75 (min–max: 4–20). In addition, more acute flexions were found in women than in men and in older women (after 60 years) and men (after 80 years) than in younger ones. We found the greatest variability in the number of acute flexures in the sigmoid colon (0–9), but no correlation was found between the number of acute flexures and age, gender, height or BMI. In the transverse colon, older and female subjects had more flexures than younger and male subjects, respectively. Older subjects had more acute flexures in the descending colon than younger subjects. There are opportunities to use the number of acute flexures (4–7, 8–12, more than 12 flexures) to classify patients into appropriate risk categories for future incomplete colonoscopy. On this basis, we predicted troublesome colonoscopies in 14.9% female and in 6.1% male subjects.
