  • Native ethnonyms in Uruguayan historiography: disassembling pieces from
           different puzzles

Nuestro propósito no es el de aportar una nueva cartografía étnica pero sí una herramienta para el sentido crítico a la hora de utilizar términos imprecisos y relativosThe wide variety of ethnonyms used to name the pre-Solis peoples (those living there previous to J. Diaz de Solis landing, 1516) at the present Uruguayan territory has being and still is, subject to different ethno-historical controversies. The ethnonym inventory arises from different contexts driving to a polysemic confusion that generates chronologies subject to ideological (de-)formations, both at the original sources and on the studies based on them. Based on an analysis of Jakobson’s communication theory, we’ll demonstrate the subject’s complexity and we propose, according to the production context, a diachronic categorization of the corpus of ethnonyms in three different stages. The savage native, the frontier native and the national native, being this last one mainly extemporaneous to the sources. Our aim is not to provide a new ethnic cartography but a tool using critical sense when it comes to use imprecise and relative terms

  • Contributions for a discussion on the ayahuasca regulation in
           Uruguay

In this article we will analyze the process of legal and political regulation of the psychoactive substance “ayahuasca”. We will focus on the relationship between the new therapeutic, spiritual and religious practices related to the use of ayahuasca, and its legal regulation in the international and local context. Firstly, we will briefly consider some cultural and anthropological definition of the general problem of “drugs”, and the influence of Western Culture and the prohibitionist movements in these topics. Secondly, we will analize the specific case of ayahuasca in the international context, stressing in some important events on the legal ground of U.S., Brazil and other countries. Finally we will focus on the case of Uruguay

  • Underlying phenomena of the Afro-Uruguayan candombe

Contemporary candombe lives popularization and nationalization processes. In this context, and cultural processes to be read in different keys, we stop to analyze the experiences according to ethno-racial ancestry of the performers. We have identified mechanisms of racial discrimination present in this manifestation of African matrices; analyze the impacts of secularizing process and religious racism on the performance of candombe, and finally, from a gender-decolonial perspective, we approach the positions that men and women occupy in such representation

  • A certain approach on suffering bodies: re-location of riverside
           slums in Buenos Aires

I examine the case of villas (slums) that are being evicted for the construction of a riverfront path, within the cleaning-up of the Matanza-Riachuelo basin issued by the Argentine Supreme Court of Justice. My goal is to analyze the moral prescription underlying this environmental and land-use planning, the slum relocation process involved in the cleaning-up of the basin and the impact of displacements on the lives of the afflicted population. What are the unexpected or contradictory consequences of a large-scale project, with a ‘good environmental cause’' What meanings do the different social actors involved attribute to the right to a healthy environment or the alleged improvement in quality of life implicit in the relocation' As we shall see, this innovative judicial sentence does not operate in a vacuum: certain procedimentalizations -and not others- define the rights of the afflicted people according to the appreciation of their capitals and their negotiation possibilities

  • The cultural spread within the regional integration between Concordia
           (Argentina) and Salto (Uruguay)

Currently, the city of Concordia has an active presence of Uruguayans (residents or tourist) and as well as “renewed” political cultural speeches about integration. These facts reveal the need of re-thinking and re-integrating the symbolic boundaries and the identity reconfigurations that interpellate social and cultural ways of -politically- living in the city. In this context, the spreading, promotion and participation of certain “binational” cultural practices are significant to be studied. From a socio-anthropological perspective, the dialectic between theory and fieldwork would allow us to dialectically rebuild the boundaries, from the complexity that the cultural space has in daily life. We would refer to three study-cases (The Revista Boca a Boca, the Feria de las Golondrinas and the Primer Encuentro Internacional de Candombe de las dos orillas) to identify and understand the different social actors that impulse the development of the cultural area. In this way, we will analyze how different and unequal identities configuration and ways of using the city are generated, which reflect existing gaps of the local current cultural policy.

  • Dynamic bio-politics at the urban mesh of Medellin and nearby
           neighborhoods between 1945 and 1951

Approaching concepts such as city, territory and population is putting to work urban imaginary and dwelling aesthetics that make an unclear bio-political framework out of the concept of “space”. This is what happened at Medellin, capital city of the Antioquia department in Colombia, between 1945 and 1951. Around 1946, Spaniard Jose Luis Sert and Austrian Paul L. Wiener were hired by the Medellin City Council to work out a planning project for the future city, based on the models created by the well known French architect Le Corbusier. They planned a city realignment to be known as the City Urban Development Plan in 1951. Starting on 1946, the plan looked for a fluid city linked to the bio-political circulation of the social body, the population. However this bio-political web linked to an imaginary of the city, conceived along a population control, can not completely discipline the symbolic interaction provided by the games of aesthetic and prosaic appropriation by the living city. It’s perceived by the social body playing different tactics that make urbanism a bunch of bettings on human re-signification of the built space.

  • The joy of life.: Testimony as an opening towards the articulation between
           trauma, Government and memory

This article stands for the articulation of four key concepts to think about the construction of memory and justice of the last Argentinian military dictatorship: testimony, trauma, State and memory. Starting from the definition of these concepts, the analysis focuses on the testimony of Mario Villani, a survivor of the last military dictatorship in Argentina, from both the syntagmatic axis, as a narration, and its paradigmatic aspect, articulating the context of production of the testimony with policies that the different Governments have maintained around memory and justice. The aim of the article is to analyze the contributions and limitations that theories of trauma establish in order to examine the constructs of collective and historical memories.

  • Ethnography heuristics in the Social Sciences research process

It gives us more information on the way social phenomena’s meanings are born, both relating to the researcher and to what’s being investigated. At the same time, it shows us the importance of the epistemologic and theoretical dimensions of research above methods and information data-collection techniques. It underlines cosmovision’s importance from which the selected researches are born, be it from the very selection of the research object as well as the data-collection techniques applied, including theoretical and metodologic influences. It thus shows us that the most important thing in scientific research is the researcher’s point of view and influence on the research subject, because it clearly informs us more about the context from which the object is analyzed than about the subject itself. Through some examples such as the notion of “natives” we will show the heuristics on the “hermeneutical ubiquity” concerning the current social sciences’ “objectivity”, heir of the “colonialist” ethnography and the neo-colonialism of the ethnography that make sacred the ultimate detailed data, observation and visibility of the described facts
