  • MARK TWAIN AND THE UNITED KINGDOM: A PECULIAR RELATIONSHIP'

    • Authors: Frédéric Dumas
      Pages: 1 - 17
Abstract: Only scattered pieces remain of the project of a travelogue on England that Mark Twain planned in the wake of The Innocents Abroad (1869), the bestseller that had established him as a renowned traveler-writer. The baffling renouncement may be found in the author’s self-confessed unwillingness to water down his usual caustic humor in the context of the hearty welcome he received as soon as his first trip to the United Kingdom. Attentive readers, though, may find such explanation frustrating, given Twain’s sometimes ruthless treatment of other countries he also held in great esteem, as was the case with India in Following the Equator (1897). In order to analyze the question of Twain’s puzzling treatment of the United Kingdom in the context of his travel writing, this paper starts by providing a mostly factual presentation of his stays in the United Kingdom before concentrating on the textual aspect, highlighting the particular importance of London in the author’s assertion of himself among the greatest literary masters.

  • LANGUAGE ACQUISITION IN THE CONTEXT OF TRANSIT MIGRATION

    • Authors: Ahmed Ech-Charfi, Anouar Duieb
      Pages: 18 - 43
Abstract: This paper is an exploratory qualitative study of the acquisition of Moroccan Arabic by four illegal transit migrants in Rabat. These migrants come from Senegal, Congo, Cameroon and Ghana. They speak different mother tongues but three of them speak French as a second language while the Ghanaian speaks English. The paper tries to focus on the micro level of individual experiences as well as on the meso level of migrant organizations and the macro level of language ideologies. The informants have been found to draw on various linguistic and non-linguistic resources to achieve understanding of the multilingual sociolinguistic situation of the host society and to try to establish communication with its members.

  • THE CHALLENGES OF THE MOROCCAN SOCIETY – MUHAMMED ZEFZAF’S
           “DROUGHT” AND MOROCCO TODAY

    • Authors: Marko Gagić
      Pages: 44 - 62
Abstract: This paper deals with some of the most acute challenges for the Moroccan society. It is based on a short story titled Drought, by the Moroccan author Muhammed Zefzaf (d. 2001), analyzed from today’s perspective. Zefzaf often wrote about social issues and the life in poor and marginalized strata of society, and this paper is the first result of a broader research in which his works are analyzed and put into today’s context. The author of this paper has performed five field trips to Morocco since 2015, interviewed numerous residents of this country, and the results of this research are combined with the analysis of Zefzaf’s work in order to present a picture of the development of certain segments of Moroccan society.

  • OBELEŽJA MORFOLOŠKE VEZANOSTI FRAZEOLOŠKIH KOMPONENATA U
           NEMAČKOM JEZIKU

    • Authors: Branislav Ivanović
      Pages: 63 - 76

  • DIE VERWENDUNG DER WERTENDEN ADJEKTIVE IN DEN PLENARSITZUNGEN DES
           BUNDESTAGES

    • Authors: Ljubomir Ivanović
      Pages: 77 - 92

  • STRUKTURNA I SEMANTIČKA ANALIZA LEKSIČKIH JEDINICA IZGRAĐENIH OD
           LEKSEMA 天 /tiān/ (nebo) I 地 /dì/ (zemlja) U SAVREMENOM KINESKOM
           JEZIKU

    • Authors: Ana Jovanović
      Pages: 93 - 118
Abstract: Ovaj rad daje detaljnu strukturnu i semantičku analizu leksičkih jedinica izgrađenih od leksema 天 /tiān/ (nebo) i 地 /dì/ (zemlja) koje se mogu naći u sedmom izdanju Rečnika savremenog kineskog jezika.

  • INTERTEKSTUALNOST U DISKURSU REKLAMNIH PORUKA

    • Authors: Silva Kostić, Natalija Panić Cerovski
      Pages: 119 - 138

  • LITERATUR ALS HYPERTEXT IM WEB ODER HAT DIE LITERATUR EINE DIGITALE
           ZUKUNFT'

    • Authors: Anđelka Krstanović
      Pages: 139 - 153

  • It’s like being hit by a tsunami: The use of the NATURAL FORCE metaphor
for conceptualising the COVID-19 pandemic in English and Serbian

    • Authors: Nadežda Silaški, Tatjana Đurović
      Pages: 161 - 179
Abstract: Many different metaphors have been used so far in public health communication to capture different aspects of the COVID-19 pandemic since they serve as an apt instrument in crisis discourse of conveying important messages to various audiences in a simple and easily understandable manner. Within the theoretical framework of Critical Metaphor Analysis (Charteris-Black, 2004, 2005, 2019; Musolff, 2004, 2006, 2016) and drawing on the data gathered during the period 2020-2021 from various British/American and Serbian online news media (The Financial Times, The Guardian, CNN, The Economist, Blic, NovaS, Novosti), we explore the strategic and arguably deliberate use of the natural force metaphor as an effective instrument in public health communication discourse concerning the COVID-19 pandemic. Our main aim is to demonstrate the universal power of this metaphor in channeling the general public’s perceptions and behaviour into a desired direction in crisis communication, independent of the language or culture in which the crisis discourse is produced. This power is attested in this metaphor’s strong emotional and evaluative contents – it serves both to communicate a sense of danger, uncertainty and threat coming from the virus, as well as to legitimise the wanted course of action and conceal the responsibility of government officials and health experts by shifting all the blame for possible inefficiencies of anti-epidemic measures solely on the allegedly uncontrollable nature of the COVID-19 pandemic.

  • ONLINE MODE OF AUTOBIOGRAPHICAL REMINISCING: DISCOURSE PRACTICES IN
           DIGITAL SOCIETY

    • Authors: Irina Tivyaeva
      Pages: 180 - 194
Abstract: Autobiographical memory is known to be unique to humans and play a key role in an individual’s identity and self-development. Its unparalleled self-assessing nature and self-identification function make it an unmatched source of information about values and life dominants of both individuals and generations. In this paper, autobiographical reminiscing is studied in the digital discourse perspective. Digital communication is known to be affecting self-expression styles, causing transformations in regular formats, systems of genres, and discourse practices. The objective of the research is to examine general language-related trends in online sharing of autobiographical memories with a particular emphasis on discourse structure and varieties. To conduct the research, an appropriate corpus of English autobiographical reports was collected from Internet sources, including online diaries, blogs, newspaper articles, discussions, etc. The extracted memory accounts were analyzed on the discursive, structural, content, and axiological levels while the obtained results were compared with previous data on non-digital autobiographical memories and interpreted mostly in the discourse perspective.

  • THE PLACE OF AMERICAN ENGLISH IN EUROPEAN EDUCATION

    • Authors: Nenad Tomović
      Pages: 195 - 205
Abstract: The aim of this paper is to provide arguments in favor of adopting a new approach to teaching English in the European context regarding American and British English as the most prominent varieties of this language. American English has already become dominant in international communication and has made a significant impact both on British English and on non-native English used in Europe as a lingua franca. Many learners of English are exposed to two varieties – to British English in educational settings, primarily through language learning materials, and to American English in many other situations, such as international communication, business, through media and social networks etc. Consequently, many non-native speakers use an amalgam of these two varieties, which is uncommon among native speakers. Linguists have noted the emergence of Euro-English, a relatively heterogeneous variety typical of European speakers, which is based on both British and American English, but contains features of various European languages. In order to make a more unified standard in teaching English as a foreign language, the author proposes switching to American English as the more dominant variety, but without neglecting British English.
