  • Transnational Families as a Global Politic Agenda

    •
  • Parents in Transnational Contexts: Care from the Gender and Family

Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to generate some reflections about the care as a family practice that traditionally has been assigned to women -mothers, grandmothers, aunts, wives-, where gender structures and relationship have been influenced significantly by generating binarisms that put women/mother in the reproductive/private field and man/father in the production/public sphere, causing inequalities that permeate family and social life as well as local and transnational space. Questions about gender relations built into transnational families raises here showing the changes and continuities that occur from the migration of the mother or father, in which gender inequalities are reproduced or transformed.

  • Transnational Care and Entangled Inequalities in the Peruvian Migration
Experience: A Perspective Based on the Households of Departure

Abstract: This article analyzes the care practices in the Peruvian migration experience, focusing on the perspectives of transnational family members who are left in Peru. The first part describes the theoretical perspective, methodology and context of Peruvian emigration and the households studied. A second part analyzes the care arrangements in these households from a perspective focused on entangled inequalities. It shows that transnational care-giving is shaped by a deepening of intrafamilial inequalities, based on power axes such as gender, citizenship, social class, and place of residence. These asymmetries also affect the experiences of children and aging parents who are left behind, which are examined in the third and fourth parts of this article.

  • Transnational Family Practices in Indigenous Families from Oaxaca with
Adult Migrant Children in the United States

Abstract: From a qualitative research, this paper examines the transnational practices that allow the maintenance of parent-child ties in families with adult migrant children from an indigenous community from Oaxaca, Mexico. The findings show that there are common practices shared by all families, as well as an interesting diversity of other practices strongly determined by factors such as the familiar life cycle, and particularly, the legal migratory situation of their members. This brings on important differences among the families in key aspects like the face-to-face contact and care-giving to aged parents.

  • A Proposal about Inequality Regarding Transnational Family: Micro and
           Macro Struggles

Abstract: The paper focuses on the analytical and empirical links between the phenomenon of transnational family and the concept of inequalities. First, we discuss the definition of social inequalities and its variety of empirical scenarios. Subsequently, we describe an overview of the current studies on transnational family, making emphasis on the type of studies rather than summarizing them. at the end of this part, we propose the idea of transnational family as a place of "entangled inequalities". The third part shows that the inequalities within transnational family are a challenge which should be faced through the identification of spatial scales. We suggest not just an empirical connection between inequalities at macro and micro level, but also a way to connecting them.

  • Social Environmental Conflicts, Emotion and empowerment: The Resistance
against the San Nicolás' Dam in Mexico

Abstract: The present intercultural education is trying to leave behind the theorist and the context in which was born.
