Abstract: This special issue of The Journal of Burma Studies is part of a collective and multidisciplinary project which explores astrological and divinatory knowledge and practices in Burma. These practices include fortune telling, divinatory, and therapeutic techniques, and they serve a broader system for the interpretation of past, present, and future events. In Burma, as elsewhere in South and Southeast Asia, astrology, and divination rationales are part of social thinking and are also embedded in religious fields (Vernant 1974:10; Guenzi 2021:9). Abstract: This research draws on work on the circulation of knowledge and history of sciences in early- and late-modern South Asia (Raj 2007; Pollock 2011), including Indian astral sciences or jyotiḥśāstra (Pingree 1981; Minkowski 2002; Guenzi 2021). Part of the Burmese medical and astrological knowledge which is considered to have been "localized" from India also had a strong connection with Persia. Abstract: I first visited Mayantelin camp, north of Hmawbi, on 16 January 2005. A friend had told me that Min Theinhka, the famous astrologer (baydin hsaya) who recently established this camp, was offering free food to any visitor, every Sunday. The area was increasingly popular amongst "religious" or "spiritual" specialists, who settled in this jungle due to the low land price and the accessibility of the spot. Abstract: Describing the disorientation felt by Afanasii Nikitin, a Russian merchant who traveled alone to India in the second half of the fifteenth century, his journal translator Charles Malamoud remarks that the gritty trader felt lost and anguished not so much because he did not know where he was, but because he did not know when he was. Deprived of his own books and calendars, unable to recognize the days, the months, and the seasons, Nikitin could not properly observe Christian holy days and fasts and was afraid of losing his faith.
