Abstract: In July 2020 the authors in this special issue assembled at a digital conference amidst a global pandemic—an experience that seemed in many ways to defy time. Instead of gathering in Lisbon at the European Association of Social Anthropologists meetings, we sat in front of computer screens, in homes and offices spread from Arizona to Germany. For some, the panel was mid-afternoon, following a full day of conferencing and work. For those farthest west it was early morning, a first coffee in hand. Abstract: As the room fills with people and things, so too does it fill with noise; bursts of laughter and conversation undulate in an upward spiral, causing a tension to build. A tension that anticipates meeting, connecting, and parting again. Background music plays on a lower register to signal that the show is coming but not yet here. The seats are filling with people, bags, and articles of excess clothing. Tables soon become littered with books and cell phones and glasses of beer. Excitement pulses through the room as people move around and chat. Then the background music cuts out and the MC takes the stage. Abstract: My interest in walking as a principle of learning started when looking for international collaboration on issues of postcolonial memorial politics between Germany and Namibia. From my hometown in Germany, I was already familiar with postcolonial walking tours offered by a group of activists1 who designed local tours in order to raise consciousness on colonial histories "made in Bremen" and the insufficient public efforts by the current municipality to establish adequate tools for critical remembrance. Abstract: This article is based on collaborations that took place as part of a multi-sited ethnography exploring "empowerment" in a UK-based community development initiative called Big Local. Collaboration can mean many things in ethnography. In this case I approached four groups that had formed as part of Big Local and explained that I was conducting research into how groups involved with Big Local organized collectively. I also said I was keen to collaborate with the groups on their work and suggested that their community research might be a good starting point. I had no prior connection to the groups I contacted. Since my early adolescence, 'what next' has been the motto of my academic and professional pursuit. . . . Abstract: In the summer of 2020, a few weeks after the first COVID-19 lockdown, I received a call from Simon Beyrand, an environmental journalist, colleague, and friend: "I've been thinking about all these lockdown reports of people being able to hear birds singing instead of traffic noise. What if we did our sound project about aural environments during that exceptional period'" I was surprised by his call. Abstract: This collaboration—like many ethnographic beginnings—started with an impromptu conversation and followed an improvisational path. Two of the authors, both professors at the same institution, met at a campus event aimed at fostering diversity. Sheehan, an anthropologist, asked Heying, a nutritionist, about their recent survey on campus food insecurity. In the discussion Sheehan inquired whether qualitative data might be a useful addition to survey data. Framing the nascent collaboration was a mutual desire to provide undergraduate students with research opportunities.
