  • An Introduction to the Special Issue

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: In July 2020 the authors in this special issue assembled at a digital conference amidst a global pandemic—an experience that seemed in many ways to defy time. Instead of gathering in Lisbon at the European Association of Social Anthropologists meetings, we sat in front of computer screens, in homes and offices spread from Arizona to Germany. For some, the panel was mid-afternoon, following a full day of conferencing and work. For those farthest west it was early morning, a first coffee in hand. The COVID-19 pandemic had already drastically reshaped our daily lives, producing a sensation of temporal displacement and global pause as we shifted patterns of behavior to stay at home and physically apart. Despite what ... Read More

  • Ludic Heritage: Supplementary School Plays, Museum Collaborations, and the
           Futurity of Histories in Migration

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: In a museum festival celebrating Mother-tongue Day 2019, children from an Albanian supplementary school in East London were introduced on stage as: "Heritage champions . . . the champions of the future, they are passing the knowledge!" Their teacher added: "The day coincides with a day that is very dear to us, it is the 17th of February, a day of Independence of the State of Kosovo."Gathered round a wooden rocking-cradle brought from Albania, young children copied their teacher's moves, rocking imaginary babies in their folded arms, singing lullabies (kenget e djepit) such as this:Nani naninoNani kush te tundbukuroshe e nanesnanes ne katund1Albanian Lullaby. Pencil drawing by Orly Orbach.Powerfully ... Read More

  • A Story of Us: Community as Method in Live Storytelling Events

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: As the room fills with people and things, so too does it fill with noise; bursts of laughter and conversation undulate in an upward spiral, causing a tension to build. A tension that anticipates meeting, connecting, and parting again. Background music plays on a lower register to signal that the show is coming but not yet here. The seats are filling with people, bags, and articles of excess clothing. Tables soon become littered with books and cell phones and glasses of beer. Excitement pulses through the room as people move around and chat. Then the background music cuts out and the MC takes the stage. A slow realization washes over the room and everything and everyone gradually settles, becoming quiet and still. ... Read More

  • Dealing with Postcolonial Pasts to Envision a Respectful Future: On the
           Format of Collaborative Walk-Shops

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: My interest in walking as a principle of learning started when looking for international collaboration on issues of postcolonial memorial politics between Germany and Namibia. From my hometown in Germany, I was already familiar with postcolonial walking tours offered by a group of activists1 who designed local tours in order to raise consciousness on colonial histories "made in Bremen" and the insufficient public efforts by the current municipality to establish adequate tools for critical remembrance. When I joined a tour, I realized that there was as yet little reflection about the methodology: strolling through urban landscapes, being instructed or informed by special guides on local colonial legacies, and ... • Creating a Shared "Activity Timespace" in Ethnographic Collaboration:
Aligning Knowledge, Synchronizing Rhythms, Re/Constructing Roles

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: This article is based on collaborations that took place as part of a multi-sited ethnography exploring "empowerment" in a UK-based community development initiative called Big Local. Collaboration can mean many things in ethnography. In this case I approached four groups that had formed as part of Big Local and explained that I was conducting research into how groups involved with Big Local organized collectively. I also said I was keen to collaborate with the groups on their work and suggested that their community research might be a good starting point. I had no prior connection to the groups I contacted. As Holmes and Marcus (2008) observed, research of different forms is already integral to many sites of ... Read More

  • Peer Teaching on Repeat: Reflecting on Time in Shared Pedagogical Praxis

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: As a twenty-something pursuing my professional career, I am met with constant stimulation: the next task, the next deadline, the next promotion. Since my early adolescence, 'what next' has been the motto of my academic and professional pursuit. . . . Everything was completed for a purpose: clubs were for college applications and resumes, dual credit to bolster our decided career path at seventeen, internships for the purpose of getting a job, research for the sake of graduate admissions. It was few and far between that an academic experience was purely for the sake of learning without an ulterior purpose or 'next step.'This article is a collaborative reflection upon an academic space that provides one alternative ... • Listening to the Urban Fracture: Co-Creating Soundscapes, Partnerships and
Futures in the French Periphery during the COVID-19 Pandemic

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: In the summer of 2020, a few weeks after the first COVID-19 lockdown, I received a call from Simon Beyrand, an environmental journalist, colleague, and friend: "I've been thinking about all these lockdown reports of people being able to hear birds singing instead of traffic noise. What if we did our sound project about aural environments during that exceptional period'" I was surprised by his call. At this point in the pandemic, I was convinced that this project, like most others, was dead. We began brainstorming, taking it one day at a time, and being aware that we might not be able to carry the project to conclusion. This collaboration materialized in three soundscapes in which participants draw on lockdown aural ... Read More

  • Fitting It In: Temporalities of Collaborative Research on Campus Food
           Insecurity

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: This collaboration—like many ethnographic beginnings—started with an impromptu conversation and followed an improvisational path. Two of the authors, both professors at the same institution, met at a campus event aimed at fostering diversity. Sheehan, an anthropologist, asked Heying, a nutritionist, about their recent survey on campus food insecurity. In the discussion Sheehan inquired whether qualitative data might be a useful addition to survey data. Framing the nascent collaboration was a mutual desire to provide undergraduate students with research opportunities. This article details our resulting research on food insecurity at a liberal arts college in a rural midwestern area of the United States.Time and ... Read More
