  • Qué ves cuando las ves. Las mafias italianas en los paisajes
lingüísticos de la Ciudad de Buenos Aires

    • Authors: María Soledad Balsas, Francesca Capelli
      Pages: 15 - 33
Abstract: In this article we question the visual references to the Italian mafias in the linguistic landscapes in the City of Buenos Aires, through a discursive and ethnographic approach. By analyzing the thematic, rhetorical and enunciative features deployed by the textual surfaces that circulate in public and/or virtual spaces, as well as some significant absences, we aim at problematizing the visual common sense that shapes our individual and collective perceptions on mafia. Due to the proliferation of those visualities and their tendency to spectacularization of the phenomenon of mafias, they would result in a «gaslighting» which tends to naturalize a poorly informed (if not openly biased) interpretation, which paradoxically hides more than what it shows.

  • 50 años de La maffia (1972), de Leopoldo Torre Nilsson: representaciones
de la mafia ítalo-rosarina. Interacciones entre narrativas
           periodísticas, literarias y cinematográficas

    • Authors: Román Pablo Setton
      Pages: 35 - 46
Abstract: The following article analyzes the film La maffia (1972), by Leopoldo Torre Nilsson. I try to show how the film configures a representation of the Sicilian mafia of the 1930s less from the historical facts than from the speech of the journalistic chronicle of the time, of the Hollywood and Argentine cinematographic tradition and also from the literary tradition and the political imaginary linked to Peronism. In turn, the film itself – enormously successful with critics and audiences alike – goes on to feed the Argentine imaginary of that mafia, which continues to operate largely as an important influence on the political imaginary.

  • Me río de la mafia. Los Cubrepileta y la sátira mafiosa en la
           Argentina

    • Authors: Bettina Alejandra Favero
      Pages: 47 - 58
Abstract: In this essay, the mafia appears as a cultural object when analyzed from a humorous program broadcast in the 1990s in Argentina. It is Los Cubrepileta, a sketch that was part of Cha Cha Cha starring Alfredo Casero, Fabio Alberti, Diego Capusotto, Vivian El Jaber, Jorge Takashima, Alejandra Flechner, among others. Cha Cha Cha was a crazy, surreal and absurd program broadcast during 1993 and from 1995 to 1997 on América TV. Although the space was never massive, it is interesting to observe and analyze the way in which the sketch dedicated to an Italian family (Los Cubrepileta) parody the mafia with gags, jokes and set phrases inspired by movies and novels as well as the stereotype from the Italian mobster. To this is added another interesting fact, the reproduction of the sketches on YouTube, the visualizations and the comments on them.

  • ¿Adónde se habrá metido Mafiopoli' Las mafias italianas según La
           Gente d’Italia

    • Authors: Gabriele Paolo Smeriglio
      Pages: 59 - 69
Abstract: Generalisations can never tend to be exhaustive, nor can they claim to represent all subjectivities and the diverse and consequent political-ideological narratives that are part of them. But they also describe social and behavioural propensities present in the cultural folds of a specific social group. The role of newspapers, sounding boards for certain ethnic, political, economic and social sentiments, is fundamental to study the rapid consumption of these communicative processes whose contents end up being internalised even before they are processed. Beyond the level of scientific substance of which they are composed. In relation to the treatment of Italian mafias in the press, this manuscript aims to analyse, based on a selection of articles published between 2018 and 2022, the narratives produced by “La Gente d’Italia”, an Italian-language ethnic newspaper based in Uruguay, on the combination between persistence and change, between maintaining consolidated structures and adapting to the changes in the economic and social context in which the mafia is present today.

  • Al Capone e i gangster visti dalla Francia: una mafia di cui si mantenne
           nell’ombra il nome

    • Authors: Nicolas Volle
      Pages: 71 - 84
Abstract: The appearance in the French press of Al Capone’s banditry compensates the supposed victory of fascism against the Mafia. In the space of a few years, it reveals a new criminality whose operating modes equal those of the Mafia. But this press, dazzled by the violence and novelty of this banditry fails to grasp its similarities to the Mafia. Exposing the ways in which French journalists reveals this criminality, the article questions the reasons why they do not see its proximity to the Mafia.

  • L’evoluzione della percezione della mafia italiana e l’impatto di
           Saviano sulla stampa francese

    • Authors: Anne-Sophie Canto
      Pages: 85 - 96
Abstract: The aim of this article is to show how the perception of the Italian mafia phenomenon, which was initially a paradox, has evolved over the last few years in France. Indeed, for a long time it seems to have been the object of a surprising paradox: while it was factually present on French territory, the press seemed to focus mainly on its role in Italy. However, in recent years, two events have gradually overturned this view: the attacks on the newspaper Charlie Hebdo in January 2015, and then the presence of Saviano who, as a literary and media figure, has liberated the word around the organisation and expansion of Italian organised crime.

  • La Mafia e l’agire sociale delle donne

    • Authors: Milena Gammaitoni
      Pages: 97 - 108
Abstract: The article presents a historical-social excursus on the criminality of women and on the stereotypes and prejudices that have long obscured a real understanding of the phenomenon: in the history of ideas, in medicine, in jurisprudence, in the media and in the various social representations. Analyzing their different roles, from the socialization of children to the mafia mentality, but also the central role of some women in the rebellion against the mafia, is a necessary path for a deeper reflection of the phenomenon.
